Lovestruck in the City Episode 5

Episode 5 – What do you do with the memory box after breaking up?

Flashback…2017…After breaking up Oh Seong Yeong demands that Kang Gun return what she gave him. She forces him to divest himself of clothing and shoes on a cold winter day. Humiliated he walks barefoot to the bus stop. A nice guy takes pity on him and lends him shoes and a jacket. They get to talking and realize they went to the same school. They decide a drink is in order.

Lee Eun O (Kim Ji Won) claims she threw everything away. Park Jae Won (Ji Chang Wook) kept everything.

Choi Kyeong Jun (29, architect, Jae Won’s cousin, who works at company Jae Won’s father created) claims he’d give everything back while Suh Rin I (29, Kyeong Jun’s girlfriend of 5 years) says she’d throw away whatever was given back to her.

Flashback…After breaking up Kyeong Jun goes to SJ’s workplace to return the items she gave him. He ends up talking her into giving them another chance.

Jae Won wonders what happened to the cameras that he left in Eun O’s care when he had to leave his vacation and their time together to deal with a work crisis.

Flashback…2019…September…Jae Won’s vacation…Jae Won makes a surfboard for Eun O and films the process in stills and video.  Eun O is interested in his cameras and Jae Won offers guidance. They end up exploring the island and taking photos of each other along the way.

Jae Won states he gave the cameras to Eun O because she loved them. Suh Rin and Kyeong Jun are surprised Jae Won gave them to her. Jae Won wonders what happened to them. Oh Seong Yeong (30, gym teacher) guesses they were sold. Jae Won asks Eun O if she sold the cameras. More importantly why.

Eun O says everything she was those two months was a lie but her love was real. Jae Won wants to find her.

Eun O is determined not to look back but forward. She enters her apartment and Kang Gun (29, writer) is there cooking! They cook a meal together. Eun O starts to tell him about working at the beachside café but cuts herself off. Kang Gun finds rolls of film from Jae Won’s cameras in the fridge.

Flashback…Jae Won shows Eun O that it is best to put the film in the fridge. He asks her to keep it there and he’ll get it developed at his favorite photography shop in Seoul.

Oh Seong Yeong (30, gym teacher) knows Kang Gun lives with Eun O. She says they broke up because of Eun O. She believes they will marry one day.

Eun O takes the film to be developed at the photography shop Jae Won uses. She decides to wait for the prints.

Jae Won takes photos. He calls the manager of the photograph shop to see when prints can be made from the uploaded images. The manger says he’s busy with another job. He’ll get to them tomorrow.

The manager recognizes Jae Won in the photo. Eun O insists the guy isn’t the architect he knows.

Jae Won admits he didn’t give Eun O the cameras. He left the camera bag by mistake. He didn’t think anything of it, assuming she’d bring it when they met in Seoul.

Eun O looks at the photographs. Eun O looks at the video on one of the cameras Jae Won left with her. It’s the video of him making her the surfboard.

Flashback…Jae Won surprises Eun O with the handmade surfboards, one for her and one for him. She loves it. Jae Won declares now they design and paint the surfboards.

Eun O stops the video and cries.

Jae Won goes to the spot where he was to meet Eun O. He shares Eun O never called him, she never came to the meeting, she only left a voice message “I enjoyed our time together. We shouldn’t see each other again. I’m keeping the cameras. That was my intention.” Jae Won admits he’s never shared this. He doesn’t understand her voice message.

My Thoughts

Eun O kept the cameras. Writer Jung Hyun Jung (Romance is a Bonus Book) focused the fifth episode on the question of material gifts after breakup – return or keep. All the characters weighed in. Seong Yeong demanded Kang Gun strip to return certain items. She admitted that she knew Kang Gun and Eun O live together. She shared Eun O was why they broke up and assumed they’d marry. Kyeong Jun and Suh Rin shared their breakup moment and how Kyeong Jun leveraged the items to win her back. We saw that Jae Won accidentally left his cameras with Eun O. Her breakup voicemail claimed she wouldn’t return them and that was her intention from the beginning. The connection between Eun O and Kang Gun took me by surprise.

Park Jae Won (Ji Chang Wook) got stood up by Eun O. I shake my head that he didn’t get where she lived and worked before he returned to Seoul. It left him in the position of waiting for her and she never showed. Eun O keeping the cameras then lying to him that she intentionally targeted those items doesn’t ring true. But to a hurt Jae Won, it only confused him. The poor man needs closure.

Lee Eun O (Kim Ji Won) is living with Kang Gun. Color me surprised. I assumed platonic but Seong Yeong implied otherwise. Their kitchen scene didn’t seem romantic. Eun O still cares about BB. She got the photos developed. She watched the video. Her ruse of trying on a different persona during vacation is supposedly why she broke up with Jae Won. That seems like a flimsy excuse. Eun O isn’t coming off well in how she handled the breakup. Did she have a romantic relationship with Kang Gun? When did it end or is in on-going?

  1. Jane Tilly says:

Eun O living with Kang Gun is puzzling … I’m confused … I concur that their relationship doesn’t seem to be romantic … is it platonic or not❓⁉️ Kang Gun claims to “voluntarily single”, yet he is living with Eun O, who Seong Yeong thinks broke up her relationship with Kang Gun. I think we have a whole lot of layers to peel this onion.

  2. Kukulhu says:

I have been search like crazy for the song at the end of ep 5

    Does anyone know?

It goes like “love show me the way the way that works …”
