The Game Towards Zero Episode 11

The Game Towards Zero Episode 11

Coroner Goo Do Kyung (Im Joo Hwan) is waiting for Kim Tae Pyung (Ok Taec Yeon) outside Joon Young’s house. Do Kyung tells him not to get confident…if he can’t Joon Young neither can Tae Pyung. But Tae Pyung doesn’t recoil…he tells Do Kyung that he should stop believing he knows everything. Tae Pyung reminds Do Kyung he once asked him what he wanted. Now he’s sure he has sufficient reason to kill Do Kyung and die in the process.

Tae Pyung thinks “you will die because I love you.”

Do Kyung steps in front of Tae Pyung and demands to know what he’s talking about. Tae Pyung reminds Do Kyung that he said he killed him to live (referencing Do Kyung killing Teacher Baek (and the real Do Kyung)). Tae Pyung declares he’ll kill to protect. Tae Pyung says that Do Kyung is just a murderer who can’t stop and that’s why he’ll die. Do Kyung grabs Tae Pyung’s shoulders as he starts to walk away. Do Kyung asks if Joon Young is the one he wants to protect, the one he’ll kill. Fed up, Tae Pyung hits Do Kyung multiple time and straddles him on the ground telling him to die. Detective Seo Joon Young (Lee Yun Hee) exits her house and pulls Tae Pyung off Do Kyung.

Hmmm, I thought Do Kyung intended to kill Joon Young. Why did he ask if he’d kill her?

Cue Intro…

At the hospital, Do Kyung grapples with the fact that he’ll kill Joon Young. She finishes forms and asks if Do Kyung wants to press charges against Tae Pyung. She warns him if he lurks around her house again, she’ll report him as a stalker. She walks away. Do Kyung grabs her arm. Tae Pyung grabs Do Kyung’s arm and tell him to leave Joon Young alone. She leaves. Tae Pyung tells Do Kyung he should turn himself in. He walks away. Do Kyung smiles.

Joon Young surprises Tae Pyung when she asks if she can stay at his house. She says she’ll feel better by his side. Joon Young suggest the couch. Tae Pyung suggests Teacher Baek’s room.  Embarrassed he asks if she wants comfortable clothes. Tae Pyung struggles to find the right outfit she can borrow.

LOL, all his clothes on the bed!

Joon Young looks at the tracker necklace in Tae Pyung’s bathroom mirror. He calls to her that clothes are outside the door.  Tae Pyung freshens his bed for her. Joon Young says once they share a bed, she’ll sleep in this bed. She walks out of his room. Poor Tae Pyung doesn’t know what to say.

LOL, that sounded like she thinks they’ll progress to physical intimacy which was more than Tae Pyung was ready to be candid about.

Later he watches Joon Young sleep on the couch.

Joon Young wakes to find herself in Tae Pyung’s bed. There’s breakfast and a note from Tae Pyung saying he moved her so she’d sleep more comfortably. He urges her to eat before leaving.

Lawyer Lee is startled to find Joon Young in Tae Pyung’s room. Joon Young feels awkward too. They both assure each other nothing is going on.

LOL, even the ladies had an awkward moment.

Tae Pyung goes to Teacher Baek’s grave and puts the picture of Teacher Baek and his lady love. Tae Pyung tell Teacher Baek he’s thinking dangerous thoughts and doesn’t know if he should proceed. Tae Pyung wonders if he’ll be able to protect Joon Young. What should he do?

Do Kyung stares at a statue of Christ on his wall and removes it.

Reporter Han and young reporter Yi Ji examine Captain Lee’s car while officer call it in. They wonder why the car was left in this location. Reporter Yi says Captain Lee told her to investigate if Teacher Baek’s death was a suicide. She notes Coroner Goo performed the autopsy.

Tae Pyung finds Joon Young staring at the board of evidence at the station. He offers her coffee. She apologizes that she didn’t eat the breakfast he left her. Reporter Han and Reporter Yi arrive to report that Captain Lee is missing. Reporter Han says that Captain Lee was looking to Teacher Baek’s death. Reporter Yi shares Captain Lee thought Teacher Baek’s death wasn’t a suicide. Tae Pyung knows Captain Lee didn’t know that Jo Pil Doo’s son and Do Kyung are the same person. Reporter Han asks if Do Kyung killed Teacher Baek. Team Leader Han says they are investigating. Reporter Han is worried about Captain Lee’s safety. Joon Young assures them they’ll do their best to find them. Officer Bong takes them into another room to take their statement. Team Leader Han asks Tae Pyung how Captain Lee will die. Tae Pyung says Captain Lee is still alive. Tae Pyung guesses Captain Lee is locked up with Kim Hyung Soon in Do Kyung’s house. Tae Pyung shares that Do Kyung left his house yesterday undetected. He says he found a side door from the basement level. Team Leader Han wonders if Do Kyung moved Kim Hyung Soon out of the basement when they came to search. Joon Young wonders if Do Kyung believes the police won’t return since their first search came up empty. Officer Joon says they can’t raid without a warrant. Joon Young gets a phone call from Do Kyung. Do Kyung tells Joon Young he’ll turn himself in. He tells her to wait and he’ll come in straight away.

Do Kyung exits his house from the front door. The reporters swarm him.

Team Leader Han tells Chief Yang that Do Kyung is coming to turn himself in.

As they finish their statements to Officer Bong, Reporter Yi sees the news report about Do Kyung. He shows the report to Officer Bong.

The team watches the news reports about Do Kyung and his relationship to Jo Pil Doo’s son at the orphanage.

Chief Nam hears the news reports. Joon Young calls him.

Another hoard of reporters swarm Do Kyung when he arrives at the police station. He calmly passes through the melee. Reporter Han realizes he didn’t take any photos.

Officer Bong and Officer Joon take Do Kyung to the interrogation room.

Officer Joon reports that Do Kyung will only talk to Chief Yang. He’s not impressed. He tells Tae Pyung to help them. Joon Young tells him to record the interrogation.

As Tae Pyung enters the room, Do Kyung motions him to sit. Do Kyung asks if he’ll commit suicide in front of the police. Tae Pyung says if Do Kyung confesses him crimes, his death will change. Tae Pyung starts recording. He asks if Do Kyung is his name. Do Kyung says he’s Jo Pil Doo’s son. He admits killing the real Do Kyung. He admits killing Mi Jin. He admits killing Teacher Baek. He says he brought evidence. He slams a flash drive on the table. Do Kyung whispers it wasn’t easy to find because Tae Pyung destroyed most of the evidence. Officer Bong retrieves the flash drive. It contains the video footage of Do Kyung killing Teacher Baek. Do Kyung asks if his death changed now that he’s confessed. He demands to know if he’ll still kill Joon Young. Tae Pyung stops recording the interrogation.  Tae Pyung says Joon Young’s death changed and Do Kyung will spend the rest of time in prison. Officer Bong calls the team over. They see Tae Pyung throwing out the blood in the drain pipe. Joon Young enters the interrogation room. She arrests Do Kyung. He demands to know if Joon Young’s death has changed. Tae Pyung confirms it.

Terrific scene! Tae Pyung obviously lied about Joon Young to get him to confess. Apparently killing Joon Young was something Do Kyung couldn’t abide and was willing to confess to change her death. Do Kyung threatened Joon Young many times in this series when he promised Tae Pyung that he’d take what was precious to him. Why is he changing his tune now?

Tae Pyung rushes to the bathroom and looks in the mirror. He remembers Do Kyung demanding to know if Joon Young’s death was averted. He doesn’t understand why Do Kyung’s confession did not change Joon Young’s death. Officer Bong finds him in the bathroom and demands to know what Do Kyung meant.

Chief Yang is thrilled that Do Kyung confessed and the police won’t be attacked with a human bomb. No one knows what he’s talking about.  Chief Yang declares Tae Pyung told him they’d all die by a bomb. Tae Pyung confirms this when he enters the room. Joon Young asks about her death. Tae Pyung admits he lied to Do Kyung. They’ll all die in the bomb. Chief Yang doesn’t take it well.

Joon Young watches Do Kyung in the interrogation room. She remembers Do Kyung demanding to know if her death changed. She knows that Tae Pyung manipulated Do Kyung.

Outside Joon Young demands to know why Tae Pyung obstructed evidence and lied. Tae Pyung states lying so Do Kyung would turn himself in was necessary. He admits he planned to kill Do Kyung to save Joon Young. He shares that Do Kyung kills Joon Young before he commits suicide. He confirms the rest of the team dies because of the bomb Do Kyung plants. Joon Young doesn’t believe all this knowledge warrants Tae Pyung committing murder. Tae Pyung counters that Do Kyung murders many more including her. Killing him and sacrificing his life is worth it. Joon Young asks Tae Pyung to wait and let justice put Do Kyung away in prison. Wait and they’ll find Captain Lee. Tae Pyung agrees to wait.

Chief Nam arrives at Do Kyung’s house. The team enters to search. Do Kyung has changed the lock number. They break the lock. They head to the basement.  They find empty cages. They find the path to the side door. Team Leader Han states Do Kyung left it easy to find. Forensics finds the red box that Kim Hyung Soon kept trophy hairs from his victims. Chief Nam recalls Do Kyung calling him about the red box so many years ago. Chief Nam says it is the victim’s hairs. He shares what Do Kyung told him. Chief Nam wishes he’d caught Kim Hyung Soon not Jo Pil Doo.

Where are Kim Hyung Soon and Captain Lee?

Do Kyung refuses to talk to Officer Joon. Joon Young reports that Captain Lee and Kim Hyung Soon were moved. Tae Pyung rushes into the interrogation room and demands to know where Do Kyung moved Captain Lee. Do Kyung calmly asks if his death has changed. He asks if Joon Young’s death changed. Do Kyung asks if Tae Pyung lied. After a pause, Tae Pyung confirms he lied. But if Do Kyung had been sincere, then his death would have changed. Do Kyung laughs doubting his sincerity would have changed anything. Do Kyung sneers that no ones’ death has changed.

Tied up back to back in the rain in what looks like a cistern, Kim Hyung Soon promises that if Captain Lee will untie him, he’ll untie Captain Lee. Kim Hyung Soon says they’ll both die left here. Captain Lee doesn’t care. He’s willing to die for the ripple effect of event. Kim Hyung Soon screams his frustration.

The team discusses how Do Kyung won’t tell them where Captain Lee and Kim Hyung Soon are.

In the interrogation room, Joon Young empathizes with Do Kyung’s feeling of pain, loneliness, etc. She remembers the nice boy he was. She asks where Captain Lee and Kim Hyung Soon are. Do Kyung asks if she knew he’d kill her. He promises he’s never thought of killing her and assumed when he committed suicide in front of the police, she would witness it. Do Kyung claims he wanted her to know why he killed himself. He cries at the thought that he’ll kill her. He says if this happens it won’t be because of him, but Tae Pyung.

That’s messing with her head.

Everyone is out in the rain searching for Captain Lee and Kim Hyung Soon.

Do Kyung sits in his cell and plans.

Captain Lee and Kim Hyung Soon get rained on.

The next morning the team continues their efforts. Officer Joon bursts in and says Joon Young convinced Do Kyung to tell them where Captain Lee and Kim Hyung Soon are.

Do Kyung tells Joon Young he has three conditions 1) he must show them where Captain Lee and Kim Hyung Soon are, 2) no press, 3) Tae Pyung must come too. Do Kyung repeats that he has no intention of killing her. He must know if his death changes.

Tae Pyung looks into the mirror and sees his death scene. It hasn’t changed. He remembers Teacher Baek telling him that one’s fate doesn’t change easily. He remembers Teacher Baek warning him he might be the one to die. He opens the trunk and looks at the device he purchased.

Joon Young and Do Kyung are handcuffed and in the back of the car with Tae Pyung and Officer Bong in front. The rest of the police entourage comes with their lights flashing and their sirens blaring.

Kim Hyung Soon unties Captain Lee. He says they have to kill Do Kyung. Captain Lee topples over and doesn’t move. Kim Hyung Soon yells at him to get up.

Lawyer Lee murmurs she hopes Tae Pyung and Joon Young don’t come to his room together again. She leaves him a voicemail saying he must stamp the document for her to submit it personally today. She finds goodbye letters to all of them.

They arrive at the location. Do Kyung says they have to walk there. Officer Joon takes the handcuffs off Joon Young and puts them on him. He says he’ll stay with Do Kyung and Tae Pyung. The police leave. Joon Young turns to look at Tae Pyung. He smiles.

The police comb the woods calling for Captain Lee. There is no answer.

Kim Hyung Soon moves his chair to Captain Lee. He hits Captain Lee and orders him to wake. Captain Lee stirs.

The police decide to split up and fan out.

Officer Joon and Tae Pyung sit in the back of the police car. Do Kyung pulls out a scalpel but Officer Joon doesn’t see it because he’s on the walkie talkie communicating with the other officers.

Captain Lee rises and starts to strangle Kim Hyung Soon. He stops. He says he understand why Do Kyung locked him up. Death is too easy. He must rot in prison.  Captain Lee unties him and says he’ll take him to the police.

No, no, no!

Kim Hyung Soon attacks Captain Lee.

As expected.

Kim Hyung Soon tries to avoid the police finding him.

Do Kyung holds the scalpel to Officer Joon. Tae Pyung offers to trade himself for Officer Joon. He uncuffs Officer Joon. Do Kyung puts the scalpel to Tae Pyung.

Kim Hyung Soon avoids immediate capture but Chief Nam finds him in the woods. They wrestle. Team Leader Han and the other officers arrive. Chief Nam arrests Kim Hyung Soon. Team Leader Han gives Chief Nam the handcuffs to put on Kim Hyung Soon. There is satisfaction between the two men.

Chief Yang reports that Tae Pyung and Do Kyung have fled and he’s lost their trail.

Do Kyung hands are bloody. Tae Pyung’s wound oozes. Do Kyung declares he did everything Tae Pyung told him to do. Do Kyung tells Tae Pyung this is all his fault that Joon Young’s death hasn’t changed. Do Kyung says once Tae Pyung dies, Joon Young’s death will be altered.  He holds a photo of Joon Young in front of Tae Pyung. He demands to know if her death has changed. Tae Pyung asks if Do Kyung will believe him if he says Joon Young’s death has changed. Tae Pyung points out the obvious, that Do Kyung’s life choices made his death scene the truth, not Tae Pyung’s actions. Do Kyung demands to know if Joon Young’s death has changed.

Joon Young rushes to the men. She recalls Lawyer Lee’s frantic call that Tae Pyung left goodbye notes. She remembers moments with him.

Joon Young’s voiceover “I should have known. I shouldn’t have let it slide. I knew what you were thinking.”

She finds the location. She runs to the car with the men.

Both men see her running towards them. Tae Pyung looks one last time at the woman he loves running to him. Tears run down his face.

Tae Pyung thinks “This is the only way I can save you. I’m sorry.”

Tae Pyung puts his hand on the button to activate the bomb that will kill both him and Do Kyung. Realization hits Do Kyung at what will happen.

Joon Young screams when the car explodes, flips and falls into the water. It sinks as Joon Young screams Tae Pyung’s name.

My Thoughts

Tae Pyung’s lies catch up with him. Writer Lee tightened Do Kyung’s and Tae Pyung’s intertwined fates as Tae Pyung decided to kill himself and Do Kyung. I was surprised at Do Kyung’s adamance that he would NOT kill Joon Young. Granted, we’ve only seen Joon Young gloat about killing Joon Young in his death scene with Tae Pyung. I struggled with Do Kyung’s willingness to confess to save Joon Young. The previous episode showed Do Kyung shadowing and liking Joon Young from afar for years. But that’s NOT the way he acted in the majority of episodes towards her. He was disdainful. I don’t believe that Writer Lee has been consistent with Do Kyung’s intentions from the start. There has been a shift that doesn’t ring true to me. But Tae Pyung’s desire to save Joon Young, no his desperation to save Joon Young has only intensified as his feelings transformed from like to love. That has been consistent.

Detective Seo Joon Young (Lee Yun Hee) had a gut feeling that Tae Pyung would take matters into his own hands. She KNEW something wasn’t right. But it wasn’t enough to change Tae Pyung’s course. Joon Young’s moment of empathy for Do Kyung in the interrogation room worked. She empathized with the boy he was and the unjust treatment he and his family received. She didn’t empathize with the man he became and his murderous choices.

Kim Tae Pyung (Ok Taec Yeon) did not lie effectively long term but it was enough to convince Do Kyung to confess. Tae Pyung pushed the two emotional buttons Do Kyung has 1) his desire to change his fate and 2) his desire to change Joon Young’s fate. But Do Kyung’s confession didn’t change anything. The police team still dies from the explosion and Joon Young’s death words from Do Kyung still occurred in his death scene. Tae Pyung decided he must change fate by killing himself and Do Kyung. We know the bomb won’t work. We know Do Kyung and Tae Pyung will survive or this series ends at episode 11. Nope, they both survive and the dance between Tae Pyung and Do Kyung will continue. What I’ve enjoyed this last two episodes is Tae Pyung taking an active stance to solidly the future he wanted. Tae Pyung is right, life is a series of decisions each of us make. Our choices to deal with what life throws at us paves our future.

Coroner Goo Do Kyung (Im Joo Hwan) was desperate to change Joon Young’s fate. Do Kyung was horrified to know he’d kill Joon Young and willing to follow Tae Pyung’s instructions to change it. Im Joo Hwan showed two sides to Do Kyung, the cold calculating killer and the man that loved Joon Young so much he’d confess to change her fate. I don’t buy Do Kyung’s pain as much as Writer Lee wants me too. He was too smug and gleeful for the majority of this series for me to swallow that his heart changed his path. Im Joo Hwan did his best to sell that Do Kyung cared for Joon Young and was willing to confess to his murderous actions to save her. Even if I believe that Do Kyung cares for Joon Young, I can’t believe it was more important that his number one driver…to save himself. Do Kyung didn’t want to hear Tae Pyung’s truth…Do Kyung’s actions created his path. Do Kyung wanted to blame Tae Pyung. In fact, blame is something that Do Kyung has mired his life in. Blame Chief Nam, blame Captain Lee, blame Teacher Baek, blame Tae Pyung. Blaming was the easy way for Do Kyung—he made others responsible instead of holding himself accountable.

I rate this rate this episode as terrific, 9 on a 10-point scale.

“Hmmm, I thought Do Kyung intended to kill Joon Young. Why did he ask if he’d kill her?” -KJT. Tae Pyung’s 🔮🙌 vision of Do Kyung’s 🥼💀 death has Do Kyung🥼💀 telling him that he will never find Joon Young 👮‍♀️📿, which insinuates she is dead, but did not say he killed her. The problem is, I don’t think there is ANYONE who Do Kyung🥼💀 trusts enough to help him. Was there someone else who took Joon Young 👮‍♀️📿, which played into Do Kyung’s 🥼💀 plan❓⁉️ What bothers me is that it seems Tae Pyung 🔮🙌 has put the idea of killing Joon Young 👮‍♀️📿 into Do Kyung’s 🥼💀 head.

Here is my BIG QUESTION: I would like to know how Do Kyung🥼💀 wrangled TWO captives (Captain Lee Joon Hee 📰🙎‍♂️& serial killer Kim Hyung Soon ⚰♠️) through the tunnel to the hidden door, down the street and to his vehicle (without any of the throng of reporters noticing), hike to the woodland location, go up the stairs to the tank, down the ladder and then tied them up … when did he bring the rope and chairs❓⁉️ It would positively exhausting to drag one unconscious captive to that destination, let alone two … presumably BEFORE his arm was injured. I doubt either captive would have gone quietly, if they were conscious. I thought it was a stretch for Do Kyung 🥼💀 to hide the serial killer when the police raided his house … moving both captives to such an elusive location defies all logic.

I 💖, 💟, 💗 that newsman Joon Hee 📰🙎‍♂️refused to help the serial killer and told him to die. The was satisfaction when Chief Nam 🧪🔁🧪 located and arrested serial killer Kim Hyung Soon ⚰♠️ … thank goodness❗ I thought the writer was going let the serial killer be on the loose.

“Blame Chief Nam, blame Captain Lee, blame Teacher Baek, blame Tae Pyung. Blaming was the easy way for Do Kyung—he made others responsible instead of holding himself accountable.” -KJT . OMO❗ Having a victim mentality, refusing to take ANY responsibility and being smug and gleeful are CLASSIC signs of narcissism. The writer has given Im Joo Hwan the impossible task of making narcissistic character Do Kyung🥼💀 admit to his mistakes and care more about someone else than himself (Joon Young 👮‍♀️📿) … something a narcissist would NEVER DO❗ DEFYING LOGIC is precisely why the character Do Kyung🥼💀 DOES NOT RING TRUE.

Yep, time and time again Do Kyung🥼💀 chose evil. Teacher Baek 🕶♿ did say that changing fate was difficult to do. “Do Kyung didn’t want to hear Tae Pyung’s truth…Do Kyung’s actions created his path.” -KJT I wonder why Do Kyung’s 🥼💀 death didn’t change with his confession.

The police did a poor job searching Do Kyung🥼💀, when he was arrested … missing the scalpel. Although this played into Tae Pyung’s 🔮🙌 plan to eliminate Do Kyung🥼💀. I was puzzled 🧩 Tae Pyung 🔮🙌 waited until Joon Young 👮‍♀️📿 was in sight before he exploded the bomb 💣💥 with the intent to kill Do Kyung 🥼💀 and himself in the process … the timing added a layer of cruelty to make her witness the explosion 💣💥.

You can make a list of defy logic moments for this series.

Agree with you on every point. Sweet justice when Team Leader Han gave Chief Nam the handcuffs to put in Kim Hyun Soon.

Well said, well said. Would it be better if he was pure evil without redemption versus forcing moments where he has feelings?

I was puzzled 🧩 Tae Pyung 🔮🙌 waited until Joon Young 👮‍♀️📿 was in sight before he exploded the bomb 💣💥 with the intent to kill Do Kyung 🥼💀 and himself in the process … the timing added a layer of cruelty to make her witness the explosion 💣💥.
I don’t think he intended her to find him or see the bomb go off. But seeing her running to save him (and Do Kyung), Tae Pyung had to take the action to protect her by eliminating Do Kyung from this world.

Defying logic yet again … writer Lee Lee should start writing fantasy dramas … oh wait … “The Game Towards Zero” is quickly becoming a revenge fantasy.

“Sweet justice when Team Leader Han gave Chief Nam the handcuffs to put in Kim Hyun Soon.” -KJT

Sweet 🍭⚖ justice … yep, but now the question is can the police 🚔 connect the dots to convict him of crimes that are NOT past the statute of limitations…

“I don’t think he intended her to … see the bomb go off … Tae Pyung had to take the action to protect her by eliminating Do Kyung from this”-KJT. I can accept that explanation.
