The King: Eternal Monarch Episode 13 Recap

The King: Eternal Monarch Episode 13 Recap

2019…Kingdom of Corea…

Court Lady Noh Ok Nam tells Tae Eul she left her hometown when she was young and hasn’t heard news of it for 67 years. She asks what happened in the war that began in 1950. Detective Jung Tae Eul (Kim Go Eun) grapples then gets it. Court Lady Noh is from her world not this one. Court Lady Noh confirms that Tae Eul is correct. Her family was dead, the war had started, and when a man appeared and asked if she wanted to go to a world without war, she took the opportunity only taking a book with her. Court Lady Noh identifies Lee Gon’s grandfather, King Haejong, as the man that brought her to this world. Tae Eul explains the war ended with a divided Korea. Court Lady Noh declares coming to this world was her destiny, just like Tae Eul coming to this world is her destiny.

King Lee Gon (Lee Min Ho) finds Prime Minister Goo Seo Ryung (Jung Eun Chae) in his study. She claims she’s feeling much better. He asks why she tied him down. She asks where would he have gone. She wants to talk about his marriage proposal. Lee Gon confirms that he has proposed to the woman he loves and supports. Prime Minister Goo says he’s always honest. She notes that woman is a criminal. Lee Gon counters that is none of her business. She admits she liked being next to him. She threatens that he might see her oppose him now. Lee Gon warns her not to threaten him. Prime Minister Goo counters that she started with nothing and he started with everything. She’s risen to stand next to him politically and hoped for personally. Now that he’s no longer available, she will work for herself.  Thunder strikes. Lee Gon tries not to show his pain. Prime Minister Goo’s throat lights up and she clutches it in pain. They stare at each other. Prime Minister Goo lies that she’s not fully recovered from her illness. She exits. Lee Gon places a call to found out if the autopsy report for Kim Gi Hwan (part of the assassins that killed Lee Gon’s father 24 years ago) is available.

Tae Eul walks the palace hallway and thinks of Court Lady Noh stating when a young Lee Gon grabbed her police ID, she became his guiding light and to support him well. Prime Minister Goo turns into the hallway. Tae Eul tells Prime Minister Goo that they met in Republic of Korea and her name was Koo Eun A. Prime Minister Goo fake laughs noting not many people mistake the Prime Minister for someone else. She refers to their meeting that night Busan. She says the king’s proposal took the nation by surprise. Tae Eul asks what activities she did in Republic of Korea. Prime Minister Goo warns her to stop being cocky. Tae Eul counters the other woman stopped to converse. Prime Minister Goo says all her activities have been in Corea. Thunder strikes. Prime Minister Goo’s throat lights up and she clinches in pain. Tae Eul stares. Prime Minister Goo walks away. Tae Eul runs to Lee Gon’s study.

Tae Eul finds Lee Gon ending a phone call. He tells her the mark was found on Gi Hwan’s body. Tae Eul asks if Lee Gon knows Prime Minister Goo has the mark too. She tells Lee Gon in the hallway she saw Prime Minister Goo’s throat light up. Tae Eul saw Prime Minister Goo in Republic of Korea. Lee Gon states Prime Minister Goo tied him down to align with Lee Rim. Tae Eul worries now that Prime Minister Goo has been unmasked, she’ll act recklessly. Lee Gon believes that could work to their advantage. He can be unstoppable when he’s reckless. He apologizes for leaving Tae Eul. She assures him she knows she must stay concealed. Lee Gon says he’ll return tomorrow morning with Eun Sub.

Security Soek leads Lee Gon to Forensics Officer Kim. She shows Lee Gon photos of Gi Hwan’s scar. She shows Lee Gon photos of 3 others that displayed similar scars that all died on rainy days like today. She notes they served time in prison for parricide, the killing of a parent or other near relative. Lee Gon realizes those that crossed to the other world killed family members that could unmask them. He asks her to look for other bodies with marks like this.

A man injects a syringe into an IV bag. Jo Eun Sub (Woo Do Hwan) asks the man what he’s doing and shows him the IV is not in his arm. The man goes to stab him but Eun Sub gun to the man’s head trumps the knife. He asks the man if he wants to know a secret before he dies.

Smooth move Eun Sub!

Flashback…Eun Sub searches his room and is startled to find listening devices. He talks to the listening device and pretends to tell the king he’s being released tomorrow.

The man tries to flee the room but Security Seok and other men are waiting guns drawn. Lee Gon walks into frame and motions for the man to be taken away.

Eun Sub is pleased with himself. Lee Gon has to smile. Eun Sub worries that Corea won’t function without him. He asks when he and Tae Eul will return to Korea. Lee Gon guesses tomorrow morning. Lighting strikes. Lee Gon winces in pain. He asks Eun Sub if he has a scar when lighting strikes. Eun Sub scoffs he’s too young for such things. Lee Gon muses that neither Eun Sub or Tae Eul have it, but he does. Eun Sub asks what the mark is. Lee Gon says it is the mark of those that killed their counterparts. He wonders what the scar means.

That’s a bit murky that the mark/tattoo means the counterpart was murdered. Does the mark auto generate?

Prime Minister Goo stares at her neck. Her secretary reports her ex-husband is on the early release list. She asks for an appointment with a dermatologist. Her secretary asks what she did on her vacation. Prime Minister Goo states it is better than he not know.

Flashback…Eosu Bookstore…Prime Minister Goo meets Prince Geum Lee Rim (Lee Jung Jin) (Lee Gon’s uncle) wondering if he’s Lee Rim’s hidden son because the man before her hasn’t aged. She asks who he is. She tosses the Korea newspaper in the table and asks if he sent it to her. Lee Rim says her parents respected and deferred to him. Prime Minister Goo realizes this is Lee Rim. She asks why he hasn’t aged. She opens the newspaper and asks why a picture of a woman that looks like her is featured. Lee Rim says he hasn’t aged and the woman is her double in another world. He says there is a parallel world called the Republic of Korea. Prime Minister Goo asks if he plans to replace her with the other woman. He laughs. He notes she’s the first person that he recognized the next step without him explaining it. He asks what her choice is. Prime Minister Goo laughs. She says royalty always make her smile. She wants proof. She tells Lee Rim to take her to the parallel world.

Lee Rim’s hidden son? That could be big. Prime Minister Goo is the perfect partner for Lee Rim.

Prime Minister Goo stares at the shoes she bought in Republic of Korea. She thinks the king has decided where she’ll wear these shoes.

It’s about time Prime Minister Goo did more than annoy us with her desire to marry Lee Gon.

Lee Gon is surprised to learn that Tae Eul has left the palace. His secretary informs him that the biggest security guard was assigned to be her protector and she has a cell phone too.

I would think that Lee Gon would want to know this BEFORE Tae Eul left the palace.

Tae Eul tells Security Jang Mi Reuk (Kang Hong Suk) that he looks just like JangMi (Detective Jang). He’s surprised she knows his nickname. She asks him to take her to an area where she regained consciousness when she was abducted. She remembers smelling something sweet. Security Jang believes it was a cinnamon tree grove.

Lee Gon decides not to call Tae Eul but is irked she left without him. He tells his secretary not to announce his engagement as he hasn’t received a yes to his proposal yet. He smiles at his secretary’s surprise. He declares dealing with Prime Minister Goo is the most important matter and that means dealing with her ex-husband Chairman Choi who is in prison. Chairman Choi must decide if he’ll support the king or his ex. Lee Gon directs this is a one-time choice. He asks where Court Lady Noh is.

Court Lady Noh enters and his secretary exits. Court Lady Noh shares she caught the spy and learned poison was the methodology.

Flashback…Court Lady Noh feeds food to the chickens, who die.

Court Lady Noh says Ms. Park (Park Sook Jin who is Shin Jae’s mother’s Kingdom of Corea counterpart) had been visiting the bookstore of the traitors. She has a photo that Ms. Park tried to burn. Lee Gon stares at the photo of Shin Jae and his mother Min Hwa Yun dining in Republic of Korea. He murmurs Shin Jae’s parent were being used. He notes he still owes Shin Jae for a meal. Court Lady Noh reports Ms. Park has regained consciousness and wants to speak with him.

Lee Gon visits Ms. Park. He notes she fooled him for too long. She says she saw him with her son Shin Jae. She got the photo from Lee Rim and the poison.

Flashback… Lee Rim gives her poison to administer saying her mission isn’t done yet. He hands over a photo of Shin Jae and Lee Gon. He tells her this will be the last photo.

Ms. Park decided to drink the poison herself instead of poisoning him. She’d either day or be able to speak to him. She kneels and asks for his protection for her son.

Lee Rim used her love for her son to for her to do his bidding, though she gave him up as a child to Lee Rim, that’s on her if she wasn’t blackmailed into that decision.

A heavily pregnant Park Ji Young (the Korean version) mentally reviews everyone she’s supposed to know.

2019…Republic of Korea…

A heavily pregnant Park Ji Young (the Corean counterpart) wakes and finds herself in her Korean counterpart’s shabby apartment. She freaks.

At least she’s alive.

Luna (Kim Go Eun) stares at Tae Eul’s house. Her father comes up next to her and shows her the soybean paste they can use for supper. He makes soup. They sit down to eat. Luna can’t stop staring. Tae Eul’s father chides her to dig in. Luna asks if she’s a nice daughter. He teases her and leaves her to eat the soup. Luna enters Tae Eul’s room. She looks at her clothes. She pushes the stuffed animal (that Tae Eul won) off the bed. She stares at the stars Tae Eul taped to the sky. She murmurs Gemini. She gets of the bed.

I’m glad she’s uncomfortable.

Song Jeong Hye (looks like Lee Gon’s mother)  stares at the house where she used to work when she cared for young Lee Ji Hun (Lee Gon’s Korean counterpart murdered by Lee Rim). She sees Min Hwa Yun (Shin Jae’s mother) walking down the street and threatens to scream if Lee Rim’s driver doesn’t let her exit the car. Song Jeong Hye approaches Ms. Min who remembers her after some prompting. Song Jeong Hye asks if she lives in the house. Ms. Min is forced to explain she and Shin Jae moved and now she does housekeeping in the neighborhood. Song Jeong Hye suggests they have a meal. Taken aback, Ms. Min can’t say no when Song Jeong Hye insists. Jo Young (Woo Do Hwan) watches.

Song Jeong Hye assumes Ms. Min still has the hospital costs due to Shin Jae’s comatose state. Ms. Min declares her son woke from the coma after a year. Song Jeong Hye is shocked. Ms. Min shares a photo of Shin Jae in a police uniform. Song Jeong Hye remembers seeing Shin Jae when she visited Lee Ji Hun’s memorial marker. Ms. Min asks how Lee Ji Hun is doing. Song Jeong Hye cuts the meal short. She thanks Ms. Min for being a kind employer. She hands over a wad of cash and leaves a startled Ms. Min calling after her. Song Jeong Hye dashes into the elevator with Lee Rim’s driver in tow. Jo Young enters the elevator just as the doors close.

Kingdom of Corea…

A worried Lee Gon is relieved with Tae Eul returns from her outing. Tae Eul declares she may be close to finding Lee Rim’s bamboo forest (aka Lee Rim’s time portal location). Tae Eul tells him Security Jang will watch the area and know when Lee Rim travels. Lee Gon tells her that when Lee Rim time travels, time stops, and the length of time increases every iteration. Lee Gon says the increment is 1 hour now. Tae Eul realizes that Lee Gon’s men would be in danger as only Lee Rim can move during the time stop. She hugs him knowing that Lee Gon’s alone as time stops. He hugs her back. Tae Eul asks THE question…is there anyway to fix this? Lee Gon believes because the magic flute is split its half power status is causing the dimensions between the worlds to sever. Lee Gon wonders if the magic flute were made whole if the dimensions would auto repair. Tae Eul wonders if Lee Rim will take Lee Gon’s place or if Lee Gon will take Lee Rim’s place. Lee Gon believes he can stop Lee Rim before he gets the other half of the magic flute. Tae Eul notes that happened in the past. Lee Gon believes he can go back in time as well as between the worlds. He believes time travel explains how he got Tae Eul’s ID card 25 years ago. Tae Eul asks if he’s found how to time travel. Lee Gon shares that he’s not reached the edge of the in between world but a tossed coin floats. He notes the seeds she planted sank. Tae Eul shows him a new packet of seeds (named magic lily) she purchased. Lee Gon asks if she believes flowers will blow in the in between world. Tae Eul asks if Lee Gon is worried a whole magic flute might stop the ability to travel between Corea and Korea. She chides him not to worry in advance. She starts to leave him an evening alone, but Lee Gon calls the guards. They bicker enroute.

In between World…

Tae Eul plants the magic lily seeds as Lee Gon watches. Eun Sub is stares at the coin suspended in midair.

Republic of Korea…

Tae Eul’s father sees 3 underage boys smoking and calls them on it. They scoff he says he can make them stop. He does a spin move and knocks a cigarette out of one of the boy’s mouths. Then he hands out flyers for his Taekwondo Center. Tae Eul arrives and flashes her badge. She rushes to her father and hugs him hard. She apologizes for not being around. Her father says he’s seen her everyday and has enjoyed the texts they’ve shared. That gets Tae Eul’s attention.

Tae Eul enters her room and looks around. She takes her father’s phone and leaves.

Detective Gang Shin Jae (Kim Kyung Nam) shares a meal with Jo Young and grouses the Lee Gon didn’t fund him well. Jo Young asks who Kang Hyeon Min is.

Flashback…Jo Young stares at his evidence board that includes Gi Hwan and Kang Hyeon Min.

Shin Jae doesn’t answer. Jo Young asks if Kang Hyeon Min was Shin Jae’s name in Corea. Shin Jae believes it was. Jo Young asks if there is anything Shin Jae wants to know about Kang Hyeon Min.

Flashback…Jo Young recalls walking past Ms. Park (Shin Jae’s mother in Corea) at the palace.

Jo Young asks if Shin Jae wants to find out about his mother in Corea. Shin Jae admits he’s interested in his mother, father, and any siblings. He asks if Jo Young knows something he’s not telling him. Jo Young changes the subject and notes Shin Jae likes Tae Eul. That isn’t appreciated. Jo Young states Lee Gon and Tae Eul cannot be together forever because their worlds are too far apart. Shin Jae says that people in the same world can be far apart. Shin Jae stands to leave. Jo Young notes leaving means Jo Young is right. Shin Jae confirms he likes Tae Eul. He leaves.

Good scene!

Shin Jae sees Luna feeding a cat. He asks why she hasn’t answered his calls or texts. Luna stares at him. Shin Jae asks if she’s okay. Luna kisses him. Shin Jae pushes her away. She gets a call from her father and steps away. Shin Jae follows but she’s gone.

Shin Jae is startled when Tae Eul taps him holding her father’s phone. She says her phone’s location is nearby. Shin Jae realizes the other woman wasn’t Tae Eul. She realizes he saw her Corean counterpart. Shin Jae grapples with it and asks if Tae Eul just arrived. Tae Eul demands to know if her Corean counterpart looks exactly like her. She misses her phone. Shin Jae says her counterpart has applied to take vacation. He tells her to go to the station and cancel that. He walks away.

Tae Eul murmurs that’s where her ID card is. Tae Eul calls her cell phone. Luna answers. They both acknowledge they know who the other is. Tae Eul suggests they meet. Luna counters if they meet, Tae Eul will die. After warning Luna not to hurt those she loves, Luna counters that she could have done that while Tae Eul was away but didn’t. Luna thanks her for the phone and says they’ll meet soon. She hangs up and turns the phone off. Tae Eul calls the phone but it’s off. Tae Eul murmurs that Luna is there for her. She grouses that Luna’s voice was exactly like hers.

Lee Gon asks Jo Young how he’s been. Jo Young confirms he’s well. Lee Gon asks if Jo Young ran into Prime Minister Goo. That surprises Jo Young. Lee Gon reveals Prime Minister Goo has the same scar on her neck that he has on his shoulder. Lee Gon assures Jo Young that he can handle Prime Minister Goo so that she’s tied down and limited.

Chairman Choe’s emissary visits Lee Gon to inform him of the decision. He states CC allegiance is to his company. He’s funded Prime Minister Goo well. The emissary gives Lee Gon a portable USB drive that supports treason against Prime Minister Goo from inside her home. He warns Lee Gon to increase the security in the palace as Prime Minister Goo recorded conversations with Lee Gon. Sighing Lee Gon says he didn’t know Prime Minister Goo as well as he thought.

The recording of Prime Minister Goo asking her husband to track down the traitors but not link her, is made public. Prime Minister Goo’s mother faints when she hears her daughter’s words.

Prime Minister Goo isn’t happy to say the least. Party leaders arrive to relieve her of duty. Prime Minister Goo wants to know who did this – her ex-husband, the palace or the party. Knowing it is a losing battle, Prime Minister Goo declares she’ll leave everything except for she puts on the Korean purchased shoes and leaves others behind. She asks her ex-husbands emissary and her advisor if he’s coming with her. He replies he supports whoever the Prime Minister is. Prime Minister Goo laughs and calls him disloyal. She asks who went through her home. He tells her she made the mess; she has to clean it up. She reminds him no one has ever kept her down, she always rises. Her secretary agrees to leave with her.

What’s the deal with those shoes? She deserved that…and so much more!

Republic of Korea…

Lee Gon tells Jo Young that Prime Minister Goo breeched palace security. Lee Gon shares that Tae Eul put a tracking app on his phone. Lee Gon asks if Eun Sub’s siblings found him out. Jo Young lies and says no.

Myung Na Ri (Kim Yong Ji) tells his young sister her brother is acting odd. The little girl says that’s not her brother. But when Eun Sub appears, his young siblings rush into his arms. Na Ri is confused by the change. Eun Sub and his siblings walk to her. The sister exclaims this is her brother. Eun Sub smiles. Na Ri believes it too, this is Eun Sub. Sensing a reaction from her, Eun Sub guesses she missed him then pulls her into a huge hug declaring he missed her too. LOL! Na Ri notes they saw each other yesterday. The young sister notes they are watching. Eun Sub declares the reason he’d never trade places are right here. They all hug each other.

Sweet!

Tae Eul learns the service was cancelled on her phone. She leaves to get a new one.

Luna has a bad reaction to drugs. She stares at the stars she’s arranged in the same pattern on her ceiling as Tae Eul.

Eun Sub is disappointed when Lee Gon visits. But when Lee Gon gives him a slick sports car, Eun Sub is thrilled. Lee Gon thanks him for his service. Lee Gon puts on his shades and strides away. Eun Sub marvels at the cool vibe Lee Gon always has.

Tae Eul is startled to find Lee Gon at the breakfast table with her father when she exits her room to go to work. Her father tells her to leave if she must. He notices she’s blushing. He asks if she has a boyfriend. Tae Eul declares Lee Gon is her boyfriend. Both Lee Gon and her father are surprised. Lee Gon rises and admits he’d wanted to do this in another way, but Tae Eul is the woman he cares for. He introduces himself as Lee Gon. Both men bow. They all enjoy breakfast. Tae Eul’s father ask who Lee Gon really is. Tae Eul declares he’s a decent guy. Lee Gon and Tae Eul smile at each other.

After breakfast, Lee Gon and Tae Eul exit the house. Lee Gon muses that Tae Eul’s father knows that she’s dating a guy with no identity. Lee Gon says he should return. Tae Eul asks if he has to leave now. Lee Gon wonders if he should stay just for the day. Tae Eul smiles and says she’ll see him after work. She gets a bag from her car and gives it to him. She admits she purchased a while back and she doesn’t want to use it to stop him from leaving when he must. She says it is plain and dark so he won’t be noticed. Lee Gon retorts he’s always noticed no matter what. He pulls out a dark jacket with a hoody.

OMG! That’s the jacket the masked man that saved a young Lee Gon 25 years ago wore! Did Lee Gon save himself from Lee Rim?

Lee Gon muses that he feels like he’s seen the jacket before. Tae Eul says that’s exactly what she intended, a common piece of clothing. She tells him to wear it that evening.

At the police station, Shin Jae sees Tae Eul enter. She asks him to help her. He asks if she wants to look for her counterpart. Tae Eul says there’s something more pressing than that.

Tae Eul and Shin Jae knock but Koo Eun A (Prime Minister Goo’s Korean counterpart) doesn’t answer. Tae Eul is sure Prime Minister Goo visited Eun A when she came to Korea. Detective Jang calls Tae Eul and reports Eun A was reported missing today. Shin Jae gets a call then a text with a photo of picture of the man who matched the fingerprints on the flip phone. He states this man worked at the care center. Recall that’s the care center where Lee Seong Jae, died in 1995. Tae Eul says that care center is where Lee Rim’s Korean counterpart, Lee Seong Jae died. Tae Eul believes if Lee Rim brought Prime Minister Goo to Korea, then Eun A is dead not missing. She believes Prime Minister Goo is at the care center.

At the care center the administrator denies recognizing Eun A’s photo. The administrator asks for a warrant. Shin Jae walks up and notes care centers that require warrant for certain rooms are suspect. The administrator stares at Shin Jae. Tae Eul notices. Shin Jae plucks the master key from the administrator and tells Tae Eul to follow. They walk away. The administrator looks anxious.

Jo Young recalls the elevator ride with Song Jeong Hye. Lee Gon asks if Jo Young has anything to pack. Jo Young says not. Lee Gon pulls out the black jacket Tae Eul gave him. He smiles as he explains this jacket makes him blend in per Tae Eul. Jo Young asks if Lee Gon would like to have a drink with him. Lee Gon asks what’s on his mind. Jo Young claims he needs to purchase some soju. He leaves.

Lee Gon looks at Shin Jae’s contact on his phone. He recalls Shin Jae’s mother in Corea, Ms. Park, begging to protection for her son. He calls Shin Jae but he doesn’t answer. Lee Gon puts on the jacket and hat. He murmurs everything is black.

OMG!! Confirmed this is the outfit the masked man wore that saved a young Lee Gon!!!

The doorbell rings. Lee Gon smiles when he opens the door and finds Tae Eul. She holds up a bag and asks if she can come in.

Shin Jae continues to search at the care center.

Isn’t it odd he’s doing this without Tae Eul?

He finds a room that requires the master key. He enters.

Tae Eul visits the morgue and sees Eun A’s body.

Wait a minute, who is with Lee Gon? Luna?

Kingdom of Corea…

Lee Rim stares at a sign from the relics exhibit.

Republic of Korea…

Luna pretends she’s Tae Eul. She talks about how hard it is to grow a magic lily. She says it represents hopeless love. Lee Gon knows. Tae Eul asks why he’s looking at her like that. Lee Gon admits he assumed he wouldn’t be fooled, but he was. He says her face is his weakness. Tae Eul asks what he means. Lee Gon says she look anxious, something Tae Eul never is. He says she’s not Tae Eul. He pulls the badge from Luna’s coat pocket. It is the badge with the Nov 11 picture. Lee Gon says she must be Luna.

Flashback…the masked man attacks Lee Rim’s men on the night his father was killed by Lee Rim.

Lee Gon is shocked. He gets it. He’s the masked man. He had Tae Eul’s badge that his younger self grabbed when he saved him. Lee Gon murmurs “so that’s how it happened”.

Kingdom of Corea…

Lee Rim stares at the sign with Lee Gon’s face for the exhibit. He remembers the masked man was tall.

Republic of Korea…

Lee Gon remembers the masked man was skilled with a gun. The masked man knew the structure’s details.

Kingdom of Corea…

Lee Rim remembers the masked man knew who his enemy was.

Republic of Korea…

Lee Gon remembers the masked man fought Lee Rim’s assassins with everything he had. Lee Gon murmurs “the one that saved me…”

Kingdom of Corea…

Lee Rim says “the one who saved you was yourself.”

Republic of Korea…

Lee Gon murmurs “it was me.” Lee Gon says “so that’s how everything comes together”.  The drug that Luna put in his drink takes effect. He falls into the chair. He remembers falling to the ground when Lee Rim choked him. Lee Gon falls to the floor.

Flashback…the masked man kneels next to the injured young Lee Gon. His face comes in focus…it’s Lee Gon!

My Thoughts

Lee Gon is the masked man. Writer Kim Eun Sook didn’t make the reveal of the masked man murky. It was utterly clear, Lee Gon time traveled to save his younger self from Lee Rim. The interesting aspect of the reveal was Lee Rim’s realization at the same time. A drugged Lee Gon fell to the floor. What’s next? With only one episode this week, we’ll have to wait until next week to find out. Per Netflix episode 14 will air June 5, episode 15 will air June 6, and episode 16 will air June 12. Other than the end big reveal of the masked man, this episode was a slow build to the mask man reveal with other pieces of the puzzle falling into place and new puzzle pieces revealed. Do you feel like a detective when you watch this show as you try and assimilate the clues and extrapolate the answers to the looming questions?

King Lee Gon (Lee Min Ho) realized he saved his younger self.  I didn’t see that coming. I thought Shin Jae was the masked man, but no, Writer Kim gave a more satisfying answer. Lee Gon has discussed time travel not just traveling between worlds. The in between world seems to be the point where such time travel will occur. I assume Lee Rim already knows this as he and his minions traveled back in time to take the magic flute and kill Lee Gon’s father. But if Lee Rim can time travel, why didn’t he eliminate Lee Gon before he became the worthy opponent he is today?  Let’s not forget we learned Lee Gon’s grandfather King Hyeong traveled to Korea to bring Court Lady Noh to Corea. Is time travelling between the worlds stand operating procedure for royalty? Writer Kim is banging the drum often that our couple cannot be together forever. Can Lee Gon find a way or are permanently separated lovers this couple’s fate?

Detective Jung Tae Eul (Kim Go Eun) wasn’t happy to learn Luna had lived her life. Shin Jae’s reaction immediately clued Tae Eul that Luna had interacted with him. But Luna turned off the phone and dodged Tae Eul. Luna had the best episode yet. She fed the cat. She groaned at the Gemini constellation on Tae Eul’s ceiling. That constellation pictorially represents the twins Castor and Pollux sitting together. Are Luna and Tae Eul twins and NOT counterparts? Why would that make a difference? It appeared that Luna put the same constellation on the ceiling where she stayed and did a dry run of the drugs she administered to Lee Gon. Poor Lee Gon with all the care about someone else tasting his food, Luna got him when she drugged Lee Gon’s beer. The big question is – what is Luna’s game? Is she being directed by Lee Rim? Is she rogue? Tae Eul asked Lee Gon the right question, can the lengthening time stops be neutralized?

Jo Young / Eun Sub (Woo Do Hwan) watched Song Jeong Hye and is sure Tae Eul is not Lee Gon’s forever partner. He watched and followed Song Jeong Hye. Jo Young concerns me a bit. He told Shin Jae that Tae Eul and Lee Gon won’t be together at the end of this. I’m concerned that Jo Young’s beliefs and subsequent actions may alter things. He is Lee Gon’s unbreakable sword. Does Jo Young believe he knows what is best for Lee Gon and will act to make it so? I wish he’d confide his concerns with Lee Gon. He must know that Lee Gon’s brain is better than his and can create solutions where none appear to exist. Eun Sub’s return to Korea was charming.

Prince Geum Lee Rim (Lee Jung Jin) (Lee Gon’s uncle) realized Lee Gon saved himself. Lee Rim flashed to the knowledge at the same time Lee Gon did. This is an interesting moment. Lee Rim time traveled to get the magic flute. Can he time travel again to eliminate Lee Gon now that he knows Lee Gon is the masked man that thwarted him 25 years ago? What did he tell Luna to do? What was the significance of the car outside Luna’s apartment? I’m assuming she took the drugs as a test run but did Lee Rim’s men inject them? Lee Rim is assumed to have taken Prime Minister Goo to Korea and had her murder Eun A. He must have promised her the power she craves. She lost that power. Will she demand Lee Rim help her? What’s the deal with the shoes she bought in Korea? Are they her Dorothy click the heels and she’s back in Korea shoes?

Detective Gang Shin Jae (Kim Kyung Nam) was kissed by Luna. Back to the care center Tae Eul and Shin Jae went to search. She believed Prime Minister Goo was there. But I’m wondering if Shin Jae’s counterpart still in a coma and now an adult is in the room. Could it be the presumed dead Corea counterpart, Kang Hyeon Min? We shall see.

The twelfth song of the OST is “Quiet Night” sung by Hawnag Chi Yeul. The video is a nice compilation of moments our couple have shared.

I rank this episode as almost terrific, 8.5 on a 10-point scale.

Thanks for the quick recap. Things are happening at a rapid pace as we near the end. I think it will be hard to wrap this story up in any logical way with the addition of time travel at this late stage, but I am keeping faith with the writer that she has a plan! My only comment to your analysis is that I didn’t think Luna had taken drugs, but rather was displaying symptoms of the terminal illness she has. I am very worried about the drug (hopefully not poison) she gave to Lee Gon.

I’d forgotten that she has a terminal illness! I agree with your assessment.

I am very worried about the drug (hopefully not poison) she gave to Lee Gon.
I hope it isn’t poison too. I’m assuming she’s under orders by Lee Rim to drug him.

I’m also hoping Luna 🐇🌙 did not poison ☠ Gon 🤴🐴. I worry because all the flashbacks Gon 🤴🐴 had that involved his Korean doppleganger, Ji Hun 🤾‍♂️ and the rescue of his younger self.

Luna’s 🐇🌙 already been rebellious towards Rim 🎨🦯, here’s hoping she continues.

I agree. When responding to DD’s comment below I wondered if Luna is working to save Lee Gon because she’s Tae Eul’s twin. She seems apathetic most of the time. I do not have a handle on this character.

The pieces of the puzzle are finally clicking into place! I am also thinking that Luna may be Tae Eul’s actual twin, not a counterpart. We will see in the next 2 weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed for a satisfying ending.

It is an interesting twist though I don’t understand the significance if they are twins. I’d love to see a satisfying ending…and that doesn’t necessarily mean a happily ever after. I want to be satisfied with Writer Kim’s choices at the end of the final episode.

Thank you for writing clear, straightforward recaps, KJT.

    KJT ~~DD
Lady Noh identifies Lee Gon’s grandfather, King Haejong, as the man that brought her to this world
~~who else? why? what is the criteria? are they all players in this parallel universe crisis? I am thinking that the burning cracks are only showing in people whose doppleganger is dead, although we don’t know the Lady Noh story.

Prime Minister Goo counters that she started with nothing and he started with everything.
~~Lee Gon’s (LMH) reaction to this comment was good acting – one quick look that says “I had no idea that this was your motivation”. I am appreciating LMH in this role in unexpected ways.

Tae Eul walks the palace hallway and thinks of Court Lady Noh stating when a young Lee Gon grabbed her police ID, she became his guiding light and to support him well.
~~So Lady Noh is expecting Tae Eul to stay, is modeling it’s possibility – and giving her the responsibility, almost like a duty.

A heavily pregnant Park Ji Young (the Korean version) mentally reviews everyone she’s supposed to know.
~~Who is this baby’s father? Who is Park Ji Youngs husband? She must be royal bloodline, otherwise why would she be important to Lee Rim. I’m confused. LOL.

~~Shin Jae just breaks my heart. He’s alone, he has a one-sided love, he knows he’s living in the wrong world. Lee Rim said he might have made a mistake bringing Shin Jae. And…Is the cat a doppleganger? 😉 We know there is only one Maximus, even if we are confused about the gender.

What’s the deal with those shoes? She deserved that…and so much more!
~~Silent signal to Lee Rim, baby I’m yours, put me back in power? (Side note – jeesh the things women will do to their feet (and backs) to “look good”.

He notices she’s blushing. (Dad asks if she has a boyfriend.)
~~As the intimate banter before they retired the night before indicates, her skin flush is the well known afterglow of making love. I think this aspect of their relationship is being handled so sweetly and respectfully. We know it is there, but it is up to each of us to fill in the blanks according to our own ideals. The banter is adorable.

The drug that Luna put in his drink takes effect.
~~Things we know about Luna: She has a terminal (disease?) – but I remember someone said she could get an organ transplant? She doesn’t really care about money for herself or her lifestyle would be different. She takes care of a cat and a little boy. She acted like a criminal and had loan sharks chasing her in Corea. This drugging incident could go either way….

I’m concerned that Jo Young’s beliefs and subsequent actions may alter things.
~~I agree! There are too many wild cards in this game to predict anything except the defeat of Lee Rim, because even if our OTP can never be together Lee Rim has got to DIE.

~~Honestly, fellow watchers – there are too many questions, I can’t see how they are all going to get answered in the context of the dramas remaining hours. We may be left to wonder what the writer meant and have to make up our own stories.

This drama has me more engaged than any since Money Flower. (Jang Hyuk, major bias… omo)

Looking forward to the beez and two janes observations.

    Cheers.
P.S. I am still having a little trouble figuring out how to be/stay connected to wordpress, so I have missed some comments but gone back later. Hope that is not messing up your flow.

Well said. LMH is a good actor.

So Lady Noh is expecting Tae Eul to stay, is modeling it’s possibility – and giving her the responsibility, almost like a duty.
Spot on with that assessment. I can’t see Tae Eul leaving her father in Korea, unless she can easily time travel or he is willing to come to Corea.

Who is this baby’s father? Who is Park Ji Youngs husband? She must be royal bloodline, otherwise why would she be important to Lee Rim.
I wondered if they’d kill the Corean counterpart but that seemed too cruel and they ended up switching places. I don’t understand the significance of this character yet.

Shin Jae just breaks my heart. He’s alone, he has a one-sided love, he knows he’s living in the wrong world. Lee Rim said he might have made a mistake bringing Shin Jae
Writer Kim gave him a couple of terrific episodes and that’s where I fell for this character. He must have a pivotal role in the end. I’ve got a guess and in 3 episodes I’ll know if I’m right.

Things we know about Luna: She has a terminal (disease?)…This drugging incident could go either way
Yes, I’d forgotten about the disease and assumed she test drove the drug she gave Lee Gon, which is wrong. Is she really working for Lee Rim? Is she working to save Lee Gon because she’s Tae Eul’s twin?

There are too many wild cards in this game to predict anything except the defeat of Lee Rim, because even if our OTP can never be together Lee Rim has got to DIE.
No prison could hold him, limbo in another world wouldn’t satisfy, death is the option that seems best.

Appreciate the comments. I’m fully engaged in this series too. Money Flower was one of my favorite series for Jang Hyuk. I was riveted.

Is she (Luna) working to save Lee Gon because she’s Tae Eul’s twin?
~~I am not following how the twin possibility came up.

Money Flower was one of my favorite series for Jang Hyuk. I was riveted.
~~ The most Intense actor. I can’t watch everything he is in, Chuno comes to mind, but whatever he does is riveting. (and he is so HOT 😉 ) Please Teach Me English, and Windstruck – my favorite is the goofy guy in Fated to Love You.

I think King Haejong brought Court Lady Noh Ok Nam 🎎 to give an orphaned girl, Noh Ok Nam 🎎, yo have a better life than in war torn Korea. I tend to believe King Haejong was being ultruistic, unlike Rim 🎨🦯 and his hegemonist schemes. I wondered if Gon’s father had any awareness of parallel worlds … my guess is that he did not. How did Rim 🎨🦯 discover the powers of the manpasikjeok or even hear about it❓⁉️

Gon 🤴🐴 theorized that the lightning scars, or burning cracks as DD calls them, appeared on those that killed their doppleganger in the other world … that theory works EXCEPT for Gon 🤴🐴 … he did not kill his doppleganger Ji Hun 🤾‍♂️. Unless his time travel to rescue himself did something to cause the death of Ji Hun 🤾‍♂️ … it just doesn’t seem logical and logic must exist in my sci-fi world … Mr Spock ask Scotty to beam me up from this illogical scenario.

KJT, I’m with you on thinking that Tae Eul 🔫🕵️‍♀️ will not leave her dad behind in Korea.

I thought Park Ji Young🤰 might have been Rim’s 🎨🦯 stepping stone to get influence over Seo Ryung 💄🐝, but that ship has sailed. What was up with Seo Ryung 💄🐝 admonishing Park Ji Young 🤰 to give birth the the Kingdom of Corea last episode❓⁉️ Seo Ryung 💄🐝 must have known Park Ji Young 🤰 was on Rim’s hit list, but the WHY still remains. Last episode we saw Park Ji Young’s 🤰 husband suffering from the lightning scar burn; he is a CEO with lots of assets, which I believe is Rim’s motivation to recruit his doppleganger. Is this Korean doppleganger, now CEO the father of Korean Park Ji Young’s🤰 baby❓⁉️ I was greatly relieved they didn’t kill mother and child.

“Is she [Luna 🐇🌙] working to save Lee Gon because she’s Tae Eul’s twin?” -DD I personally think it is more likely Luna🐇🌙 is Tae Eul’s🔫🕵️‍♀️ twin than a time traveling Tae Eul🔫🕵️‍♀️. The Gemini ♊ reference may insinuate twins, that they look like twins or simply that Gemini ♊ may be their astrological sign, but THIS WEEK I’m inclined to believe Luna 🐇🌙 is Tae Eul’s🔫🕵️‍♀️ Corean doppleganger. While Luna 🐇🌙 is a criminal, I believe she is a good person, evidenced by her looking out for yo-yo boy 💁‍♂️🪀 and small animals, like Luna the cat. Luna 🐇🌙 also asked Tae Eul’s 🔫🕵️‍♀️ dad if she, Tae Eul 🔫🕵️‍♀️, is a good daughter … I don’t think Luna 🐇🌙 wants to hurt good people … we are only aware of her stealing from bad people. My hope is that Luna 🐇🌙 will throw a wrench 🔧 in Rim’s 🎨🦯 works.

You can add me to the team rooting for Rim 🎨🦯 to die.

Lee Gon’s grandfather time traveling and Lee Gon’s father knowing nothing about it baffles me. It seems like the magic of the magic flute wasn’t well known by the last 2 generations of royals. Rim wanting an edge and power could have run across the knowledge in the books, an old wise person, etc. I would like Writer Kim to clarify.

that theory works EXCEPT for Gon 🤴🐴 … he did not kill his doppleganger Ji Hun 🤾‍♂️.
Agree. He did not directly murder his counterpart, indirectly doesn’t count IMO.

It’s too murky to know yet.

In the first episode Rim 🎨🦯 said the manpasikjeok appeared every 20 years, could that be the reason Gon’s dad wasn’t aware of it❓⁉️ It is also troubling that Rim has had possession of half of the manpasikjeok and using it for the last 25 years … is the manpasikjeok worn out❓⁉️

Agreed that there are several murky points that could use clarification.

I think (and HOPE) Luna 🐇🌙 used Rim 🎨🦯 to get a travel pass, but only moves to the beat of her own drum. Am I being too optimistic❓⁉️ She may not trust him to deliver his promises.

Now that’s a theory I can get behind. I think writer-nim flubbed up to have such a genius character as Lee Gon come up with that flawed theory when he knows he didn’t kill his Korean counterpart. Heck, even my slow brain instantly thought that as soon as he said it.

Seo Ryung 💄🐝 sided with Rim BEFORE it was announced that the King was engaged and yet she said that Gon 🤴🐴 is the one who decided where she would go in those heels 👠👠 … have you ever seen more HIDEOUS HEELS 👠 👠 … ever❓⁉️ Seo Ryung 💄🐝 WAS the one who traveled to Korea. Is the cinnamon 🌳 forest the location of Rim’s 🎨🦯 portal❓⁉️ Does anyone think cotton candy smells like cinnamon❓⁉️ … because I don’t think it does. Have any readers ever smelled a cinnamon 🌳 tree❓⁉️ If so, please describe.

I am also troubled by Jo Young 🎖🛡 … he seems to have omitted important information to Gon 🤴🐴: sightings of Rim 🎨🦯 in Corea, finding Song Jeong Hye 🐅🔒 (Ji Hun/Gon-K’s 🤾‍♂️ mom) and lied about Eun Sub’s 🧢 sister finding out he was not Eun Sub 🧢; I find Eun Sub 🧢 to be more charming (and goofy) than Young🎖🛡. Young 🎖🛡 doesn’t want Tae Eul 🔫🕵️‍♀️ with Gon 🤴🐴 … omitting one item could be understandable, but things keep adding up … does Young 🎖🛡 have his own agenda❓⁉️

In this episode Jeong Hye 🐅🔒 asked Shin Jae’s 🥋🤜💢, Ms Min something about the medical expenses for Shin Jae 🥋🤜💢. It sounds like the real Shin Jae was comatose for a year and then replaced with Hyeon Min, who we know as Shin Jae 🥋🤜💢. Shin Jae 🥋🤜💢 IS Kang Hyeon Min. When Shin Jae 🥋🤜💢 looked to the room on the care center did he find himself❓⁉️ If so, who is yo-yo boy💁‍♂️🪀❓⁉️ Why did Luna 🐇🌙 kiss Shin Jae … was it because she could tell he likes Tae Eul❓⁉️

Both Gon 🤴🐴 and Rim 🎨🦯 have come to the conclusion that time travel has happened. Both of them realizing time travel is possible is a HUGE WILD CARD 🃏. Will time travel worsen the freeze time problem❓⁉️

Gon 🤴🐴 being the masked gunman was confirmed … he was one of my candidates for the gunman since episode 2, although Shin Jae 🥋🤜💢 was a contender in my book too.

She’s a woman scorned. Those were ugly shoes. Yes, she traveled to Korea. I’m assuming Lee Rim escorted her. Not sure why she wasn’t arrested for treason. I did feel sorry for her mother too.

I believe he believes HE must save Lee Gon from himself. I’m worried this will hinder Lee Gon.

That’s what I’m wondering. Can you imagine the stunned shock of seeing yourself in a coma on a bed?

Why did Luna 🐇🌙 kiss Shin Jae … was it because she could tell he likes Tae Eul❓⁉️
I believe so, Luna is alone in the world. She’s naturally jealous of Tae Eul’s life – her father, her friend, her coworkers, and her romance with Lee Gon. That makes her dangerous, even though I hope she’s not working for Lee Rim, he brought her to Korea with the assignment to replace Tae Eul. She took his money and went on vacation initially but did move into Tae Eul’s house and learned what having a caring father was like.

Both of them realizing time travel is possible is a HUGE WILD CARD 🃏. Will time travel worsen the freeze time problem❓⁉️
Yes, Lee Rim committed treason, killed his brother, to steal the magic flute when he was moving between worlds NOT time traveling. Originally I thought Lee Rim time traveled to commit treason but that can’t be correct. It is dangerous that Lee Rim realized Lee Gon time traveled to save his younger self. But knowing it can be done isn’t the same as doing it. Of course the same goes for Lee Gon. He doesn’t know how to time travel…yet.

ai yi yi – it seems like there are more questions than ever, doesn’t there? How is this ever going to wrap up successfully? I am lighting candles and chanting that the writer will not fail us in the end of such of charming, intellectually stimulating show! I have so many questions and comments, and I join all of the previous posters in theirs. 2 more things I am wondering about: (1) how did they get Luna’s van to the Republic of Korea, or does she have a van to sleep in anywhere she goes?; and (2) won’t Jo Young return with the soju and save Lee Gon? or will he betray him? I mean, how is little Luna supposed to carry an unconscious Lee Gon out of there?

Oh, and yes Jang Hyuk rules!

Good questions. I’d hate to see Jo Young betray Lee Gon, but he could do so out of the misguided belief he must save his king, who he believes is on a path of self destruction.
