Would I Want My Brother to Date Her? The King: Eternal Monarch
Is a female character worthy to date someone I care about such as my brother? For this installment of Would I Want My Brother to Date Her? I reflect upon the female lead from the series The King: Eternal Monarch.
Our candidate. Detective Jung Tae Eul, portrayed by Kim Go Eun, encounters a man that claims to be from a parallel world. Naturally skeptical, in time she realizes he’s telling the truth.
Background. Tae Eul has a positive life – good job, coworkers, friends and father. When she meets Lee Gon, who claims to be from a parallel world she naturally doubts him. But the evidence can’t be denied and she realizes he’s telling the truth. In Lee Gon she finds a partner, friend, and lover.
Her pluses:
STRAIGHT FORWARD. Tae Eul is a direct and capable officer that doesn’t suffer fools. Her brain power is as good as her brawn.
SUPPORTIVE FRIEND. Tae Eul has close relationships with her friends and co-workers. She has their backs. When she decided Lee Gon was telling the truth about the parallel world and his goals to defeat Team Evil, Tae Eul didn’t hesitate to lend her (and her friends’) support.
ACTION ORIENTED. Tae Eul didn’t sit on the sidelines in solving the mysteries and working to beat the evil forces. In the finale she risked her life and directly engaged with the big bad. Beyond that, once Tae Eul realized she should not waste time with Lee Gon, she admitted her feelings and acted upon them.
Her minuses:
DISBELIEF. Tae Eul took a while to come to the conclusion that Lee Gon was telling the truth. During that time, she kept him at arm’s length and wasn’t always kind. Granted this Writer Kim’s character development path for this character. None the less, it took me a while to warm to Tae Eul.
Would I Want Her to Date my Brother?
👍 Yes. I want a woman that would be “all in” for my brother. Tae Eul is such a woman. If she commits to you as a friend, family, or lover, she’s there for you and will support you no matter what.
Yes (except for her dangerous occupation). I thought Tae eul was an awesome character. As to her initial treatment of Lee Gon, I thought she treated him better than was warranted. Most police officers would’ve called the South Korean equivalent of Bellview.
She actually accompanied this handsome nutjob to the pawn shop. I might be wrong (but I don’t think so) that S.K. does not allow its citizens to walk around without their fingerprints on record. Now what do they do with someone whose not registered and has no passport? I’m not sure, but I don’t think they just walk around paying for 5-Star hotels with their diamond coat buttons. 😆

I’ll agree with that.

Lee Gon was the first character to utilize his buttons as currency that I can think of!

Yes. It was cute and appealing. I can see if I was in Tae eul’s shoes, that more than anything else would have made me believe he’s royalty from somewhere (but not a parallel universe) 😆

I believe Gon used Eun Sub’s name to book the hotel and paid in cash from selling his gems and precious metals.
You’re right Beez about jewelers or pawn shops needing identification to sell gems, at least in the U.S. where the sale of gems and precious metals require ID, so names can be checked against the government financial sanctions lists. I found it odd that Tae Eul, who didn’t believe Gon’s story, lended her police credentials to allow him to sell the gems.
Then again there are always unscrupulous business owners who are willing to do business when big profits are at stake.

Yes, I would introduce Tae Eul to my brother. Once she has accepted a person, she is steadfast and committed to the relationship, and very supportive. These are qualities my brother needs in a significant other. My only reservation would be her dangerous occupation of police officer, but if my brother was OK with it, Tae Eul is a great gal.

Well said. Romantic or friendship Tae Eul is a winner.
