Doom at Your Service Episode 12

Myul Mang (aka Doom ) (Seo In Guk) stops a bad man from committing arson. He points out that his previous crime cruelty to animals and the elderly make him unworthy to live.

Tak Dong Kyung (Park Bo Young) arrives at the hospital.

Doom visits Sonyeoshin (non-human being / god).

Dong Kyung has her appointment with Dr. Jung Dang Myun (Writer/Doctor). After surgery, chemo and radiation will the protocol for her brain tumor. He admits he’s relieved she finally sought treatment. Dong Kyung admits she can’t recall why she waited. He appreciates the apples she gives him. He hopes this time, a nice person like her wins.

Doom isn’t sure humans are worth the pain that Sonyeoshin goes through. She says they are. He points out they have different perspectives on humans. He doesn’t like even one of them.  Knowing she wipes Dong Kyung’s memory; she tells Doom she sorry. He doesn’t know why and leaves. Sonyeoshin apologizes to the drooping flower in the pot.

Dong Kyung and Doom literally run into each other. He reads her mind and tells her he’s busy. He walks away. She walks away. Doom stops, there’s something about her.

Dong Kyung takes apples to the writer with cancer. She’s happy the surgery went well. The writer asks Dong Kyung why she’s subdued when she was positive before. Dong Kyung admits she can’t remember. She assumes the tumor is robbing her of the happy memories. The writer takes Dong Kyung’s hand and thanks her for coming to visit. She pledges to visit Dong Kyung during her treatment period. She gives Dong Kyung’s tulips stating she doesn’t have a vase to properly store them. Dong Kyung smiles at the perky flowers.

Dong Kyung packs for her stay in the hospital. Her brother Tak Sun Kyung sees a text from Dong Kyung’s former boyfriend. Dong Kyung grabs the phone. Kang Soo Ja (Dong Kyung’s aunt) perks up at the news. Dong Kyung can’t believe her former boyfriend text. She blocks him.

Doom drinks alone in his apartment. He sees the clock is almost at midnight. Something hovers in his brain but he can’t recall it.

Dong Kyung looks at the night sky. Her aunt tells her husband will return to Korea after he takes care of things in Canada. She tells Dong Kyung she wants to be with her and support her during this time. Dong Kyung smiles.

Writer Na Ji Na struggles to write the next chapter in her story.

She goes to the hospital and helps Dong Kyung get settled in her room. Dong Kyung asks how the writing is going. Ji Na admits she’s struggling with the story. Dong Kyung encourages her to focus then write. They leave to get a drink. They overhear two patients discuss the ghost in the hospital, the handsome doctor who seems to take different forms. Dong Kyung shares she saw a handsome doctor today.

Dong Kyung walks Ji Na to her car. She tells her friend to go home and write.

Doom approaches a man at his son’s memorial service. He asks the father if he’s happy he got away with killing his son. The father asks if his ex-wife sent him. The father declares she’s crazy. Doom knows the father is happy his son is dead. Doom wonders if the father could endure the same injuries, he gave his son. The man’s leg and two ribs are broken with a wave of Doom’s hand.

Dong Kyung drops her red string bracelet. It goes under a car. She reaches to retrieve it.

Doom follows the murderer father into the parking garage. The father tries to get away but Doom won’t stop. He starts to strangle the father. Dong Kyung sees them. Doom sees her. The father gets away while Doom is distracted.

Cha Joo Ik (Lee Soo Hyuk) reads the first chapter of Ji Na’s latest story. He knows she’s describing their first encounter 9 years ago. He puts the tablet with the story on the coffee table, puts on his coat and leaves the apartment. His roommate, Lee Hyun Kyu (Dong Kyung’s first love) hears him leave. He finds the tablet on the coffee table. He reads the first chapter of the story. He wonders about the writer’s name.

Dong Kyung runs into Joo Ik out for a breath of air. He knows she’s stuck in her writing. She reminds him that he pulled away from her. Joo Ik informs her he quit his job. He wonders if she’s stuck because of him. He knows he’s the male lead in the first chapter. That gets Ji Na’s attention.

At Ji Na’s apartment, she denies Joo Ik is the male lead. He asks if she likes him. If she’ll tell him the truth, he’ll know if they have a chance or if he’ll be stuck in a one-way love. Ji Na is surprised. Joo Ik tells her to write the next chapter to describe what happens when they male and female lead meet 9 years later.  He leaves a surprised Ji Na behind.

Dong Kyung brings Doom coffee which he rejects. She touches him to make sure he’s not a ghost. She asks what his powers are. She wonders if he is the ghost she saw earlier. Reading her thoughts, Doom is surprised that Dong Kyung saw the real him earlier and now. Dong Kyung wonders if he’s a hallucination. Doom tells her to think of him like a hallucination. She doesn’t understand why he’s picking on her. Doom bluntly states she’ll die, no matter what medical treatment she gets. He stands to leave. He warns her if she tells others about him, they’ll think her tumor is making her crazy. Dong Kyung isn’t impressed.

The murderous father stops driving and wonders why he’s so sleepy. He wakes in the hospital morgue, inside a drawer. He calls for help. Doom opens the door and slides him out. Doom asks how it feels to be trapped in the same way he trapped others. The men beg for forgiveness. Doom states the man had plenty of chances to reform and it is too late. The man slides back into the door.

In Dong Kyung’s room the other patients discuss the two odd instances in the hospital – the arsonist that came to the emergency room after eating rat poison and declaring it was his fault and the murderous father that crawled into the morgue.  Dong Kyung and Aunt Kang can’t help but listen. Dong Kyung tells Aunt Kang all this talk makes her uncomfortable in this hospital. But her doctor practices there so that’s where she’ll stay. Sun Kyung brings cookies for Dong Kyung and all the other ladies in the room. They love it. Sun Kyung leaves for work. Dong Kyung is surprised when Writer Kwi Gong Ja (boy band wanna be) visits.

He claims he’s there to make her stay better. Dong Kyung is “impressed” with the objective but guesses he wanted to gauge his popularity. He asks what choice she made. Writer Kwi reminds previously she shared if she chose the person she loved, the world was doomed. If she didn’t choose to doom the world, the person she loved would die. Dong Kyung doesn’t remember. He can’t get it out of his head. It would be perfect for a regression plot point. Eliminate the choice by going back in time. Though maybe she’d still fall in love, forcing her to make the choice. Dong Kyung likes the plot point. Writer Kwi admits he’ll write in secret. He wishes her well until the next time he visits. Dong Kyung is surprised when he claims he is shy and doesn’t have many friends.

Ji Na struggles with the story. She remembers Joo Ik asking if she likes him.

Hyun Kyu wonders about the writer’s name. Sun Kyung hears him and notes that writer’s name is his name. Hyun Kyu realizes he’s correct. Ji Na texts Hyun Kyu to meet her. Hyun Kyu leaves the coffee café in Sun Kyung’s capable hands.

Dong Kyung thanks Writer Kwi for the visit. She walks him to the elevator. After he enters, he wishes her luck. She chuckles.

Dong Kyung see Sonyeoshin in the hallway struggling to open a bottle. She stops and opens the bottle for her. Sonyeoshin recommends she try the roof top terrace for the views.

Writer Kwi sees Doom in the lobby. Doom notices him. Writer Kwi assumes Doom wants an autograph. They bicker. Doom wonders where he’s seen that guy before.

In Sonyeoshin’s room, Doom shares that a human recognized him. He says it doesn’t matter because she’ll die next month. Doom notices Dong Kyung’s flower is almost dead. He asks how he’s the flower.

Hyun Kyu and Ji Na dine together. Their conversation is stilted. The easy flow of nine years ago is gone. Ji Na drives him home. She admits she didn’t want to drink because she might overshare. Their discussion proves they don’t know each other anymore. When they arrive at Hyun Kyu’s apartment building, he asks what name Ji Na writes under. He says the name. She assumes Joo Ik told him. Hyun Kyu assures her Joo Ik didn’t tell her. He knows her stories featured him as the male lead. But her newest story features a different male lead. Hyun Kyu leaves after telling Ji Na they should drink together next date. He smiles and waves. Ji Na is unsettled and drives away.

Hyun Kyu watches Joo Ik walk to the building. They stare at each other.

Dong Kyung loves the rooftop terrace. Doom sees her and she sees him. They bicker. Doom shares he isn’t a ghost nor human. Dong Kyung admits life isn’t a challenge and she wants doom upon the world. Doom asks if that’s her wish. She won’t confirm that. He steps close. Doom smiles and says she has potential. That makes Dong Kyung nervous. She says if he wanted to make her leave, he succeeded.

Dong Kyung and Doom step into the elevator. Doom tells her she’ll experience pain soon. Dong Kyung grabs her head and sinks to her knees when the pain hits. She asks Doom to help her. He asks if that’s her wish. Doom asks what she’ll do him. She holds his coat. He takes her hand and the pain is gone. He tells her to beg him to bring doom on the world. She doesn’t understand. He points out there will always be bad people. If she wishes, they’ll be wiped out. Dong Kyung doesn’t believe he can do that. When doors open, they are at the beach.

Doom asks how she can explain being at the beach she wanted to be at. She asks who he is. He says he’s Doom. He offers to relieve her pain. In exchange, they’ll agree to a contract where Dong Kyung wishes doom upon the world. Dong Kyung asks why Doom doesn’t make the wish himself. Doom states he can’t. He knows he’s met her before. He tells her it is time to decide if she’ll take his terms. He holds out his hand. Dong Kyung declines the offer. She knows she was here previously with someone she loved but the memory is just out of reach. She blames her illness on the impression. Doom asks about her bracelet. Dong Kyung admits she doesn’t remember everything but feels uneasy if she isn’t wearing. Doom stares into her. He put his hand to her face. She stares into his eyes. Doom is in his apartment. Dong Kyung is in the elevator. She feel tears on her face. Doom feels the tears on his face.

Sonyeoshin looks at the flower pot. Doom strides into the room and asks what she did to him. Sonyeoshin says she did it to Dong Kyung. He leaves the room. Sonyeoshin sees the flower perk up. She notes some things can’t be helped.

Dong Kyung looks in her contact list. She sees Doom’s contact. She calls the number. The elevator opens. Doom is standing there. His phone is ringing. Dong Kyung turns. They lock eyes. Doom says her name. She asks how he knows her. Doom asks who she is.

My Thoughts

It wasn’t a complete reset. Writer Im Meari started the episode so it was obvious which choice Dong Kyung made at the end of the last episode – erase Doom from her life and void the contract that someone she loves will die or the world will face doom. They didn’t know each other. But still, they felt each other. I like how Writer Im led us on their rediscovery of each other. The love triangle progressed. Ji Na went on a date Hyun Kyu to see if they were right for each other. She realized the nine years apart mean they had evolved. What they thought they knew about each other, was no longer true. I loved Joo Ik’s simple question – did Ji Na like him or was his love doomed to be one sided?

Tak Dong Kyung (Park Bo Young) couldn’t shake the pull to Doom.  Dong Kyung chose to erase Doom from her life. She didn’t know him. But she felt a pull to him. Writer Im cleverly wove in many moments and symbols from early episodes. This time things weren’t the same but they weren’t completely different either. Did Sonyeoshin play match maker when she sent Dong Kyung to roof?

Myul Mang / Doom (Seo In Guk) realized Sonyeoshin had something to do with Dong Kyung. He felt things about Dong Kyung that he couldn’t explain. He demanded an explanation from Sonyeoshin. She admitted she manipulated Dong Kyung. Doom’s flower was once again thriving. I liked the seeing the darker Doom as he pursued terrible humans that made the world a worse place. I especially liked how he put the murderous father in the morgue. Who wouldn’t be unnerved by that?

The fifth song of the OST is “All of My Love” sung by Davich.

I rank this episode as almost terrific, 8.5 on a 10-point scale.

“I loved Joo Ik’s simple question – did Ji Na like him or was his love doomed to be one sided?” -KJT. I don’t think Ji Na has a clue what she wants. Although it is clear to Ji Na that both she and Hyun Kyu have changed since they dated 9 years ago. I hope she makes the choice that will make her happiest. Hyun Kyu didn’t make much effort to hang onto Ji Na in the past, although he has now stepped it up. Joo Ik has certainly made more of an effort to win her, but I don’t like his manipulations.

I 💗 how Dong Kyung and Myul Mang/Doom were both drawn to each other feeling déjà vu. “Did Sonyeoshin play match maker when she sent Dong Kyung to roof?” -KJT. I believe Sonyeoshin not only played matchmaker, but made it possible for our OTP to remove the dreaded contract that was the ominous black cloud hanging over them; although Dong Kyung’s impending death was not changed … yet … hopefully 🙏.

She’s got an interesting choice. Two men that have supposedly loved her since high school, yet both let her languish in pain for years.

There is hope…repeat after me…there is hope.

Jane ‘…but I don’t like his manipulations.’ and kjt ‘…yet both let her languish in pain for years.’ ~I have a different take on it: in an earlier comment I said Joo Ik was being patient and I still feel that. He loves both Hyun Kyu and Ji Na and has been waiting for each to sort their relationship in hopes of keeping close to both. I don’t see him manipulating Ji Na, he is respectfully giving her the opportunity to rethink her first love by giving her space and an alternative. He has observed the shift in their relationship and has become clear/clean to Hyun Kyu that he wants to step into the gap (if possible) but keep their brotherhood. I see Ji Na’s pain as of her own making in clinging to Hyun Kyu who didn’t have the courage or clarity to be in relationship with her. Would she have accepted Joo Ik if he had stepped up earlier, before Hyun Kyu (returned)? Although I can’t predict a ‘happy ending’ for the 3 of them, Joo Ik has been the most mature and considerate. Jmo always.

I am glad the writer didn’t drag out the amnesia angle with our otp, I agree with Jane it was an effective way to get rid of the no-way-out contract.

I like your deconstruction of his actions. You effectively pointed out a different point of view. Since I like Joo Ik a great deal, I’m going with it!
