Arthdal Chronicles Episode 10 Recap
Part 2: The Sky Turning Inside Out, Rising Land
Saya (Song Joong Ki) silently prays to Araman Haesulla…you came to us as an Igutu, became the envoy of Asa Sin and died. Tanya (Kim Ji Won), the Wahan great mother, and direct descendant of Asa Sin, asks if Araman Haesulla is Igutu. Saya is stunned when Tanya repeats his prayer…she can hear his thoughts!
Wow! Tanya has psychic powers!
Moo Baek shows Tagon (Jang Dong Gun) the byeoldaya (ancient writing on a disc) found in the Wahan sacred place and holy bag. Moo Baek states it was Asa Sin’s byeoldaya. Tagon says the Wahan are direct descendants and Tanya is the direct descendant of Asa Sin. Moo Baek doesn’t know where Tanya is but Tagon does.
Tanya considers what she saw, Wahan face paint, the symbol her mother showed her, etc. Cha Eun interrupts her thoughts and asks why her face isn’t painted. Tanya says she’s waiting for the other participant. Cha Eun tells her to paint her face next time. Tanya asks about the face paint. Cha Eun explains it was worn by Asa Sin the progenitor of the white mountain tribe. She notes the current religious power, the Asa tribe, outlawed the face paint and they must worship in secret. Tanya wonders if Asa Sin is the great white wolf. Chae Eun’s younger sister Nun Byeol and Chae Eun bid her good night.
Tagon grapples with who Tanya really is. He recalls Tanya’s knowledge of an incident only Taealha knew about.
Saya tells Tanya the indirect descendants, the Asa tribe, would lose power if a direct descendant of Asa Sin was alive. Saya says Asa Sin never returned but sent her envoy Araman Haesulla. Tanya asks if Araman Haesulla is Igutu. Saya wonders if Tanya can hear his thoughts. Saya tells her that he found acceptance here and it saved him (though they don’t know he’s Igutu). Tanya realizes that she’s the direct descendant of Asa Sin! She asks if a direct descendant appeared, would that person become the high priest? Saya states Tagon would make that person the high priest. Tanya can’t believe she could/should be the high priest.
Love that she immediately saw the truth…the powerful position…her life just got more interesting.
Hae Mi Ho (former leader of the Hae tribe) asks Tanya’s father about Moo Baek’s visit. Before he can answer, Taealha (Kim Ok Vin) and her aide Hae Tauk sweep in. Taealha order Hae Tauk to take Tanya’s father away. Mi Ho’s aide, Yeobi, watching Tanya’s father taken. Mi Ho tells his daughter they should stick with the original plan. He’ll stay by Asa Ron and she’ll stay by Tagon. Taealha tells her father his power days are over, she’s the tribe’s leader. She sweeps out of the room. Yeobi confirms that she’s been tracking his daughter’s activities.
Saya and Tanya are surprised to find Tagon waiting for them.
Tagon asks Tanya about the great white wolf. Tanya doesn’t know many details citing his warriors killed her mother before the details could be passed on to her. Tagon asks about the holy bag. Tanya states his warriors destroyed everything. As Tagon draws a symbol, Tanya wonder if Tagon knows who she is. Tagon shows her the symbol her mother told her about before she died. Tagon asks if she knows the symbol. Tanya hesitates then lies she doesn’t know the symbol. She asks if she remembers anything if she should tell him. Tagon confirms this.
Tanya tells Saya that Tagon wanted to know about the origin of the Wahan tribe. She claims not to know why. Saya asks why Tanya is alive and his maid. Tanya explains she had a dream which the she as the successor to the great mother of Wahan has. Saya is surprised Tanya dreams too but states that isn’t enough to keep her alive. Tanya dreamed the great white wolf said she must protect him. Saya points out she tried to kill herself when her friend died which she wouldn’t have done if she followed the great white wolf’s edict. Tanya claims she couldn’t do it because she had to protect him. Saya recalls his dream when Eunseom almost kissed her. Flustered, Tanya rises to prepare his bed. Saya asks what kind of person he was in her dreams. Tanya explains Saya was lonely and wanted to live in the light. Saya steps to her, takes her hand and places it on his face and states he wants to tell her all…if she’s willing to listen. Tanya wonders if Saya can be used to get what she wants.
Loving Tanya’s careful consideration, weighing what to say and who (if anyone) to trust.
When Chae Eun and Nun Byeol return home, Moo Baek is waiting. He asks Chae Eun to introduce him to Tanya.
Tagon asks his warriors (including Moo Baek’s brother Moo Gwang) if they are willing to do as he says for Arthdal. They confirm they will. They end up snatching a man. They are shocked when a glowing blue-eyed Neanderthal (either Rottip or Mr. N) interrupts them hanging the man.
Saya shares that Tagon brought him back after the great hunt but doesn’t know why. Hae Tauk interrupts claiming to be there to share what happened.
The marketplace is buzzing. One man committed suicide by hanging, one man slit his throat, and another threw himself into the well. Moo Gwang claims they were possessed and death was likely anyhow. Moo Gwang declares that Asa Ron did not appease the spirits even though Tagon followed instructions to the letter. Moo Baek wonders if his brother is following Tagon’s orders.
Moo Baek confronts his brother who admits to killing the men. Moo Baek yells that killing innocent people isn’t right. Moo Gwang yells that if Tagon order, he’d kill Moo Baek. Shaking his head, Moo Baek says Moo Gwang is being used in a power struggle between Asa Ron and Tagon. Moo Gwang doesn’t care and warns Moo Baek to stay out of his way or suffer the consequences.
Moo Gwang couldn’t be clearer where his loyalties lie.
Taealha arrives to tell Tagon the latest. He smiles and shares he ordered the deaths. She surprised he followed her advice when he was initially against it. She asks why he changed his mind.
Asa Ron Niruha (leader of the Hwinsan (aka white mountain) tribe) learns of the deaths and that people believe the spirits are not appeased. Asa Ron foolishly believes it doesn’t matter because he’s irreplaceable.
Taealha asks Tagon if he’s found a replacement for Asa Ron. She sees his smile and asks if he’s found a direct descendant to replace the indirect Asa Ron. Tagon says if the people believe he’s found a direct descendant, that’s all that matters. He explains the Wahans can be tied to Asa Sin and he has proof from a loyal source, Moo Baek. Taealha knows Asa Sin went south and it is possible. She’s shocked when Tagon identifies Tanya as the direct descendant.
Saya and Tanya hear the people’s murmurs that Asa Ron’s ceremony didn’t appease the spirit. Saya wonders what his father’s plan is.
Tagon wants to spread rumors. Taealha agrees.
Saya watches Hae Tauk filling the ears of some who then spread the rumor to others. The people are led to the conclusion that because Asa Ron isn’t a direct descendant, he isn’t all powerful. Yeobi asks Hae Tauk what’s she’s up to. No answer is given.
Saya explains to Tanya that people are willing to accept rumors. He wonders if Tagon found a replacement for Asa Ron. Tanya says nothing. Saya realizes Tagon has identified Tanya as the direct descendant. He pushes her to a tree and declares he’s not a fool that believed her sudden change of heart. He’s angry and shakes her. He demands to know why she lied. Tanya knocks his hand away and reminds him that he told her she needs power to find out why her people had to suffer and why Eunseom had to die. She admits she used him to gain power. She claims to regret it. Saya asks what she regrets. Tanya says he reminds her that they never should have met. She admits she’s the direct descendant of the great white wolf which must be Asa Sin. Saya considers and asks if she will replace Asa Ron.
Didn’t you wonder if Tanya was about to tell Saya that he’s the identical twin to Eunseom?
In slave hell…Dal Sae acts as translator for the cruel masters. He hopes and wills Eunseom to survive the mining pit. One of the slaves, Syoreujagin pilfers some of the shifted jewels. Eunseom’s pit crew doesn’t produce enough and are denied food. Sateunik, a weaker slave apologizes. Eunseom won’t stop working. Even so, he’s mistreated by his own crew. Sateunik apologizes to Eunseom. Goldo learns an Igutu is in the mines. One miner asks Eunseom his name. Eunseom can’t get Teo Dae’s words and suicide out of his head, and won’t speak.
Flashback…Eunseom cracks are Teo Dae’s suicide and pronounces the words his captors wanted him to say and more. Dal Sae bends over in pain to see the mighty Eunseom broken.
That was a difficult flashback to watch.
Eunseom sobs his pain.
Near the statue of Araman Haesulla riding Kanmoreu, one of Asa Ron’s clan is found murdered with the words “Learn why Asa Sin sent Araman” and the “White Peak Mountain’s Hearts” are referenced. Tagon and Taealha arrive shocked at what they find. Asa Ron arrives equally surprised and displeased. Saya watches from the crowd.
Alone, Tagon tells Taealha he had nothing to do with this killing. She wonders if the White Peak Mountain’s Hearts are to blame and recalls that Asa Ron wiped them out years ago. She wonders if this can be used to their advantage.
Asa Ron’s aide is livid and assumes Tagon is behind the murder. Asa Ron doesn’t believe Tagon would be reckless but recalls Tagon’s vow to win no matter what.
Taealha wonders if the truth that Araman Haesulla was an Igutu should come to light and help Tagon. He doesn’t believe people will accept the truth; everyone hates Igutu. He wonders if Asa Ron created the situation.
Asa Ron declares that they must capture the White Peak Mountain’s Hearts.
Tagon declares they must capture the White Peak Mountain’s Hearts. He orders his warriors to find them. Tagon notices Moo Baek and another warrior is missing.
Moo Baek finds a warrior’s sword broken in the woods. He finds blood. He finds the warrior’s body and his heart is ripped out. Immediately he assumes it was a Neanderthal.
Asa Ron orders his followers the White Peak Mountain’s Hearts must be killed.
In the marketplace, Chae Eun, Nun Byeol and others assume someone is using the White Peak Mountain’s Hearts for their political agenda. Asa Ron’s aide arrives and announces the White Peak Mountain’s Hearts are plotting against Arthdal. He orders anyone who know White Peak Mountain’s Hearts members, to turn them in. He orders anyone spouting that Araman Haesulla was an Igutu is an enemy of Arthdal. The crowd vows to find them. The aide tells the crowd that White Peak Mountain’s Hearts members are among them now. He orders them to come forward. He walks past the women and accuses a man of being a member. The man is beaten. Tanya who is in the crowd is horrified. Chae Eun spots her and tells her to leave after telling her an emergency meeting will be held tonight. Doti spots Tanya in the crowd.
Asa Ron tells his aide that a war they won’t lose is imminent. Mi Ho arrives with a gift, a White Peak Mountain’s Hearts member.
Moo Baek tracks the Neanderthal.
When Doti reaches Chae Eun, she says the woman she was talking to was Tanya. Chae Eun is taken aback, how did a Wahan join the White Peak Mountain’s Hearts? She recalls Moo Baek asking her to find Tanya.
Tanya isn’t happy that Saya killed the priest. She tells him what happened at the marketplace. Saya takes this is good, he wants chaos and confusion. He says that’s the only way they can rise to power. Tanya states she’s not interested in Saya and she’ll go to Tagon. He declares his father will do the same. He stops her and asks what she wants. She walks away and he yells “what must I do”? Tanya turns, sighs, states – he can’t make an action that can’t be undone without conferring with her and he must value human life. Saya promises. Tanya tells him he’s forgiven. Saya is relieved.
Tanya and Saya step outside to see Taealha and Tae Hauk ordered to come to Asa Ron. They are accused of spreading rumors. Taealha chuckles knowing this is the next move by Asa Ron. She agrees to go but warns no one can touch her. Saya tells Tanya to meet him at the tree house after she runs her errand. Saya thinks that Asa Ron counter moved quicker than expected, now he will make his move.
Gil Sun reports to Tagon that Taealha has been taken. Tagon realizes he can’t fight Asa Ron without being accused of being a member of the White Peak Mountain’s Hearts. He is even more determined to find the members of the White Peak Mountain’s Hearts. He tells Gil Sun to inform Asa Ron he’ll negotiate tomorrow morning.
Tanya delivers a note to a White Peak Mountain’s Hearts woman. Chae Eun follows her.
Tagon spots a notification stating “Our union leader who was in the form of an Igutu, please lead us”. He tears it down and rips it. He believes the White Peak Mountain’s Hearts know he Igutu.
Saya muses that his father’s head must be spinning with all the developments. He smiles and wonders if Tagon is still ashamed that he is Igutu.
Harim is surprised when Moo Baek tells him a Neanderthal killed a warrior. They are even more surprised when they return home and find the two Neanderthals staring at a shocked Nun Byeol. Moo Baek draws his sword.
Tanya goes to the tree house. Chae Eun follows and startles Tanya when she enters the tree house. Chae Eun asks if her name is Tanya. Chae Eun asks if she knows Eunseom. Tanya asks how she knows Eunseom.
Tagon is seriously unnerved.
Saya thinks “Enjoy father. Everything that is shaking will come to an end.”
Direct descendants threaten indirect descendants. The possibility that a direct descendant existed was stirred into the Arthdal politics and the ripple effects started. I ask again…what about the two Neanderthals? Where have they been and why are they back? Moo Baek continues to impress though he’s stuck with a loser brother. Should this episode have been called “Schemers”?
Saya (Song Joong Ki) believes in chaos management. Writers Kim Young Hyun and Park Sang Yeon let Saya scheme and affect change. He had no qualms about killing the priest to further his agenda of chaos. But Tanya got him in her power when she threatened to leave. Saya couldn’t allow that. Does Saya believe Tanya can read his mind?
Asa Ron (leader of the Hwinsan tribe) counter moved Tagon…or so he thought. Asa Ron couldn’t believe he could be replaced. That’s a big mistake, He is replaceable. I’ll give him credit, he figured it out and decided to take Taealha into custody for spreading rumor. He’s right, Taealha did spread the rumors. Did Mi Ho suggest this?
Hae Mi Ho (leader of the Hae tribe) kept playing the only move he could…support Asa Ron. He brought Asa Ron a White Peak Mountain’s Hearts member. He’s still a schemer.
Tagon (Jang Dong Gun) has a secret, he’s Igutu. He felt the heat this would be exposed. Tagon correctly understood that Tanya is the true high priest, and schemed to end Asa Ron’s power. He was willing to kill. But when the priest was killed, Tagon was confused who did that. I find it interesting that Taealha did NOT share what a schemer Saya is. Tagon never wonders if Saya is pulling his strings. I enjoy Tagon being unsettled and afraid that his secret will be revealed. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
Tanya (Kim Ji Won) achieved control over Saya. Tanya continues to impress. She wanted power over Saya and she got it. Will Chae Eun tell her Eunseom is still alive? Tanya’s psychic powers…awesome.
Eunseom (Song Joong Ki) said the words his captors demanded. Eunseom was broken and a shell of his former self. It was hard to watch.
I rank this episode (on a scale from 1-10) as very good. My rating chart is below:
