Touch Your Heart Episode 5
Background. To get a role in a drama, actress Oh Yoon Seo (Yoo In Na) has been assigned to work for Lawyer Kwon Jung Rok (Lee Dong Wook) for three months. Initially, Yoon Seo isn’t competent to act as Jung Rok’s secretary. He’s irked by her. Determined she gains competency in phones, copying, etc. Jung Rok sees the effort and the effects. Now that Jung Rok trusts Yoon Seo, she is a value add on the cases that come through his door. Each case brings them closer as they learn more about each other and have each other’s backs.
This episode. CEO Yeon Joon Kyu (Oh Jung Se) assigns Jung Rok the high-profile case of the battered woman that killed her husband. Was it self defense or premeditated? Proving self defense is next to impossible. Prosecutor Yoo Yeo Reum (Son Sung Yoon) is not happy to learn Jung Rok is the defense attorney. She demands to know why he took the case. Jung Rok points out that he doesn’t always have the option to choose his candidates. He promises to do his best for his client. Yeo Reum swears Jung Rok won’t defeat her. Yeo Reum’s jealous coworker tries to get under her skin by stating her ex-boyfriend, Prosecutor Kim Se Won (Lee Sang Woo) is dating his clerk.
Yoon Seo and Jung Rok continue to inch closer together. Jung Rok finds Yoon Seo charming. Yoon Seo admits more than she wants. Jung Rok wonders if Yoon Seo likes him. Yoon Seo wonders if Jung Rok likes her.
At the trial, Jung Rok enters a plea of self defense for his client. He points out his client was beaten so brutally by her ex-husband on the day he died she was hospitalized for 9 weeks. He points out his client didn’t precision strike her husband with a knife, she flailed fighting for her life. Yeo Reum pours cold water on the argument when she reveals the client had a $5M life insurance policy on her husband.
Yoon Seo pledges her support and belief in Jung Rok. He in turn promises if she ever needs someone in her corner, he’ll be there for her. Yoon Seo promises one day she’ll share the emotions he just stirred in her with his declaration. Jung Rok asks Yoon Seo if she likes him. Yoon Seo is shocked by the question.
The battered wife case puts Yeo Reum and Jung Rok on opposite sides. Writer Yegeo purposely made it murky whether or not the wife killed her husband in self-defense. One part of the justice system that bothers me is the battle between two opposing attorneys can take precedence over the client and case. The lawyers want to win and justice may or may not be served. I was taken aback when Se Won demanded to know why Yeo Reum was obsessing about this case. If he were the prosecuting attorney, he’d had to be as focused as Yeo Reum is. The question struck me was one that Se Won wouldn’t ask another male prosecutor or himself.
Oh Yoon Seo (Yoo In Na) was shocked when Jung Rok asked if she likes him. She has told him in many ways that she does like him. Yoon Seo doesn’t want to admit that first. She would want Jung Rok to make a declaration first. I liked Yoon Seo’s continued quiet support of Jung Rok. He’s a low-key guy and her support is competent and charming. How can he not be drawn to her? They smolder when they stare at each other. Their text exchanges are enjoyable. Yoon Seo’s ex-boyfriend who has hacked her phone and reads her texts was not mentioned this episode.
Kwon Jung Rok (Lee Dong Wook) couldn’t say no to the battered wife case. He didn’t want it but accepted it when pushed. He didn’t blindly assume his client was innocent. Instead he visited her, hired a psychiatrist to make an independent assessment, and wondered about the life insurance connection. I’m assuming Jung Rok wasn’t blindsided with the reveal of the $5M insurance policy. How will Yoon Seo and his client extract themselves from the doubt that reveal cast over them?
I rank this episode (on a scale from 1-10) as very good. My rating chart is below.
