Tell Me What You Saw Episode 14 Recap

Tell Me What You Saw Episode 14 “Explosion”

Detective Cha Soo Young (Sooyoung) stops pressing on the neck of the now dead Senior Chief Choi Hyung Pil just strangled by the peppermint candy killer. She tells the arriving security guards to preserve the scene for the police who are enroute.

Detective Yang Man Soo, Detective Lee Ji Min, and Detective Jang Tae Sung are enroute when neither Team Lead Hwang or Detective Cha answer their cell phones.

Genius profiler Oh Hyun Jae (Jang Hyuk) and Team Lead Hwang pursue Dong Sik (the peppermint candy killer) in the woods. Detective Cha arrives and calls for them but there is no answer. Dong Sik scales a fence. Hyun Jae and Team Lead Hwang follow. The car with Detective Yang, Detective Lee and Detective Jang shines their headlights on Team Lead Hwang Ha Young (Jin Seo Yeon) who is forced to stop but only for a moment then she takes off. Detective Cha scales the fence and reports that the peppermint candy killer strangled Senior Chief Choi. She takes off. The three detectives follow. Then the police arrive and follow. Hyun Jae lines up a shot and takes it. Everyone hears it. He wings Dong Sik. Hyun Jae fires in the air twice to alert the team to his location. When the police arrive, Hyun Jae claims he lost the peppermint candy killer. Everyone arrives to see Hyun Jae walk away stating he lost the peppermint candy killer. Dong Sik grabs his shoulder. He looks at the handcuffs he took from the medical examiner’s office. He murmurs that special objects bond him to Hyun Jae.

Good intro. Hyun Jae knows he winged the peppermint candy killer but no one else does.

Cue Intro…

The team looks at Senior Chief Choi’s dead body. Detective Yang puts the sheet over his face. Detective Lee watches the man that helped him and forced him to be a mole go by. He cries.

Team Lead Hwang watches Hyun Jae’s encounter with the peppermint candy killer at the medical examiner’s office via CCTV. When the critical moment in the encounter comes, she orders the reluctant video operator to leave the room. She sees the peppermint candy killer unmask himself. She believes Hyun Jae saw the peppermint candy killer’s face. She’s not happy. She storms out.

I don’t think from that angle Hyun Jae had a clear face view.

Hyun Jae holds Dong Sik’s doll. He murmurs show me your next move.

Kang Dong Sik treats his wound.

Medical Examiner Han examines Senior Chief Choi’s body. His initial take is that the peppermint candy killer killed him. Detective Yang is surprised. Detective Cha isn’t.

Detective Yang and Detective Cha ask to see the CCTV from the medical examiner’s office. The video operator declares the police took everything yesterday. He complains pointing to the trashed equipment. Detective Yang asks who it was. A female RIU Team Lead is the response.

Team Lead Hwang doesn’t understand why Hyun Jae isn’t sharing that he saw the peppermint candy killer’s face. She receives a box. Inside it is a voice recorder. She presses play. Team Lead Hwang hears herself tell the peppermint candy killer that Han Yi Soo (Hyun Jae’s fiancée and her best friend) is the person that must die. Team Lead Hwang throws the recorder on the ground.

I can’t imagine the tension she’s living under.

Team Lead Hwang reports to Chief Park (Senior Chief Choi’s boss) that Senior Chief Choi was killed by the peppermint candy killer because he went rouge. She gives the hard drive with the CCTV footage she took. Team Lead Hwang states on Senior Chief Choi and Hyun Jae have seen the peppermint candy killer’s face. She declares Hyun Jae will reveal everything when he’s ready. That’s the last thing Chief Park wants as his part in the coverup (peppermint candy killer claimed to be dead when he wasn’t) will be exposed. She vows to kill the peppermint candy killer before Hyun Jae can reveal what he knows. Chief Park is taken aback. Team Lead Hwang vows to coverup the mess.  Chief Park asks what she wants. She starts to walk away. Chief Park says if she’s successful she’ll have Senior Chief Choi’s job.

Team Lead Hwang strides through the bullpen into her office. Detective Yang demands to know where the CCTV footage is. She snaps that Detective Yang isn’t her boss. Detective Yang asks why she’s out for blood. Detective Yang stares at him and strides away. Detective Cha follows. She says Hyun Jae can’t be found. Detective Cha snaps that Detective Cha needs to man up and stop whining. She strides away.

Dong Sik and Hyun Jae pass each other in the hallway of the police station. Hyun Jae calls him Kim Yo Han (Dong Sik’s birth name). Hyun Jae says this is where Dong Sik feel safe. Dong Sik agrees the police always protect him, 5 years ago and now. Dong Sik declares he was never caught because of personal greed inside the police force. Dong Sik declares Hyun Jae would claim to be different, but he’s not. He chuckles stating this is the one place, Hyun Jae cannot catch him. Why? Because Hyun Jae wants to know who ordered Yi Soo killed more than he wants him caught. Dong Sik wonders what he would have done to the person that supplied Yi Soo’s name. Hyun Jae counters that Dong Sik’s chattiness indicates he’s scared. Hyun Jae warns him that someone else is hunting him and could catch him first. Dong Sik chuckles and counters that Hyun Jae is more concerned Hyun Jae won’t get what he wants before he’s caught. Finally, Hyun Jae turns and looks at Dong Sik.

Terrific scene. Producer Director Kim Sang Hoon knows how to construct the scene and let the tension build.

T
eam Lead Hwang walks into the hallway as Hyun Jae and Dong Sik draw apart. She tells Hyun Jae he’s under arrest for murdering Senior Chief Choi. Dong Sik watches Team Lead Hwang put handcuffs on Hyun Jae. Dong Sik walks away. Detective Cha enters the hallway and sees Team Lead Hwang putting handcuffs on Hyun Jae. Her eyes widen in surprise.

That’s a bold move Team Lead Hwang.

Senior Chief Choi greets the press and reports that Senior Chief Choi was killed by an unidentified man last night. She vows the police will catch the killer. A reporter asks if Hyun Jae’s arrest is in conjunction with Senior Chief Choi’s death. Team Lead Hwang states she can’t comment on an ongoing investigation. She states the press conference is over.  She ignores the other questions shouted at her. The team follows out.

In the bullpen, Team Lead Hwang declares that if the press learn Hyun Jae was arrested, it will be a mess. She orders them to keep quiet. She orders Detective Lee to post guards at Hyun Jae’s interrogation room.  She goes into her office. Detective Cha follows and demands to know why Hyun Jae has been arrested. She asks about the CCTV footage and why Team Lead Hwang took it. Team Lead Hwang orders her out of the office. Detective Cha declares the medical examiner believes the peppermint candy killer killed Senior Chief Choi. Team Lead Hwang suggests Hyun Jae could be the peppermint candy killer. Detective Cha can’t believe it. Team Lead Hwang declares she’s going to find out. She strides past Detective Cha.

That’s a bold claim Team Lead Hwang. Coverup indeed.

The team doesn’t understand why Team Lead Hwang is being like this. Detective Yang wonders if Hyun Jae killed Senior Chief Choi.

Detective Lee finds Team Lead Hwang on the rooftop. He gives her the list of the 6 police officer that took the day off on November 29 (the day she was abducted by the peppermint candy killer). Dong Sik’s name is on the list. Team Lead Hwang orders Detective Lee they must talk to all of them but keep the real reason for the questions hidden. Detective Lee asks why she arrested Hyun Jae. Team Lead Hwang tells him to do as she says and not ask questions.

That’s counter to her previous advice to be the detective he wants to be. How quickly Team Lead Hwang has morphed into Senior Chief Choi. She has a secret she’s desperate to stay hidden just like Senior Chief Choi.

Team Lead Hwang interrogates Hyun Jae. He asks why Senior Chief Choi blocked him from finding out who the peppermint candy killer was. Hyun Jae states Senior Chief Choi provided a body 5 years ago at the accident site that declared the peppermint candy killer even though it wasn’t. Hyun Jae states Senior Chief Choi hid the handcuffs which was the evidence that could identify the peppermint candy killer. Team Lead Hwang asks him what the point of this is. Hyun Jae tells Team Lead Hwang that he understands someone’s mindset when he analyzes their choices. Hyun Jae says that applies to her too. He states she teamed up with Senior Chief Choi. He points out she choose to shoot copycat killer Shin Gyeong Su which put him in a coma. Then she spirited copycat killer Shin Gyeong Su out of the hospital when he woke from the coma. Hyun Jae asks why she arrested him when she knows he didn’t kill Senior Chief Choi. Hyun Jae concludes Team Lead Hwang doesn’t want him to get the peppermint candy killer. Team Lead Hwang is miffed that Hyun Jae profiled her. Hyun Jae asks what she’s hiding. Team Lead Hwang yells that Hyun Jae saw his face but didn’t tell her. Hyun Jae let the peppermint candy killer go that night in the woods. She points out he’s acting for his personal gain not the police. Hyun Jae takes off his engagement ring and states he wants one thing…the person that ordered Yi Soo killed. They stare into each other’s eyes. Team Lead Hwang leaves the room.

Terrific scene! You can’t hide from Hyun Jae’s profiling eyes.

On the rooftop Detective Yang and Detective Lee discuss how Team Lead Hwang has replaced Senior Chief Choi for Detective Lee. Detective Yang admits that it takes a team and each one of them as strengths the others don’t have. A team what is needed to catch criminals and specifically the peppermint candy killer.

Dong Sik finds the bullpen empty. He checks Detective Lee’s computer. He quickly stands when Detective Cha enters. Detective Cha asks for Dong Sik’s help to talk to Hyun Jae. He doesn’t want to. She points out Hyun Jae needs her trust. Dong Sik sighs.

Dong Sik relieves the officer guarding Hyun Jae.  Detective Cha notices the blood stain on the shoulder of his shirt before she enters the room.  Detective Cha takes the earbuds from the basket of his belongs behind the two-way glass. She enters the room and tells Hyun Jae she believes in him. She admits she has low self-esteem. She’s wanted to believe she could be a good officer. Hyun Jae believed in her so she believes in him. She gives him the earbuds and vows to help him.

Team Lead Hwang and Detective Lee enter the secret investigation room. She tells him to get Dong Sik. Team Lead Hwang tells herself she’ll find the peppermint candy killer first.

Dong Sik switches out of his uniform and sees the blood stain on the shoulder of his shirt. He realizes Detective Cha saw it. Detective Yang startles him. Detective Yang puts something in his locker and asks if Dong Sik will return to him home town. Dong Sik confirms this. Detective Yang suggests that things took a nose dive once Dong Sik appeared. They both pretend laugh it off. Detective Lee appears and declares Team Lead Hwang wants to talk with him. Dong Sik leaves with Detective Lee.

Detective Cha appears and Detective Yang takes her to the other side of the secret investigation room. He starts the computer. He sees Team Lead Hwang waiting. He remembers Detective Lee confirming that Team Lead Hwang is determined to get the peppermint candy killer first even to the point of locking up Hyun Jae. Detective Yang believes there’s something unacceptable happening with Team Lead Hwang. Detective Lee assures him he’ll watch Team Lead Hwang. Detective Yang says it’s time to find out Team Lead Hwang’s motive.  They see Dong Sik sit down. Detective Yang shows Detective Cha the list of 6 officers that took November 29 off. Detective Cha puts in her earbud. Detective Yang tells her to do what she needs to do. She openly tells Hyun Jae that Team Lead Hwang is talking to all the officers that took off on that day she went missing. Hyun Jae wants to know why Team Lead Hwang went missing. Detective Yang says Team Lead Hwang returned exhausted and never explained.

Loving Detective Yang!

Dong Sik asks why Team Lead Hwang wants to speak with him here. Team Lead Hwang claims she needs privacy. Hyun Jae directs Detective Cha to watch the facial expressions closely. Dong Sik says he feels like he is being investigated. Team Lead Hwang rubs her forehead and neck. Hyun Jae knows this is a sign of stress and anxiety. Team Lead Hwang asks why Dong Sik has never transferred. Dong Sik admits the simple case load is preferred. She asks him what he did on March 12 when he was off. He claims he was home sick. Hyun Jae imagines himself in the room. He sees Team Lead Hwang’s unconscious gestures that reveal she’s afraid of Dong Sik. Hyun Jae tells Detective Cha that Team Lead Hwang is afraid of the idea that Dong Sik could be the peppermint candy killer. Hyun Jae says Team Lead Hwang is afraid of the peppermint candy killer. He tells her it is time to go. Detective Cha protests. Hyun Jae reminds her she came to him for direction. Now its time to follow. Detective Cha leaves. Detective Yang stays.

Flashback…Hyun Jae tells Detective Cha he needs to stay to find out Team Lead Hwang’s agenda. He tells her to work with Detective Yang who knows Team Lead Hwang well. Detective Cha asks what he would have done if she hadn’t offer to help him. Hyun Jae says he believed that she would come to him.

Detective Cha enters the RIU bullpen.  She looks up information on Lee Ji Seon (other woman held captive with Team Lead Hwang by the peppermint candy killer, though they don’t know this). Hyun Jae tells Detective Cha there is a connection. Detective Cha finds the name of the memorial building. She remembers seeing s receipt on Team Lead Hwang’s trash can with the memorial building. Hyun Jae tells her to investigate.

Detective Yang wonders why Team Lead Hwang is afraid of the peppermint candy killer.

The memorial work tells Detective Cha Team Lead Hwang comes every year for the past 5 years. She visits Lee Ji Seon memorial. She reports Team Lead Hwang’s details to Hyun Jae. He pauses for a moment. Then he says Lee Ji Seon was the peppermint candy killer’s 11th victim. She disappeared on November 29 though her death was likely December 1. Detective Cha recalls Detective Yang stating Team Lead Hwang went missing on November 29. Hyun Jae realizes that Team Lead Hwang didn’t reveal that Lee Ji Seon died on November 29. He knows this leads to the secret Team Lead Hwang doesn’t want revealed. Detective Cha recalls Team Lead Hwang shooting copycat killer Shin Gyeong Su just as he was about to reveal who told him to kill Yi Soo. Detective Cha shakes her head no. She remembers Team Lead Hwang saying she has to get even with the peppermint candy killer. She remembers Team Lead Hwang saying the accident changed everything including her relationship with Hyun Jae and that she feels like she’s still in the fire. Hyun Jae murmurs that it was Team Lead Hwang’s name that would be revealed. He puts on his engagement ring. He says he’s going to get Team Lead Hwang. He cuts off transmission just as Detective Cha puts the pieces together. We see Detective Cha removed Hyun Jae’s handcuffs before she left the interrogation room. Detective Cha calls Detective Yang and declares they have to stop Hyun Jae. Detective Yang counters that Hyun Jae is in the interrogation room. Detective Cha declares details later, action now.  Detective Yang exits the room.

Team Lead Hwang finishes her conversation with Dong Sik. He stands to go. She stops him. He smiles and turns. She asks about what he did on November 29 when he took a day off. Dong Sik claims he is bad with details like that. He asks her to repeat the date. Team Lead Hwang repeats the date. Dong Sik repeats the date multiple times. Team Lead Hwang’s agitation increases.

Detective Yang finds that Hyun Jae is missing. He yells at the officer.

Dong Sik says he was with his longtime friend.

Outside, Detective Cha sees kids playing with a gun and hears the pop. She recalls the different tenors of Hyun Jae’s gun shots the night he pursued the peppermint candy killer. She recalls the blood stain on the shoulder of Dong Sik’s shirt.

Dong Sik tells Team Lead Hwang she knows this friend too. Team Lead Hwang is surprised. Dong Sik says Team Lead Hwang shot him in the head. Team Lead Hwang starts to lose it. She remembers spitting out the peppermint candy when she was held captive. Dong Sik says his friend was Shin Gyeong Su. He removes wire to strangle her. Team Lead Hwang remembers the peppermint candy killer strangling her.

Detective Cha shakes her head and declares it can’t be him.

Team Lead Hwang is in a haze of past memories and terror. Dong Sik walks behind her and starts to strangle her. He orders her to says what she said years ago. Team Lead Hwang recalls that day. Dong Sik releases her. He says he won’t kill her today because 5 years ago she said the name he wanted to hear. Dong Sik says she must attend the grand party he’s prepared for them all. He caresses Team Lead Hwang’s face. Dong Sik promises to send invitations. Team Lead Hwang is frozen with fear. Dong Sik strokes her hair and walks away.

Wow, that was effectively creepy!

Detective Cha shakes her head and declares it can’t be him.

Team Lead Hwang gasps for air and control.

Detective Cha wonders who she should talk to. She can’t tell Hyun Jae.

Team Lead Hwang tries to stand. She says Kang Dang Sik.

Detective Cha tries to call Detective Yang. He doesn’t answer.

Team Lead Hwang murmurs Dong Sik is the peppermint candy killer and she must catch him.

Detective Cha calls Detective Yang again. Dong Sik answers and says Detective Yang is busy. He asks why she is calling. We see he’s strangling Detective Yang. Detective Cha asks if Dong Sik was in the forest that night. He confirms it. Detective Cha asks if he’s the peppermint candy killer. Dong Sik cheerfully confirms he’s the peppermint candy killer. He drags Detective Yang to the edge. He says she’ll see Detective Yang soon. Dong Sik promises to make it quick. He finishes strangling Detective Yang. Detective Cha is beside herself with impending doom. Dong Sik sighs in relief when Detective Yang is dead. He tells Detective Cha to look up. He tosses Detective Yang from high up the stairs. Dong Sik says this is the invitation. Team Lead Hwang stands at the top of the stairs having seen Detective Yang fall and splat on the concrete floor of the lobby.

My Thoughts

The peppermint candy killer, Dong Sik, reveals himself to Hyun Jae, Team Lead Hwang and Detective Cha in different ways. Writers Ko Young Jae and Han Ki Hyun had Dong Sik reveal his identity in three distinct moments. He was cocky with Hyun Jae. He continued his mental torture of Team Lead Hwang. He told Detective Cha while he was strangling Detective Yang. The invitation to the grand party has been issued by Dong Sik. It’s time for him to pay. Writers Ko and Han penned an episode that was tight and full of moments that mattered. My hats off to Producer Director Kim Sang Hoon who knows how to construct a scene and let the tension build. There were standout moments throughout this episode as it built to the culmination point. Two episodes to go. Dong Sik must die, nothing else will satisfy.

Genius profiler Oh Hyun Jae (Jang Hyuk) realized Dong Sik was the peppermint candy killer. Hyun Jae’s hallway conversation with Dong Sik was a standout moment. Hyun Jae’s interrogation by Team Lead Hwang was a standout moment. Hyun Jae waited for Team Lead Hwang to reveal her secret. And he put the pieces of the puzzle together. He knows Team Lead Hwang said Yi Soo’s name when Dong Sik asks who to kill. Hyun Jae won’t allow Team Lead Hwang to get away with this. Hyun Jae won’t allow Dong Sik to get away with this. What will Hyun Jae do?

Detective Cha Soo Young (Sooyoung) realized Dong Sik is the peppermint candy killer. Detective Cha recoiled in horror. She heard him strangle then saw Detective Yang’s body dumped and plummet to the lobby floor. Detective Cha recoiled when she realized that Hyun Jae had used her trust in him to remove the handcuffs. Now he’s missing and gone rouge. What will Detective Cha do?

Team Leader Hwang Ha Young (Jin Seo Yeon) arrested Hyun Jae for Senior Chief Choi’s death. Initially that didn’t compute but Hyun Jae explained that Team Lead Hwang had to keep him on ice so she could pursue her own agenda. Team Lead Hwang didn’t pursue it without everyone noticing that something was terribly wrong. But Team Lead Hwang used her authority as a shield and forced her team to help her. She was hell bent to figure out who the peppermint candy killer was and kill him so her secret would never come to light. In that regard she was similar to Senior Chief Choi. But her interrogation of Dong Sik changed everything. Dong Sik’s strangling while crooning to her to repeat the words he forced her to say 5 years ago was disturbing. Hyun Jae knew Team Lead Hwang was in the room with peppermint candy killer and her unconscious movements showed her body knew what her mind had not comprehended. It was then that Hyun Jae knew Team Lead Hwang’s secret. She told the peppermint candy killer the next person to die was Yi Soo. Hyun Jae isn’t going to let that go. His mission has been consistent this entire series…learn who named Yi Soo as the next victim and destroy them and then kill the peppermint candy killer. Team Lead Hwang’s secret has exploded.

Officer Kang Dong Sik (Eum Moon Suk) has been discovered. This entire series is based on Dong Sik’s relationship with Hyun Jae and his desire to best Hyun Jae. The attack on Team Lead Hwang 5 years ago was part of his attack on Hyun Jae. Dong Sik gained the one thing he wanted…Yi Soo’s name…to hurt and destroy Hyun Jae. It almost worked. 5 years later Hyun Jae’s single-minded focus remains but he’s evolved into a better man. Knowing Dong Sik was the peppermint candy killer wasn’t what Hyun Jae wanted. He wanted to know who named Yi Soo as the next victim. Dong Sik had fun taunting Hyun Jae, torturing Team Lead Hwang, and cheerily admitting who he was to Detective Cha as he strangled Detective Yang. RIP Detective Yang, I liked you. You were old school. A good cop, loyal team player, and street smart. But Dong Sik tagged you as the invitation for Hyun Jae, Team Lead Hwang and Detective Cha.

I rate this episode as excellent, 10 on a 10-point scale.

The epilogue at the end of the episode (which was shown instead of a preview), when Soo Young was sobbing as she crawled on the floor towards Detective Yang really made me cry. I really did not expect Detective Yang to be killed…

I criiiieeedd soooo much! Detective Yang was such a good guy, he had a family, he was always looking out for the rest of the team, he was encouraging collaboration while everyone else was pursuing their own agenda 😭 This was so sad! Poor Sooyoung

AARRGGGH! Why Detective Yang❓⁉️ Was it because PCK 🍬➰ Dong Sik noticed the detective’s suspicion❓⁉️ I know this sounds awful, but I could have taken TL Hwang’s death a LITTLE easier since she has some culpability in Isu’s death. But seriously how much culpability does TL Hwang have when she was tortured while being held prisoner❓⁉️ if TL Hwang would have spoken up about her abduction, torture and giving Isu’s name, would it have prevented Isu’s death❓⁉️ Would the PCK 🍬➰ have been unmasked or captured esrlier❓⁉️

I was heartbroken when Detective Yang was strangled … he was the one who said the PCK 🍬➰ couldn’t be caught alone … why was he alone with the killer❓⁉️ I was mortified when the PCK 🍬➰ dropped Detective Yang down to the lobby … there really was no chance he survived. How many more people will die because Hyun Jae didn’t divulge the name of the killer and TL Hwang insisted on working alone❓⁉️

Exactly, she believes she’s responsible but Dong Sik was going kill according to his plans anyhow. The guilt she’s lived with, what a heavy burden.

was heartbroken when Detective Yang was strangled..
Detective Yang was a good officer, his death upped the anty for everyone.

        Excellent point.

Did Hyun Jae holding back on going after PCK 🍬➰ Dong Sik simply to find out who gave him Isu’s name❓⁉️ I was appalled at Dong Sik’s audacity to Hyun Jae in the police station, the PCK 🍬➰ HAS TO KNOW his days are numbered.

I was initially mystified why TL Hwang arrested Hyun Jae, then it dawned on me that she was keeping him from going after the PCK 🍬➰, so she could eliminate the PCK 🍬➰ before he could rat her out. Would knowledge of TL Hwang being under duress and torture when she named her friend matter to Hyun Jae❓⁉️

I have no doubt as TL Hwang started to interrogate Hyun Jae, he had already been profiling her based on her choices, even before he explained. Soo Young’s descriptions of TL Hwang’s behavior while interrogating Dong Sik sealed the deal for Hyun Jae … he KNOWS who named Isu.

Soo Young noticed a bleed through on Dong Sik’s shirt when he aided her in seeing Hyun Jae. It worries me that she unwittingly put Hyun Jae in jeopardy, by having Dong Sik guarding him, luckily nothing happened. Soo Young connected the dots in horror.

Detective Yang was wise when he said the PCK 🍬➰ couldn’t be caught alone. I 💗 that he convinced Detective Lee into divulging TL Hwang’s interrogation room setup. I hope Detective Yang actually recorded the interrogation.
