Wok of Love Episode 23
The old woman (Lee Mi Sook) enters the office. Doo Chil Seong (Jang Hyuk) tells her to sit. He gives her the wallet. He holds the picture then gives it to her. He calls her mother. He asks if she’s his mother. He asks why she abandoned him. The old woman denies being his mother. Chil Seong admits he’s never had a mother. She cries. Chil Seong offers tissues and asks why she’s crying. The old woman declares the tears are because she did everything wrong. She’s sorry he found out. Chil Seong puts on his sunglasses and asks her not to come again. He’s uncomfortable having a mother and says it is best if they not meet again. He walks out of the office. She continues to cry. Chil Seong reenters the office and states the police told him he was abandoned in a Chinese eatery. He tells her that he couldn’t enter the army because he was an orphan, nor could he go to college because he was a gangster. Chil Seong says this eatery is his, his men are his family, he declares he has a good life. He sits opposite his mother and states he doesn’t harbor bad feelings nor does he want anything from her. He does ask why she abandoned him in a Chinese eatery. She claims Chinese food is her favorite. He can’t believe she abandoned him at her favorite eatery. She cries that the owner seemed nice and he wouldn’t starve. Anger flares as Chil Seong snaps that should have paid the bill. He spits out that she couldn’t spare $2 when she dumped him. Chil Seong stands in frustration. He sits and tells her to eat her favorite foods and puts $1000 to cover the bill. He leaves. She continues to cry.
Chil Seong carried that scene as his emotions built remembering the shame of being abandoned. Can his mother explain why she did it so that Chil Seong (and we the viewers) can forgive her?
Chil Seong steps outside where he hears and sees the celebration inside the eatery. He continues down the street.
Having just learned they booked a 100-person reservation everyone erupts with happiness. Hugs all around. Seo Poong (Lee Joon Ho) and Sae Woo (Jung Ryeo Won) hug. They smile. Everyone watches them. Sae Woo says this is a nice dream. Seo Poong and Sae Woo notice everyone watching and the moment is broken. To dispel the notion that his hug with Sae Woo was personal, Seo Poong hugs everyone no matter how awkward.
Chief Wang is dismayed to learn the reservation for 100 people is being cancelled. He tells the nurse he’s got an offer she can’t refuse. He matches Seo Poong’s pricing declaring his $70 dinner will be specially priced at $18. He points out his eatery has better ambiance and service.
Chil Seong stares at the river while the emotions and tears flow.
Sae Woo finds Seo Poong working on a dish. She suggests jajangmyeon and sweet & sour pork (the two dishes Chil Seong said he can’t eat together because of his mother’s abandonment). Seo Poong cooks up a yummy dish. Sae Woo loves it. Seo Poong tells her to leave when she’s done. Sae Woo isn’t happy to learn that Seo Poong is thinking about moving in with Chil Seong. She doesn’t like losing to Chil Seong in a head-to-head comparison. The phone rings. The nurse calls and tells Seo Poong about Chef Wang’s offer. She apologizes and cancels the reservation. Seo Poong offers her a new menu and a private tasting. The nurse calls and tells Chef Wang about Seo Poong’s offer. Chef Wang declares he’ll create a new menu too. She asks for jajangmyeon and sweet & sour pork. Chef Wang hesitates. The nurse notes that Seo Poong is making it. Chef Wang agrees much to the surprise of his staff.
Seo Poong walks through the hotel’s lobby, the nurse’s words that Chef Wang agreed to make jajangmyeon and sweet & sour pork, ringing in his head.
Chef Wang lies he didn’t make street food like jajangmyeon and sweet & sour pork to provide street vendors a niche. Chef Wang declares they’ll make the best jajangmyeon. Seo Poong bursts through the kitchen door. He declares that Chef Wang must feel threatened to go head-to-head with him. Chef Wang and Seo Poong agree to battle it out.
Maeng Dal calls Chil Seong who picks him up. Maeng Dal tells him that hotel’s funds are frozen forcing them to cancel banquets and leaving contractors unpaid. Chil Seong realizes that CEO Yong went to gangster for cash to keep himself afloat. Maeng Dal suggests CEO Yong has a new target of opportunity. Chil Seong declares the target is his eatery and building.
Back in his office, Chil Seong tells his men that CEO Yong is making things difficult so he’ll default on the loan and lose the building and eatery. Chil Seong declares he’ll take over the hotel’s building instead.
The nurse stands as judge. Seo Poong and Chef Wang first make sweet and sour pork. Seo Poong and Chef Wang try and one up each other as they explain their methodology. They both present their dishes to the nurse. She tastes Chef Wang’s and praises his dish. She tastes Seo Poong’s and praises his dish. They ask which her favorite is.
Sae Woo calls Seo Poong. He doesn’t answer.
Seo Poong and Chef Wang first make jajangmyeon. Seo Poong and Chef Wang try and one up each other as they explain their methodology. They both present their dishes to the nurse. CEO Yong Seung Ryong (Kim Sa Kwon) arrives and stares daggers at Seo Poong. The nurse tastes Chef Wang’s and praises his dish. She tastes Seo Poong’s and praises his dish. They ask which her favorite is. The nurse says it was a tie for the sweet and sour pork but Seo Poong’s jajangmyeon is the winning dish. She grants Seo Poong her business. She leaves. CEO Yong tells Chef Wang they need to talk. Chef Wang tells Seo Poong he can’t accept this. Seo Poong points out the customer made the choice with her own taste buds. Seo Poong declares this is the first of many times that he’ll beat Chef Wang. He strides out of the kitchen. After both chefs have left the kitchen, even Chef Wang’s staff agrees Seo Poong’s is better.
Wok of Love Episode 24
Sae Woo storks the kitten outside the eatery. Chil Seong offers to take care of the kitten. He claims he’ll be the kitten’s mother and Sae Woo will be the father. Sae Woo suggest a name, Dim Sum. Chil Seong agrees. Sae Woo charges Chil Seong to be a good mother. Sae Woo tells Chil Seong not to be too nice to Seo Poong. She notes he’s at the hotel right now. Sae Woo asks what good thing happened to him. Chil Seong denies anything good happened. He admits to be sad and lonely sometimes. Sae Woo offers the kitten to comfort him. She tells him mothers receive from their children as well as give.
Seo Poong exits the hotel charged and stoked by his victory over Chef Wang. He spies Sae Woo in the eatery. He notices the kitten outside the eatery. He’s so stoked he knows he better avoid Sae Woo or he’ll cross the line. He looks for Chil Seong. Instead he finds the men working. They ignore him. Maeng Dal is determined to find out the money mess the hotel is in. Seo Poong asks again if they’ll bond with him. Maeng Dal declares they are busy. Seo Poong returns to stare at Seo Poong. He decides to risk it and enters the eatery.
Sae Woo asks how it went. Seo Poong says it went well. He invites her to share a drink. He offers to take her home. She’s surprised and agrees. In the car, Seo Poong helps her put on her seatbelt. They both notice the closeness of that action. Seo Poong tells Sae Woo to get out. He gets out. She gets out. He asks her to a movie. He retracts the offer. She gets irked and asks what he’s doing. She asks if the tenderness in the ER was a dream. She walks to the bus stop. Seo Poong follows and apologizes about his flip-flop behavior. She gets on the bus fed up with his contradictory actions. Seo Poong isn’t happy with himself. He’s started when Sae Woo returns. She orders him to stop lying, yelling at her and become consistent. She’s asks why he kept his fortune from her. Frustrated that she’s revealed more than she wishes, she waits for the bus to come and stop her from talking.
At home, Sae Woo gives herself a pep talk and reads a book about love. The book notes that sometimes lags between people.
CEO Yong tells Chef Wang to consider the 100-person reservation his. CEO Yong declares he’ll call the hospital’s director and arrange it. CEO Yong wants the nurse to cancel the reservation with Seo Poong on the day, so he’s purchased the ingredients and it crushed.
Chil Seong finds his mother tucking a note in his door. He reads it. “I’m going to leave and show myself to you can. Take care”. Chil Seong asks if she means the words. He drags her down the hall.
Seo Poong tells the team they’ll be cooking jajangmyeon and sweet & sour pork. Chil Seong enters the eatery and announces the old woman is his mother. She claims it isn’t true. She starts to cry. Chil Seong says she’s his mother. Chil Seong declares this is good and they should concentrate on making more positive moments. He leaves. Sae Woo follows. Chil Seong’s mother tells everyone not to stare at him. Chil Seong tells Sae Woo to feed their kitten.
Seo Poong offers to cook breakfast for Chil Seong’s mother. He suggests jajangmyeon and sweet & sour pork. She agrees. Chil Seong’s mother eats the jajangmyeon and sweet & sour pork.
Seo Poong, Chae Seol Ja (Park Ji Young), and Maeng Dal review the larder contents and prepare a list to purchase.
Bo Ra calls Seo Poong for a drink. She apologizes for her traitorous behavior. She asks if she can work with him. She asks him to forgive her. She shares that Chef Wang’s team were envious of his talents. They drink together. Seo Poong tells Bo Ra it’s better for her career to train at the hotel. He admits he’s finally happy. They smile and drink.
Seo Poong calls Maeng Dal to have someone pick him up. He specifies he does not want Sae Woo to come.
Sae Woo arrives to pick Seo Poong up. Bo Ra tries to leave but Seo Poong stops her. Sae Woo doesn’t like that. Bo Ra leaves. Seo Poong agrees to go to the market with Sae Woo.
They end up at an overlook. Sae Woo admits she forgot the shopping list. Seo Poong claims he has it locked in his head. They bicker. Seo Poong lists all the things Sae Woo told him she doesn’t like. They stare at each other. Seo Poong says he’s everything she doesn’t like. Sae Woo asked why he wanted her to come. Seo Poong says he misses her. He admits that the emergency room was real. Sae Woo asks why he’s been keeping his distance. He kisses her. Seo Poong admits he likes Sae Woo more than he likes Chil Seong. He says he’s a bad friend. He tells her not to hate him. He kisses her with feeling. Sae Woo responds.
My Thoughts
Beating Chef Wang and a little alcohol gave Seo Poong the courage to admit his feelings. I enjoyed the cook-off between Chef Wang and Seo Poong. It was good to see Seo Poong beat Chef Wang fair and square. Of course, CEO Yong doesn’t play fair and square and told Chef Wang he’d get the prize reservation cancelled for Seo Poong and awarded to them. Meanwhile, Seo Poong fought his feelings for Sae Woo trying to coax Seo Poong’s men to hang with him, but they declined. Seo Poong agreed to meet the apologetic Bo Ra instead. When Maeng Dal mistakenly sent Sae Woo to Seo Poong, he finally admitted his feelings.
Chef Seo Poong (Lee Joon Ho) won the battle but not the war. Sae Woo should enjoy the moment because CEO Yong is determined to yank the rug out beneath him. Try as he might, he couldn’t ignore Sae Woo so close to him. He gave into his own desires and kissed her. Seo Poong was sweet to Chil Seong’s mother when he offered to bridge the awkward moment by cooking for her.
Dan Sae Woo (Jung Ryeo Won) took a wait and see approach with Seo Poong. Stuck in the friend zone, Sae Woo was rightfully irked by Seo Poong’s frequent course corrections. She let him have it. In the end, Seo Poong couldn’t deny his feelings and kissed Sae Woo. It looked like she responded. Meanwhile Sae Woo and Chil Seong agreed to raise the kitten together. That’s cold comfort for Chil Seong.
Doo Chil Seong (Jang Hyuk) rejected then accepted his mother. She didn’t explain why she abandoned him. Chil Seong decided it would be best for them not to have a personal relationship. He told her to go. She told him she’d go. But after Sae Woo pointed out that a parent-child relationship is give and take, Chil Seong decided to introduce his mother to his men and the eatery team. Then he left, leaving his men shocked and wondering if it was true. Jang Hyuk maximized the moments with his mother. You could see him go through the progression of reactions at her news. Chil Seong is a sweet guy. He deserves not only a loving mother but a loving relationship too. Will Writer Seo deliver?

I had to laugh as Poong 👨🍳 went around to hug EVERYONE to deflect from hugging Sae Woo 🤺, much to her dismay … does she not take her family’s threat to quit the restaurant if she likes Poong 👨🍳, seriously ❓⁉️
My heart 💔 broke fir Chil Seung 🕶️ as he cried at the riverbank. I think he was very generous to Gum Lady 🍬/mom. I like that Poong 👨🍳 made food 🍜 for Gum Lady 🍬/mom and Seol Ja 🔪 slapped Maeng Dal 🏍️ upside the head for his abandonment remarks. Seems like the discussion Chil Seung 🕶️ had with Sae Woo 🤺 about raising adorable little Dim Sum 🐈 helped him decide to accept Gum Lady 🍬 as his mom … although I’m not sure she deserves it, but that’s just how the gangsta with a heart of gold 💛, Chil Seung 🕶️, rolls.
What a VICTORY 🙌 for Poong 👨🍳 to win the cook-off 🍜 against Chef Wang❗ However, as KJT mentioned, this was one battle, not the war.
I think stinkin’ CEO Yong 🐖 will do his best to steal the banquet from the Hungry Wok. I REALLY want to see the following:
🔹Either the banquet does NOT get stolen or Hungry Wok can survive despite the theft, cuz’ you KNOW CEO Yong 🐖 capable of almost anything.(Can I say how happy I am that we haven’t had to deal with ex-wife Dal Hee 🐡 for many episodes … we could do VERY WELL without seeing her or Sae Woo’s ex ever again.)
🔹 Poong 👨🍳 beat Chef Wang and CEO Yong 🐖 in the the long run. Send Thief/Chef Wang on a one-way trip back to China.
🔹 Chil Seung 🕶️ beat Bi Dak and CEO Yong 🐖 in taking over the hotel 🏨.
While it was good to see sous chef Bo Ra apologize to Poong 👨🍳 for her duplicity, I’m glad he didn’t hire her.
Ponng tried to be a good 동생 to Chil Seung 🕶️ by staying away from Sae Woo 🤺, flip-flopping 👡 all over the place, but his desire 💞 got the best of him as he gave into his passion. I enjoyed the kiss 💋 between Sae Woo 🤺 and Poong 👨🍳, but part of me feels bad for Chil Seung 🕶️. Maybe his mommy issues will keep him occupied; yeah, I know it won’t. I’m bracing myself for WHEN Chil Seung 🕶️ finds out … will the bromance 💙 be over❓⁉️ A hyung can only take so much … I REALLY want Chil Seung 🕶️ to find his happiness with his mom AND a good woman❗ … where’s IV lady when you need her❓⁉️

Leave Chief Wang alone! (in my Leave Brittany Spears alone” voice.) lol Y’all know I pick a slightly unsavory character that nobody else likes in each show and kinda dig them. What can I say?
He works for scum but what has he, himself directly done wrong? He never stole Poong’s recipes, that was those other two twerps.
I’m happy Chil sun is not getting with Sae woo. I don’t care for her much and, imo, she uses Chil sun to bolster her ego while being very insensitive to his feelings. “Going couplec with the cat is another example of that. She could have left it as Chil sun being the cat’s mom. She’s didn’t need to add herself in as the dad to create an instant couple image. 🤬 It’ll serve her right if Chil sun begins to assume again and then she can’t be with Poongy cause unlike her, Poong cares scott Hyung’s feelings. But I really, really want Chil sun to find the right woman for him. (I’m looking for i.v. lady too, JT.)

I don’t have much to comment. I still love Chilsung and his scenes with kitty were adorable. I guess I’d rather focus on that otherwise I’ll rant and become even more annoying than usual lol. I’ll let ppl who are enjoying the drama just keep doing so.

I am one who is enjoying this drama. I like Lee Joon Ho as Poong 👨🍳 with Sae Woo.
I understand AND FEEL the disappointment of Chil Seung 🕶️ being the third wheel, but so many unhappy viewers don’t like Sae Woo 🤺, so I don’t know what the problem is with her making her love 💖 connection with Poong 👨🍳, other than since they are aware of Chil Seung’s 🕶️ crush 💕, it would be courteous to get hyung’s 💛 blessing. Poong 👨🍳 did make many attempts to avoid being with Sae Woo 🤺 alone.
I TRULY wish 🍀 Hyukie had a 2-sided romance 💕, but he is doing a TERRIFIC job (as usual) with what he has been given. I suspect the pairing the writer had in store for him was reuniting him with his biological mother. After Money 💰🌸 Flower I find it interesting to see Hyukie paired with Lee Mi Sook as his crush’s 💕 disapproving mom, his bio-mom, AND with him playing his own boxing 🥊 father in flashbacks 📸 side-by-side his younger bio-mom. Did anyone else have any “Robber” dejavus❓⁉️

If by chance Gum Lady 🍬 and Jung Hye, Sae Woo’s mom are related, that destroys any possibility between Chil Seung 🕶️ and Sae Woo 🤺 … that’s not all bad … it could help Chil Seung 🕶️ save face.

I keep thinking about young Gum Lady watching Dishwasher Lady on tv (I think) in a paegent (I think) saying “I’m prettier than you”. Granted, maybe I was dreaming during one of my many doze offs…
And I also don’t like the fact that Dishwasher Lady thinks Sae woo is too good for Chil sun (although I understand it as a mom because of his “thug” status) but she’s out of line about Poong’s profession not being good enough, especially since she’s the wife of a jail bird and Sae woo’s the daughter (whether pops is innocent or not!)

You weren’t dozing Beez, Gum Lady 🍬/mom did say that about Jeong Hae 🌰👸 (AKA Onion Queen).
I also don’t like that Jeong Hae 🌰👸 doesn’t think Poong 👨🍳 is good enough for Sae Woo 🤺. But in Kdramaland, and possibly in reality, chaebols don’t want to dilute their wealth, the want to enrich it … In that sense, Sae Woo’s 🤺 stinkin’ husband fit the bill. Poong 👨🍳 or Chil Seung 🕶️ would be a MUCH BETTER choice when it comes to unselfishly caring for Sae Woo 🤺.

And I’m a tad embarrassed 😳, JT, for got being gracious and allowing others to enjoy Wok in peace. Funny how you don’t see the problem until somebody you care about is experiencing it. I’ll try to do better with my negative caustic snarkiness toward shows that I’m watching just for my bias and then shooting the rest of it down.

I’m also finding it a bit disappointing this drama is NOT a vehicle for Hyuk to shine 🌟 as THE star, we KNOW he is capable of being. However, he is doing a FABULOUS job as Chil Seung 🕶️; I cried when he did and want a happy ending for him. I think his upcoming drama “Bad Dad” or whatever they are calling it this week will highlight him as the star 🌟.

I’ve been meaning to ask if anyone else noticed how Chef Yang (Lim Won-Hee) looks as if he took a dip in the fountain of youth since we saw him last in Strong Woman Dok Bong Soo?

I thought that was pretty benevolent of him. Did I miss something (again) -do we know for sure it was a lie? I don’t think he’s all bad since he did protest (slightly) about giving Chef Poong same-day notice of the final cancellation.
My boy! Maeng Dal! He blurted out to Gum Lady “Why did you abandon him?”
Although its my guess that Gum Lady didn’t have the 2000 won ($2) to leave to pay for Chil sun’s meal when she abandoned him. So does that mean she’s been a Gum Lady (homeless) from then to now? Or was she an actual nurse when she nursed Chil sun & the Thug Crew after their auto accident or was she just a volunteer?
I’ve forgiven her already because my guess is she just couldn’t afford to feed Chil sun any longer after her husband died. But how’s awful four Chil sun the way S.K. treats orphans that they wouldn’t even allow him to enter military service where he’d at least be fed 3 meals a day and possibly start an honest life upon discharge.
This show is ever more of a challenge to watch as less time is spent with Huck-a-buck.

I think Gum Lady 🍬 was a nurse’s aide, can’t say if she was paid it not … I suspect when she realized Chil Seung 🕶️ was her son, she decided to stick by his side. I want to hear something from her other than her sputtered denial 🙅♀️ of maternity or I’m sorry. I suspect when the full story is revealed we may feel more understanding towards her and be inclined to forgive, Chil Seung 🕶️ is closer to it than me and as the victim of abandonment HE seems to be included to forgive.
I was aware that orphans were not treated very well in SK 🇰🇷, but Chil Seung’s 🕶️ declaration of not being able to serve in the military as an orphan was the first time I had heard this. I concur with Beezthst it would be nice to hear the perspective of a South Korean 🇰🇷 orphan.
I would have cheered 📣 Maeng Dal’s 🏍️ blurted comment, except it was clear that Chil Seung 🕶️ was trying to look past the abandonment.
Beez, you are welcome to taking Chef Wang. Lim Won-Hee is looking like he has partaken the benefits of the fountain of youth.
I’m not convinced Chef Wang was being benevolent by not serving the “common dishes” 🍜. I felt like preservation of their high-end image was their menu motivation.

🔹Stealing Seol Ja’s 🔪 money 💰 in China 🇨🇳 and running away 🏃 to South Korea 🇰🇷❓⁉️
🔹 Trying to steal Seol Ja 🔪 away from Poong 👨🍳 on the opening day of the Shrimp 🦐 festival❓⁉️

I forgive Chef Yang for what he cadly & cowardly did to Knife Handler when they were young AND chalk it up to youthful stupidity. As for trying to steal her away from Poong, I took that as all’s fair in love and war, and employees. As to the all ways shrimp day – I was okay with the restaurant incorporating that since Chef Ysng duff but user Poong’s shrimp recipes but, yeah, I had forgotten about him burning the cook-notebook. That was unconscionable. I’m embarrassed to admit that the other stuff must’ve happened in the early episodes when I was paying zero attention if Hyuk wasn’t on screen. Thanks for reeling me in from backing a bad guy.

I googled it and didn’t see that addressed specifically, but articles did speak of the neglect/treatment of orphans due to Koreans’ obsession with bloodline. Orphans only began to receive SOMEWHAT better treatment as “national shame” kicked in as Americans adopted so many orphans in the ’80’s that a law was passed prohibiting outside adoptions which means fewer orphans are adopted. (I’m quoting the article. I’m sure native orphaned Koreans could speak with better knowledge and accuracy than “outside” “journalists” and observers.

South Korea has conscription, you serve in the army no matter what. And it’s a tough one, not too many options to dodge, as the country is officially at war with the North-they’re just in a ceasefire mode. However I recall Chil-Sung saying he couldn’t be in the cavalry for being an orphan. Perhaps he’s been denied being a commissioned pro cavalryman. This was my closest interpretation, it was Netflix’s Turkish subtitles, so I take it with a grain of salt though. I think that kinda regulations may exist in other places too, or existed once.

@Ulamax – Oh wait. I see, Chil-sing is Jang Hyuk’s character’s name in Wok of Love. I barely can keep track of characters’ names during the drama, so once is over, I never remember their names.
