Yong Pal and our VIP leading lady Yeo Jin come to a mutual understanding.
The players: Kim Tae Hyun (Joo Won), a gifted surgeon, incurred debt to pay for dialysis for his sister, Kim So Hyun (Park Hye Soo). He assumed the Yong Pal identity to be a doctor to gangsters. It fell apart when the police found Yong Pal’s scalpel and tracked it to the hospital. The police talked to Chief Surgeon Lee (Jung Woong In), who hates Tae Hyun. Instead of turning Tae Hyun over to the police, Chief Surgeon Lee presses Tae Hyun to tend to VIP only patients. Desperate to keep his job so he can continue to dialysis for his sister (and pay his debts), Tae Hyun agrees.
Our leading lady is sedated VIP patient Yeo Jin (Kim Tae Hee). Yeo Jin is there due to a car accident that killed her boyfriend. Yeo Jin is personally tended to by Chief Surgeon Lee who is in cahoots with her brother, Han Do Joon (Jo Hyun Jae) to keep her secluded and sedated. Do Joon’s wife Chae Young (Chae Jung An) is working against her husband and wants access to Yeo Jin.
Yong Pal Episode 5 Recap
The debt collector calls and Tae Hyun the amount he owes. The interest must be insane because Tae Hyun does not react well to the news. Yeo Jin thinks she has another prison guard but this one can be bought. Yeo Jin opens her eyes. Tae Hyun has his back to her and does not realize this. He mutters “it one thing after another”. Yeo Jin asks “shall I lend you the money?” Tae Hyun’s eyes widen with shock.
Tae Hyun’s sister is rejecting the drugs and the doctor tells him 1-2 months to live. If father hadn’t brought her to the hospital it would worse. When Tae Hyun returns to the room he asks his father, who he calls guardian, to leave. His sister asks him to make peace with father. She tells him her time is short.
He passes his father in the hallway. His father tells him to let it go. He declares he’ll never accept his sister’s death.
Yeo Jin’s brother Do Joon receives a request for visitation via court order from his business opponents. He is not happy. He orders Yeo Jin killed. His assistant tells him it isn’t necessary and will void 3 years’ worth of plans. Do Joon smashes a glass on his assistant’s’ head and tells him he has 48 hours to work it out.
Tae Hyun considers Yeo Jin’s offer. Wake her up in secret for cash.
Tae Hyun decides to reduce the drugs into Yeo Jin. She starts to twitch. Nurse Hwang gets a motion detection alert. Yeo Jin wakes. When Nurse Hwang enters Yeo Jin is asleep and Tae Hyun is asleep on the couch. They have a power play and Tae Hyun wins this round. Nurse Hwang leaves.
Yeo Jin asks what he wants. He wants money for his sister. She asks for his cellphone. He has to show her how to work it. She calls the Swiss bank. The banker asks for the verbal password. She supplies it. It matches. She tells Tae Hyun to check his email. It’s the deposit. It needs a password she’ll supply the day he gets her out of the hospital.
Meanwhile creepy Nurse Hwang slaps Yeo Jin for flirting with Tae Hyun. Yeo Jin does not flinch from the blow. Then Nurse Hwang lovingly brushes her hair.
Yeo Jin’s brother’s wife, Chae Young, tells the rival company President Go NOT to put Yeo Jin at risk. It is a case of mutual distrust. She tells her father they should strike first, President Go cannot be trusted. She suggests they acquire Yeo Jin. President Go tells a hitman to eliminate Chae Young.
Yeo Jin does a superb job of messing with Nurse Hwang but repeatedly setting off her motion detector. Eventually Nurse Hwang freaks out in front of Tae Hyun. Chief Lee tells her she’s overworked and takes her off night duty.
Tae Hyun congratulates Yeo Jin for driving Nurse Hwang crazy. Yeo Jin states Nurse Hwang is already crazy. She tells Tae Hyun if he knew what Nurse Hwang had done to her, he’d faint. Tae Hyun isn’t impressed. Yeo Jin says no one talks to her that way. He tells her to get used to it. She tells him he has no manner. He tells her he has no hypocrisy. She reminds him she’s the only one that can save his sister. He reminds her he’s the only one that can get her to the outside world.
Yeo Jin gives Tae Hyun background those that would want to oust her brother from power using her. They include Chae Young, her father and President Go. Yeo Jin says President Go is strong.
Tae Hyun asks if there is anyone he should contact for her. Yeo Jin is blunt. There is no one, everyone she loved is dead because they loved her.
Tae Hyun asks what Yeo Jin will do when she leaves. Yeo Jin is blunt. She’ll destroy this prison and all those that held her in it for 3 years.
Tae Hyun asks if he can get her a particular food. Her mother’s soy bean stew. He chuckles. She obvious she misses her mother. She notes he is obvious too that he misses his mother.
Tae Hyun asks if she has friends. She has business acquaintances. He says he doesn’t have friends either. He charmingly tries to persuade her to be friends. She has to laugh when he says he’s partial to those with power and money.
* This show works when it focuses on Yeo Jin. Tae Hyun’s family situation with his sister, his father, don’t interest me. I recognize Tae Hyun’s sister is a big driver for his actions but at this point, she is a relationship that has minimal emotional punch for the viewer as we’ve primarily seen her in a hospital bed. Yeo Jin interests me. The gangsters don’t interest me either.
* Tae Hyun and Yeo Jin verbal exchanges are equal in power as they both have something they need from each other. He made good points and she made good points in the discussion. They both want something from each other. They are both friendless. They need each other. There isn’t any hint of romance. Yeo Jin did have a reaction to Tae Hyun invading her personal space to look at the cell phone. But she also had a reaction when he spoke bluntly to her.
* Nurse Hwang is creepy in a compelling way. The actresss, Bae Hye Sun, is doing a fine job looking maniacal when Yeo Jin was pushing her buttons with the motion sensor. When she was in front of the hospital and unable to force herself to leave her client, that was creepy obsessive too.
* The second song of the OST has been released, “A Nightmare” by Yong Joon Hyung of BEAST and Heo Ga Yoon of 4Minute. The song is a mix of rap and ballad. Check it out via the link or the embedded video below:
