Crash Landing on You Episode 4

Crash Landing on You Episode 4 Recap

North Korea…

While on an intercept course to another boat to return Se Ri to South Korea, the boat is boarded and searched by the coast guard. Se Ri and Jung Hyuk hide in the hold. Ri Jung Hyuk (Hyun Bin) suggests a trick he saw in a South Korea drama. He apologizes then kisses her as the coast guard open the hold. Jung Hyuk pulls away once the hatch is closed. Se Ri is affected by the kiss. When the hatch opens again, Yoon Se Ri (Son Ye Jin) and Jung Hyuk grab each other and kiss passionately. While that distracts the coast guard, they eventually order the couple out of the hold. Se Ri holds onto Jung Hyuk and explains they will be married soon and got carried away. The coast guard orders them to run to shore. Se Ri sees the boat that will return her to South Korea in the distance. She says they’ll only stay a bit longer. The coast guard won’t budge and force them the turn and return to shore. Jung Hyuk points out they couldn’t do anything else or the captain of their boat for hire would have been killed.

Back on solid ground, Jung Hyuk tells Se Ri with the coast guard on alert, it will be 10-15 days before they can try again. Trying to stay calm, Se Ri claims the kisses meant nothing. Jung Hyuk agrees. Outraged, Se Ri calls him despicable. Jung Hyuk is shocked to have that word applied to him. Se Ri wants Jung Hyuk to assure her everything will work out. Jung Hyuk states he can’t lie to her. Se Ri is frustrated to say the least.

Se Ri sneaks out leaving a note for Jung Hyuk. Stealth isn’t her strong suit and Jung Hyuk hears her leave. He finds the note. Eventually he finds Se Ri getting ready to paraglide back to South Korea. Even though no one answered her radio call, she’s determined to leave the way she came. Jung Hyuk points out that no matter what side of the fence she lands on, she’ll be shot dead. Jung Hyuk spots the radio in her pocket and demands to know how long it’s been on.

Soldier are gathering to find the source of the radio transmission. When state security Officer Jo Cheol Gang learns the transmission was trying to contact South Korea, he orders the men to step it up and follow him to the mountain.

Jung Hyuk tells Se Ri the troops are coming. Se Ri offers to leave Jung Hyuk behind. He points out she’s considered his finance. He spots the troops coming. He grabs her and they fall off the mountain together. The parachute opens. Se Ri orders him to hold tight. Jung Hyuk assures her he is. She thanks him for everything he’s done.  They enjoy the mid-air cuddle.

The troops arrive but find nothing.

Irked Officer Jo arrives at the secret outpost to check in the eavesdropper monitoring Jung Hyuk and Se Ri’s communications. He informs Officer Jo that the couple returned home but he doesn’t know why. Officer Jo orders the couple be kept under close surveillance. He knows something isn’t right with this couple. He is generous with cash for the eavesdropper.

At the black market the eavesdropper buys meat for his son. He overhears Jung Hyuk wanting to buy coffee beans. As the eavesdropper extracts his wallet to pay for the meat, a man snatches the wallet. Jung Hyuk pursues the thief. The merchants exclaim the thief is a gang member and the officer won’t be able to take on an entire gang.

Sure enough, Jung Hyuk ends up at the gang’s courtyard. He’s told to leave. He refuses. A fight ensues. It’s many to one but Jung Hyuk fights well. Eventually a man comes up behind him but is thwarted when the eavesdropper arrives and knocks the weapon out of the man’s hand.

Walking back to the black market, the eavesdropper thanks Jung Hyuk who warns the man to take care. They say their goodbyes. The man watches Jung Hyuk walk away.

I like that the eavesdropper has a conscience.

Captain Ri sends his faithful four – Sgt Pyo, Lt Park, Staff Sgt Kim and Private Geum – to watch over Se Ri. She bemoans missing the boat and staying longer than expected. She’s flattered that Jung Hyuk sent them to watch out for her. Sgt Pyo counters that Jung Hyuk knows she can’t be trusted. Se Ri tells Sgt Pyo she wants the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash back. He refuses.

Wol Sook stops by and invites Se Ri to the Colonel’s wife’s birthday party. Se Ri declines surprising Wol Sook.

The officer that interrogated Captain Ri worries to Officer Jo about the consequences. Officer Jo calmly states Captain Ri doesn’t do rash things. He tells the officer that Captain Ri’s finance supposedly belongs to Division 11. He wants to confirm that. He asks the officer to arrange a meeting so he can do so.

Se Ri wishes she’d ended up with Officer Jo who is more powerful than Captain Ri. Sgt Pyo notes a promotion opportunity is coming up. However, Captain Ri isn’t that popular. They tell her the Colonel controls the promotion but he heeds his wife’s advice. Se Ri realizes the birthday party initiation she just declined was for the Colonel’s wife.

Se Ri attends the Colonel’s wife’s party and acquits herself well. She’s forced to lie about her name taking the name, Choe Sam Suk, from an album on display.

Captain Ri is pleased to learn that Se Ri went to the Colonel’s wife’s party to help him get a promotion. But the reason, so Se Ri can leave and his low power needs a bump up, irks him. The talk turns to Captain Ri’s belief that there are secret armored jeeps being utilized.

Captain Ri looks around the jeep brigade and sees the armor plans and component being fashioned. He leaves with a piece of the specialized metal for proof.

That seems like flimsy proof.

Officer Jo meets with an officer that agrees to see if Captain Ri’s finance is in Division 11.

Se Ri flatters the Colonel’s wife without shame. She asks the Colonel’s wife to put in a good word for her finance, who agrees. Jung Hyuk “accidentally” runs into Se Ri as she leaves the Colonel’s wife’s home. Se Ri realizes he was waiting for her. She admits she was trying to get him promoted. Jung Hyuk tries to tell her there is no need but gets cut off when Se Ri asks if she can sit in the front of the bike.

Se Ri rides on the front of the bike as Jung Hyuk takes them home. He tells her not to stay out late. She is sure he cares about her. He denies it. She doesn’t believe it.

The clam bake North Korea style is a hit. Se Ri allows herself to enjoy the simple food and soju. Jung Hyuk can’t help but watch her laughing and enjoying herself. They lock eyes. Jung Hyuk looks away. Se Ri knows there is something there.

South Korea…

At a family dinner Se Ri’s father Chairman Yoon announces his second son, Yoon Se Hyung, will take over the company. Se Hyung’s wife, Sang Ah, is thrilled. The first son, Yoon Se Jun and wife Hye Ji and not happy. The brothers argue and the wives argue. Se Jun reminds all that once Se Hyung wanted to smear Se Ri’s illegitimate status to the press so she’s leaves Korea. Se Hyung counters with Se Jun’s happiness at Se Ri’s missing and presumed dead status. Se Jun counters that no one in the family has ever treated Se Ri with respect, instead letting her know she was unwanted and not good enough. He declares their mother probably tried to kill Se Ri when she first joined the household.

Se Ri’s step mother stands. She recalls a young Se Ri looking at the sea and counting. She declares her husband has made a mistake. Se Ri’s life or death status hasn’t been confirmed. She declares she believes Se Ri may come back.

It appears she feels guilt about Se Ri’s past treatment.

North Korea…

The foursome and Se Ri play a drinking game. It comes down to Se Ri versus Sgt Pyo. The eavesdropper listens and plays along too. He’s stuck with headphones while they are having fun.

Loved the eavesdropper in the scene. It added depth.

The next morning Jung Hyuk roasts the coffee beans and makes pour over coffee. Se Ri wakes and is surprised to find herself in bed. Then the smell of coffee hits her. She hurries to the kitchen to find Jung Hyuk making the coffee. He pours her a cup. She relishes every sip. He’s made her soup for her hangover too. As he leaves, Se Ri thanks him and gives him a sign.

Jung Hyuk’s actions speak volumes.

Unfortunately, Jung Hyuk doesn’t know what the sign means. Neither does Sgt Pyo. Staff Sgt Kim declares it means giving one’s heart. Jung Hyuk is taken aback. Staff Sgt Kim suggests that Jung Hyuk’s noble ways have worked their way into her heart. Jung Hyuk remembers kissing Se Ri. Sgt Pyo scoffs that Jung Hyuk would never trifle with a woman, like pretending engagement when engaged or married to another. Jung Hyuk’s face tells them that’s exactly what he’s done.

Meanwhile in town, Jung Hyuk’s finance Seo Dan (Seo Ji Hye), her mother and uncle arrive at a department store to shop for a new dress. Seo Dan’s mother complains she’s too thin. But when a rival says the same, Seo Dan’s mother repeats what Seo Dan told her. The rival rubs in the fact that her daughter is married and has a newborn. As Seo Dan goes to say hi to the nursing mother, her mother tells her to take the girl down a peg or two. Seo Dan assures her she can do that easily. Seo Dan strides away. The rival suggests the Seo Dan’s finance volunteered to be stationed at an outpost to avoid marriage. Seo Dan’s mother guarantees the marriage will occur.

Se Ri strolls the village with the Colonel’s wife and Wol Sook. When a vendor tries to interest the Colonel’s wife in beauty products, Se Ri is amazed to see her products. Se Ri cringes at the vendors lack of knowledge and informs the Colonel’s wife of the properties of the beauty serum. The Colonel’s wife is sold. Se Ri chides the vendor to know the ingredients of the products as a minimum.

South Korea…

The insurance agent Mr. Park frets to Se Ri’s assistant Hong Chang Shik, that Se Ri could be stranded on an island or dropped into the Demilitarized Zone. Se Hyung and his wife see them talking. Mr. Park shares his opinions to Se Hyung and his wife. Mr. Hong believes Se Ri’s words about going up high meant the North. Se Hyung warns Mr. Park not to spread rumors about his sister’s disappearance. Se Hyung’s wife wants to see the books for Se Ri’s company.

North Korea…

Goo Seung Jun (Kim Jung Hyun) is enjoying the good life, pheasant hunting and bugging his handler.

Seo Dan hires a taxi to take her to the village where Jung Hyuk lives. Unfortunately, car issues arise. The driver leaves to get help. Se Jun notices her when they drive by. He orders his handler to help the lady in distress. Se Jun unsuccessfully flirts with Seo Dan.

Se Ri loses the Colonel’s wife and Wol Sook in the market. She’s nervous alone in the unfamiliar crowded market.

Officer Jo learns that there is no woman in Division 11 that fits Se Ri’s description.

When Jung Hyuk arrives in the village, Wol Sook informs him that Se Ri got separated from the group in the market and they couldn’t find her. Jung Hyuk rushes to market to find Se Ri.

I think I’m falling for Jung Hyuk.

Se Ri doesn’t know where to turn.

Flashback…a young Se Ri counts by the sea at night.

Se Ri counts in the market to calm herself.

Jung Hyuk searches the market.

Seo Dan and Seung Jun arrive in the village.

Se Ri looks into the crowd and sees a light of a candle. She walks to the light. It’s Jung Hyuk! They are relieved to find each other. Jung Hyuk says this time he bought a scented candle. Se Ri laughs. Jung Hyuk smiles.

Swoon worthy! Lovely moment for our couple!

Bonus Scene…

Jung Hyuk stares at a photo and his camera and remembers…In Switzerland, Se Ri is standing on a tall bridge recording her final words to her family. Jung Hyuk realizes she intends to commit suicide. Just as he’s about to go to her Seo Dan complains they are supposed to be getting to know each other. Jung Hyuk suggests a picture. Seo Dan agrees. As Se Ri psyches herself to go over the bridge, Jung Hyuk calls to her, startling her. He asks her to take a picture. She agrees and he hands her the camera. Then he and Seo Dan walk off the bridge. Se Ri is forced to exit the bridge to take the picture. She murmurs to herself that the man could get a better woman than the one he is standing next to.

My Thoughts

Our couple is drawn to each other and share their first kiss. Writer Park Ji Eun delivered many delightful moments between our couple. I adored the bonus scene that revealed they had indeed met in Switzerland. I’m assuming Jung Hyuk remembers Se Ri from back then, but she doesn’t remember Jung Hyuk. Considering she was suicidal, that makes sense. Seo Dan and Seung Jun met but she wasn’t interested in him. She only wanted to reconnect with Jung Hyuk. Unfortunately, Officer Jo learned that Se Ri isn’t in Division 11. How will Jung Hyuk wiggle out of this?

Yoon Se Ri (Son Ye Jin) tried to help Jung Hyuk get a promotion. Se Ri flattered the Colonel’s wife shamelessly and asked her to say positive things to the Colonel. Se Ri was thrilled to see her cosmetics in the black market. She obviously knows her product line well. Se Ri is drawn to Jung Hyuk. Who wouldn’t be? He’s kind, sensitive, and easy on the eyes. I’m assuming his kisses packed a punch. I bet I’m not the only viewer that is drawn to Jung Hyuk. We also got insight into Se Ri’s rejection by her family and how it contributed to her suicidal intents. The scene where Se Ri was lost in the market and counted as an adult overlaid with the flashback of counting as a girl was well done.

Captain Ri Jung Hyuk (Hyun Bin) demonstrates more innate kindness. Jung Hyuk roasted coffee beans for Se Ri, chivalry isn’t dead. He was entranced by her smiles and banter with his men. He dashed off to the market to find her. He bought a scented candle and held it aloft so she could spot it. He’s her beacon of safety. Swoon! Hyun Bin makes Jung Hyuk incredibly appealing. But his bubble is about to burst. Seo Dan has arrived and Officer Jo believes Se Ri isn’t a member of Division 11.

I rate this episode as almost terrific, an 8.5 on a 1 to 10 scale.

  1. Jane Tilly says:

I find it curious 🤔 that Se Ri’s 🌬👩‍⚖ dad, Chairman Yoon 🙊🙈 already appointed younger son Se Hyung 🤑👐 to the leadership position he was going to give Se Ri 🌬👩‍⚖ when she has only been gone a few days. Chairman Yoon 🙊🙈 just sat there while his son’s and their wives argued about power, money and Se Ri 🌬👩‍⚖ … will he be a man of action after he takes everything in or is he a bump on a log❓⁉️ Color 🖍 me 🎊surprised🎉 that Se Ri’s 🌬👩‍⚖ stepmom was the one who stood up and indicated it was a rash decision as she though Se Ri 🌬👩‍⚖ would return. I do not like the greed in oldest brother Se Joon 🤑💢💸 and his wife’s eyes looking over Se Ri’s 🌬👩‍⚖ company.

Jung Hyuk 👨‍✈️🎖 was brilliant in escaping the mountain with Se Ri 🌬👩‍⚖ via paraglider, but is hard to believe NO ONE saw them. I concur that Jung Hyuk’s👨‍✈️🎖 actions to make Se Ri 🌬👩‍⚖comfortable, especially the little things, speaks volumes. I’m still curious about Jung Hyuk’s 👨‍✈️🎖feelings about his fiancée … is it an arranged marriage or has he developed feelings for Seo Dan 🕵️‍♀️🇰🇵❓⁉️ My first impression is that Seo Dan 🕵️‍♀️🇰🇵 is not a warm and loving person … then again, in my bias I do not expect a North Korean spy to be warm and caring …

I concur that I’m glad the eavesdropper 🎧🇰🇵 has a conscience. It doesn’t hurt that he is Jung Hyuk’s 👨‍✈️🎖debt for recovering his wallet. I think the eavesdropper will end up saving Jung Hyuk’s 👨‍✈️🎖 bacon 🥓.

It is a little frightening that Officer Jo 🚛👿 found out Se Ri 🌬👩‍⚖ was NOT part of division 11. That damning information coupled with Se Ri 🌬👩‍⚖ giving herself a different alias may come back to bite her or will they be able to explain it as deep cover❓⁉️ Something will hitting the fan when Seo Dan 🕵️‍♀️🇰🇵 makes her appearance … presumably in the next episode. Jung Hyuk you have some ‘splaining to do… On a side note 🎶, actor Oh Man Suk, who plays Officer Jo 🚛👿 , played Son Ye Jin’s (Se Ri 🌬👩‍⚖) affable father in “Something in the Rain” … a far cry from the corrupt North Korean officer in this drama. Is anyone else finding this 54 year old actor attractive ❓⁉️ Oh Man Suk is like fine wine or cheese … aging VERY NICELY

The bonus scene was very revealing about Se Ri’s🌬👩‍⚖ state of mind at the time. I want to know if they remember each others. Is Jung Hyuk’s 👨‍✈️🎖 kindness based on remembering how fragile Se Ri was when they came across each other in Switzerland ❓⁉️ Will Seo Dan 🕵️‍♀️🇰🇵 recall their encounter when she sees Se Ri 🌬👩‍⚖❓⁉️

His heir switch was quick. He is a man of few words. I’d like to think the stepmom would be an advocate for Se Ri when she returns home.

Jung Hyuk 👨‍✈️🎖 was brilliant in escaping the mountain with Se Ri 🌬👩‍⚖ via paraglider, but is hard to believe NO ONE saw them.
Yep, this is one of several times I’ve turned my brain off and just accepted what Writer Park wrote. Had to do that while watching Legend of the Blue Sea , because the inconsistencies could be annoying in that series.

I think the eavesdropper will end up saving Jung Hyuk’s 👨‍✈️🎖 bacon 🥓.
Even if if he doesn’t, I like his story. He’s forced to do what he does because he can’t walk away. But he struggles with the job and the ripple effects of what he reports.

Oh Man Suk, who plays Officer Jo 🚛👿 , played Son Ye Jin’s (Se Ri 🌬👩‍⚖) affable father in “Something in the Rain” … a far cry from the corrupt North Korean officer in this drama. Is anyone else finding this 54 year old actor attractive
54?! Really?! Amazing. Gotta get his skin care regime ASAP.

Is Jung Hyuk’s 👨‍✈️🎖 kindness based on remembering how fragile Se Ri was when they came across each other in Switzerland ❓⁉️
He’s been drawn to her from the start which makes his actions even more swoon worthy. A long held torch is romantic indeed.
