Our leading lady and leading man get a sliver of happiness. Will it be fleeting?
The players: Kim Tae Hyun (Joo Won), a gifted surgeon, incurred debt to pay for dialysis for his sister. He assumed the Yong Pal identity to be a doctor to gangsters. It fell apart when the police found Yong Pal’s scalpel and tracked it to the hospital. The police talked to Chief Surgeon Lee (Jung Woong In), who hates Tae Hyun. Instead of turning Tae Hyun over to the police, Chief Surgeon Lee presses Tae Hyun to tend to VIP only patients. Desperate to keep his job so he can continue to dialysis for his sister (and pay his debts), Tae Hyun agrees. Our leading lady is VIP patient Yeo Jin (Kim Tae Hee). Yeo Jin was tended to by Chief Surgeon Lee who is in cahoots with her brother, Han Do Joon (Jo Hyun Jae). Do Joon’s wife Chae Young (Chae Jung An) is working against her husband.
Yong Pal Episode 9
It’s the dawn of a new day and Yeo Jin hopes she doesn’t lose Tae Hyun. His physical therapy involves eating an omelet and walking slowly with Yeo Jin. When the priest asks Yeo Jin when he last confession was, 3 years is a long time. In the confessional she admits she wanted her enemies dead. The priest notes her prayer of hatred was answered with love. He asks if she loves Tae Hyun. Yeo Jin admits she believes she does love Tae Hyun. But that leads to fear that she will lose him because she loves him. The priest advises that she love her enemies. She cries and pauses before saying she will.
That surprised me. Her enemies kept her drugged and locked up for 3 years. Her enemies actively decided to kill her to gain power. Why would she want to love her enemies? I was also a bit surprised that she admitted loving Tae Hyun. Seems a bit early in their relationship. I like that she is slowly getting her body back. They didn’t have her running after being in a bed for 3 years.
Chief Lee is surprised to learn Nurse Hwang was killed after a truck rammed the phone booth she was in. Yeo Jin’s brother’s wife is also surprised to learn of Nurse Hwang’s death. Chief Lee visits the Director concerned that all that cared for Yeo Jin may be killed as Nurse Hwang was. The Director says that they are crucial to the hospital and doesn’t think they are in danger. He scoff the Nurse Hwang was trouble it is better for all that she is dead.
Tae Hyun washes Yeo Jin’s feet after a day of therapy. She thanks him. He says they can’t stay there forever and must move on. She asks where they will go. Tae Hyun doesn’t know but feels as long as he is with her, all is well. Yeo Jin admits she feels the same. They look for apartments on line.
I’d be happy with a guy that would wash my feet!
Chae Young interrupts a strategy meeting between President Go, Yeo Jin’s brother Do Joon, and his assistant. They leave Chae Young and Do Joon alone. She asks if Tae Hyun is next on the hit list. Do Joon asks if she loves Tae Hyun. CY confirms this. She says per their agreement. Her toys cannot be played with until she’s done with them. She goes for the jugular saying in the past when he said he wanted to marry someone he did not care about he was naïve. Now Do Joon is a killer. Do Joon doesn’t like that and threatens her life. She scoffs and tells him not to touch Tae Hyun. Chae Young reminds him if she dies then Sung Hoo’s family will learn that he was killed by him. As Chae Young walks the hall she calls her father and asks him to find Tae Hyun. President Go smiles, Chae Young will find Tae Hyun for them.
Yeo Jin flashes back to her brother getting yelled at when she got hit by a tennis ball when they played doubles. They both sobbed together.
Chief Lee is disturbed when Yeo Jin’s brother brings a nurse from outside the hospital.
They walk in the woods together. When she tires, Tae Hyun gives her a piggy back.
Tae Hyun flashes back to playing doctor when his sister was ill. He had her take adult medicine that damaged her liver.
Yeo Jin asks if the guilt drove him to be a doctor to save other. No, Tae Hyun responds. He wanted to rise above the poverty that stymied his sister’s care and turned his father into a drunk. But now he’s debt laden and a wanted criminal. He strives for power but ends up pathetically weak. Yeo Jin tells him everyone is weak to those they love.
They arrive at the hill. Tae Hyun tells Yeo Jin it is good luck to kiss her. Without further ado, she kisses him. He tells her if they kiss here, they will never part. She smiles and says they need to come back tomorrow. He smiles. They kiss again.
What a pretty scenic kiss. Tae Hyun wins the longest piggy back in kdrama history with that hike through the woods and up the hill.
A child comes to the church begging Tae Hyun to come and save his mother. Tae Hyun leaves Yeo Jin in the car alone. Tae Hyun learns the sick woman is an illegal resident and refuses to go the hospital to deliver the baby. Tae Hyun tells Yeo Jin he must perform a C section. He goes Yong Pal and kicks everyone out. He delivers the baby but the mother takes a turn for the worse. He decides to take her to the hospital and get help from his favorite nurses. When he tells Yeo Jin to stay behind, she is afraid and unhappy with his choice. He promises to return. She stares at the car as he drives away. He stares at Yeo Jin as he drives away.
Flash of happiness before more misery? Yes, I enjoyed the cute moments between our couple. The chemistry is good between the actors. They make it work. But the foreshadowing is that this may be the only sliver of happiness our couple gets. Was that the longest piggy back ride in kdrama history?
Call me crazy but I felt a bit sorry for Chief Lee as his nightmare of those involved in Yeo Jin’s forced coma were being picked up and killed.
Our couple shared moments of pain from their childhood. Tae Hyun’s manifested itself in the form of the illegal resident that needed an emergency C section. I don’t really like the Yong Pal side of the story. Too bad because it is part of the signature story for the series. The struggle for Yeo Jin and power grabs me. Our couple interests me. I dig the helpful nurses. But Yong Pal…yawn.
The third song of the OST is released. Pretty ballad “Actually” by Jung In. Check it out via the link or the embedded video below:
