Would I Date Him? Wok of Love

This time on Would I Date Him? I reflect upon the leading man from the series Wok of Love.

Our candidate: Seo Poongportrayed by Lee Joon Ho, is the chef that can’t win for trying from Wok of Love.

Background. Seo Poong loses the wife lottery when his new bride has an affair with another man. Leading lady Dan Sae Woo (Jung Ryeo Won) has a similar experience when her new husband deserts her at the altar. They meet on a bridge contemplating their bad fortune. But Seo Poong’s fortune cookie foretells that Sae Woo is the woman he will love next. Seo Poong’s bad luck continues when he loses his job, his recipe book is stolen, and his wrist is crushed by thugs. He convinces gangster with a heart of gold Doo Chil Seong (Jang Hyuk) to bankroll his eatery in exchange for teaching Chil Seong’s men skills in cooking.

His pluses:

VISIONARY. Seo Poong had a gift for seeing the possible and finding a way to make the dishes that seem impossible happen.
NEVER GAVE UP. Seo Poong got knocked down again and again. His wife had an affair, he lost his job, his inspiration book was stolen, his wrist was injured…you get the idea. But Seo Poong took the licking and kept on ticking.
VALUED HIS FRIENDSHIP. How many male characters put another man’s friendship into the mix when deciding if to proceed with a love relationship? Seo Poong did. He openly called Chil Seong his brother/friend. He didn’t want to hurt Chil Seong by dating Sae Woo. He offered support to Chil Seong. The reciprocal support from Chil Seong was amazing.

His minuses:

WIMPY. Seo Poong struggled to stand up to Sae Woo’s mother and father. They didn’t think he was good enough to date their daughter. He wasn’t impressive trying to convince them otherwise. Even Sae Woo was irritated with Seo Poong on this matter.
WORK CULTURE INCLUDES BULLYING. This really bugged me. Seo Poong bullied Sae Woo when she worked under him. He allowed others to bully her. I know this is the kitchen culture, but I don’t have to like it. I wanted Seo Poong to change the culture when he was master of the kitchen, but that didn’t happen. I was disappointed but not surprised.
BAD TIMING. I couldn’t believe it when Seo Poong wanted some physical action from an exhausted Sae Woo. Let her sleep and engage her when she has the energy.

Is he my next date?

I had to think about this for a minute. Then it became clear. While I like Seo Poong, I don’t LIKE Seo Poong romantically. Originally I thought his bullying in the kitchen was enough for me to say no to this date, but it wasn’t that hard. I don’t LIKE Seo Poong. 👎

If you want to date him, you won’t have to arm wrestle me for the privilege.

Nah, too wimpy for my taste. Pass.

I generally agree with you on Poong’s 👨‍🍳 pluses and minuses. Although I felt like Poong 👨‍🍳 DID perservere in trying to convince Sae Woo’s 🤺 family to accept him from complying with the parents’ wishes to cooking for them for a month. Maybe Poong 👨‍🍳 wasn’t the best strategist, but he constantly tried over an extended period of time. I felt like dad 🏦 gave half-hearted acceptance for the sake of his daughter, but mom 🌰👸 NEVER offered any hope of acceptance, despite Poong’s 👨‍🍳 sincerity. How long was he supposed to continue to try? Poong 👨‍🍳 might consider asking for advice from his hyung Chil Seung 🕶️💛, although Chil Seung 🕶️💛 wasn’t exactly swimming 🏊 in relationship experience.

I know my family would voice any concerns they had about a serious relationship, but would offer acceptance unless or until they thought I was being mistreated or taken for granted.

My ideal man would not have bad timing, but I didn’t think Poong 👨‍🍳 was OVERLY persistent, he did stop. If this behavior continued to recur, it could be a deal breaker 💔.

Initially I thought it was disappointing that Poong 👨‍🍳 DID NOT overhaul the bullying work culture at the hotel 🏨 restaurant. However he ONLY recently took over the hotel 🏨 restaurant, experienced difficulty establishing himself as head chef with Chef Wang’s former staff and may have been picking his battles, as getting the chefs to make the less expensive menu items to lure 🎣 in customers was his biggest challenge at the time. Poong 👨‍🍳 was NOT a bully in the hotel 🏨 kitchen, it was Chef Wang’s staff that were the troublemakers. Poong’s 👨‍🍳 kitchen culture at The Hungry Wok wasn’t as severe as in the hotel 🏨 restaurant. His angry outbursts at The Hungry Wok diminished after he learned an embarrassing lesson after he publically thrashed Sae Woo’s mom 🌰👸. The Hungry Wok kitchen staff really only talked smack about each other, they did NOT bully (other than Geok Jeong 🚗 and Doo Sik fighting out their differences at Seol Ja’s 🔪 insistence when they first worked together). I felt that once Chef Wong’s former kitchen staff accepted Poong 👨‍🍳 as their head chef or were replaced, the bullying would be mitigated.

I 💖 Poong’s 👨‍🍳 tenacity, ingenuity, his propensity to be a loyal friend and I found him to be a hottie.

I was attracted to Poong 👨‍🍳 and would ABSOLUTELY go on a date with him. A long term relationship would be debatable based on the outcome of the following points:
🔸Did his timing improve after a discussion about consideration of others❓⁉️. If you don’t A-S-K, you don’t G-E-T; people cannot read your mind and may need to be informed to decide how they will respond. Yeah, “If you don’t A-S-K, you don’t G-E-T” works for “timing” too 😋
🔸Did the kitchen culture change once Poong 👨‍🍳 established the hotel 🏨 kitchen as his own❓⁉️

If there were significant improvements, COUNT ME IN for the long haul 🚛.

Nope. No way. Nada. Although, this could be my natural knee-jerk propensity to avoid good guys talking so…

I agree with you guys about Poong addressing the bullying once it became his kitchen. Even if he still subscribed to the traditional chef-kitchen culture, the PHYSICAL ABUSE should be stopped. I still can’t get over the fact that Sh*tface poured hot food on Seo woo’s hand ON PURPOSE and that was acceptable (whether or not she was Poong’s girlfriend). All the more since she IS his girlfriend, that alone puts him in the reject pile. We all know that had Chul seung seen that, Sh*tface would’ve been fired and also caught out back in the parking lot to have his ribs “tenderized”.

OMO, I completely forgot about Chef CrapTastic 💩 deliberately pouring hot food 🍜 on Sae Woo’s 🤺 hand ✋ while Poong 👨‍🍳 stood by with nary a word, let alone a reprimand (I had to go back and watch it to be sure).

Despite my attraction to Poong 👨‍🍳, allowing Chef CrapTastic 💩 to get away with deliberately injuring someone, especially the woman he loves, IS A DEAL BREAKER.

I concur with Beez that Chef CrapTastic 💩 should have been fired and I felt he needed to have his ribs “tenderized”. Looks like a job for Poong 👨‍🍳. Doo Sik, who already has a grievance against Chef CrapTastic 💩, may want to join in and maybe we should include some assistance from the rest of Big Dipper 🌌 boys.

*nodding* except Chil seung wouldn’t need any help! 😁😎

Chil Seung 🕶️💛 would NOT need any help, but Poong 👨‍🍳 should be the one to “tenderize” him and he didn’t inherit or cultivate fighting 👊🤓🥊 skills AND would probably need assistance. Doo Sik also has a grievance with Chef CrapTastic 💩.

Date Poong? I’d rather have a root canal! A one note, boring performance.
