Sketch Episode 8 Recap
Flashback…Prosecutor Yoo (Shi Hyun’s brother) tells Baek Woo Jin there is nothing that can be done to bring the criminal to justice. Baek Woo Jin declares he’ll find a way.
He’s ripe for the picking.
Flashback…Jang Tae Joon (Jung Jin Young) tells Baek Woo Jin the last victim isn’t the only victim. He asks can something be done so the last victim IS the last victim? That gets Baek Woo Jin attention. Tae Joon claims to understand what Baek Woo Jin is feeling. He says they can change the world together. He holds out his hand.
Tae Joon tells Kim Do Jin (Lee Dong Gun) (Terminator 2) that Baek Woo Jin (Terminator 1) tried to kill him 2 years prior and is his predecessor.
At the task force office, everyone considers Baek Woo Jin’s motives. Detective Kang Dong Soo (Rain) points out that there is more than meets the eye. Why did Baek Woo Jin get plastic surgery? Why did he make it look like he was dead when it was a criminal, a man that kept trophies of his many victims? Sargent Yoo Shi Hyun (Lee Sun Bin) realizes that Baek Woo Jin killed the criminal to stop him from committing more crimes. Dong Soo states Baek Woo Jin is just like Do Jin. Dong Soo believes Do Jin is eliminating criminals to stop more crimes from being committed.
I appreciate that Dong Soo has a brain and can assess situations accurately.
Tae Joon tells Do Jin that Baek Woo Jin didn’t have the needed conviction. He says if the task force learns the information Baek Woo Jin has, all is lost.
What information would put Tae Joon in dire straits?
Dong Soo points out that Baek Woo Jin was Terminator 1 and Do Jin is Terminator 2. He believes a mystery man directs who to eliminate.
Baek Woo Jin is stopped by thugs. The thug leader calls him President Baek Chung Soo.
Shi Hyun tells Dong Soo she’s on board with his theory. Dong Soo can’t understand why Ji Soo was killed. She wasn’t a criminal. She fought criminals. Dong Soo wonders if catching Do Jin will solve everything.
The thugs hit Baek Woo Jin saying he must repay his loan. The thug leader wants Baek Woo Jin to turn over his store to repay the loan. He tells Baek Woo Jin unless he pays his interest, they’ll kill his wife.
Following Dong Soo’s theory that there are other criminals that were killed before they could commit crimes, Lieutenant Oh Young Sim (Lim Hwa Young), computer specialist, reports her findings and there are seven such cases. The cases are in the window that Baek Woo Jin operated. Young Sim compares the video footage of the latest crime they suspect Baek Woo Jin of and video of him at a police function. It’s a match. Dong Soo declares Baek Woo Jin is Terminator 1. Chief Moon Jae Hyun (Kang Shin Il) says Do Jin is Terminator 2. Shi Hyun wonders why Baek Woo Jin wants to kill Tae Joon. Dong Soo states there are two possibilities – either Tae Joon is planning a criminal act that must be stopped or (Tae Joon is the mystery man). Chief Moon stares at the sketch of Baek Woo Jin pointing a gun on Tae Joon and considers.
Flashback…Baek Woo Jin points the gun at Tae Joon who asks why he wants to kill him. Baek Woo Jin surprises Tae Joon by stating that he works for a man called “Elder”. Tae Joon calmly states he couldn’t share all the details in their pursuit of justice. Baek Woo Jin wonders if those he killed were merely men that Elder wanted dead regardless of their criminal past. Tae Joon counters they saved lives. Baek Woo Jin counters they clumsily tried to act like gods. Tae Joon has two questions – is Baek Woo Jin ready to kill him and doesn’t Baek Woo Jin realize that Tae Joon knew he’d try to kill him? Tae Joon shots Baek Woo Jin in the arm. Tae Joon tells him never return. Baek Woo Jin asks if Tae Joon can really let him live. Tae Joon declares Baek Woo Jin died today.
Good story layer by Writer Kang. Tae Joon reports to someone else. Does Elder have the future seeing powers or does he use Tae Joon for the future vision like Tae Joon uses the Terminators as assassins?
Shi Hyun finds Dong Soo looking at Baek Woo Jin’s case file on her desk. She teases him that he shouldn’t rifle her desk. Dong Soo teases back that he wasn’t leaving a love letter. Young Sim tells them she’s found an interesting kidnapping case from 2 years ago. The police had almost given up when the victim arrived at a hospital and the criminal was murdered. Young Sim teases Dong Soo that he should have something to say to her. He gestures with his hand. Young Sim gets red. Shi Hyun notices her calendar with a date marked in red. She knows Dong Soo saw it.
What did the gesture mean?
Baek Woo Jin visits his wife in the hospital.
Shi Hyun and Dong Soo go to the kidnapping victim’s last known work address. They learn she’s retired and sick in the hospital waiting for a heart transplant.
Baek Woo Jin married the kidnapping victim he saved!
Baek Woo Jin’s wife recalls the first day they met when he saved her from a man that wouldn’t take no for an answer. Baek Woo Jin says that isn’t the first time they met. She wants details. He claims it is a secret and considers telling her. But she starts coughing and the moment is gone. Baek Woo Jin tells his wife everything will work out.
The doctor tells Baek Woo Jin the transplant donor hasn’t been identified. The doctor says unless Baek Woo Jin can come up with the cash, the surgery can’t be done.
Baek Woo Jin tells his wife the visit with the doctor went well. She urges him to eat. He agrees. Just as Baek Woo Jin gets on the right elevator, Shi Hyun and Dong Soo exit the left elevator.
Shi Hyun and Dong Soo speak with Baek Woo Jin’s wife. She relates she was unconscious when someone killer her kidnapper. Shi Hyun shows her the sketch and asks if she can identify the man. Baek Woo Jin’s wife sees her husband but maintains a poker face. Baek Woo Jin’s wife asks if the man in the sketch killed the kidnapper. They don’t answer her question citing the current investigation.
In the hospital corridor, Shi Hyun tells Dong Soo that Baek Woo Jin’s wife recognized Baek Woo Jin was the man in the sketch. Dong Soo says that Baek Woo Jin brought his future wife to the hospital after saving her from kidnapper. Dong Soo is sure Baek Woo Jin is nearby.
Baek Woo Jin’s wife calls him and reports the police officers had a sketch of a man that looked like him. Baek Woo Jin claims the police made a mistake. He says he’ll look into it and get back with her.
The doctor calls Baek Woo Jin with the good news that a transplant donor has been identified. The bad news is he must pay the fee by 5pm. Baek Woo Jin says he’ll get the money. Baek Woo Jin calls the loan thug and agrees to turn over his store. The thug tells him to bring his seal to make the transfer legal.
Baek Woo Jin is dismayed when Dong Soo and Shi Hyun are at his motorbike. Dong Soo shows his badge and asks Baek Woo Jin to come with them. Baek Woo Jin feign ignorance. Dong Soo asks if he’ll come with them. Baek Woo Jin looks at his watch and states he has limited time.
Prosecutor Yoo asks Baek Woo Jin if it is really him. Baek Woo Jin confirms it but says he doesn’t have time to chat. Dong Soo gets straight to the point. Why does Baek Woo Jin want to kill Tae Joon? That surprises Baek Woo Jin. Dong Soo claims they know everything. Baek Woo Jin asks why he’d want to kill Tae Joon. He revises the question and asks if they have a future seer too. Everyone looks at Shi Hyun. Dong Soo confirms they have a future seer. Shi Hyun questions Dong Soo’s candor. He retorts they have to come clean if they want cooperation. Dong Soo details the murders that Tae Joon directed Baek Woo Jin to commit but it is obvious that Dong Soo doesn’t know who the future seer is. Baek Woo Jin offers to tell them everything he knows but he needs 3 hours to deal with a personal matter. Dong Soo cuts to the chase and asks if the future seer is Tae Joon. Shi Hyun objects. Dong Soo counter that everyone suspects Tae Joon. He lays out the evidence. Dong Soo asks again if Tae Joon is the future seer. Baek Woo Jin surprises them by stating if that’s all they know, they’ll never figure out the truth.
Love it! Now they know there is more to the story than what they’ve suspected.
Do Jin sleeps fitfully and puts a knife to Tae Joon’s throat when he wakes him. He drops the knife when he recognizes Tae Joon. Do Jin tells him he’ll keep it together unlike Baek Woo Jin. Do Jin asks if Tae Joon saw the future.
They let Baek Woo Jin go. The team reels with the shock of what Baek Woo Jin told them. Chief Moon declares they need to find Tae Joon. Prosecutor Yoo believes as a prosecutor (not a police member) he should find Tae Joon. He leaves. Dong Soo tells Shi Hyun they have to stop Dong Soo from killing Baek Woo Jin.
The heart arrives at the hospital.
The loan thug tells Baek Woo Jin they should sign a blank contract. Baek Woo Jin balks but with 1 hour to go before the bill is due, he has no choice. The loan thug tells Baek Woo Jin to do what his men order and his wife will live.
At the loan office, they thugs are ready. There’s a knock at the door but no one is there. Another knock reveals Do Jin.

Baek Woo Jin walks through the empty office. He sees the contracts and the duffle bag of money. Do Jin shows himself and aims his gun at Baek Woo Jin. Do Jin hold up a cell phone with Tae Joon on speaker. Tae Joon reminds Baek Woo Jin that he was suppose to disappear. Baek Woo Jin says he doesn’t intend to kill Tae Joon. The future seer believes what he’s seen. Baek Woo Jin openly doubts the future vision reminding Tae Joon that accuracy isn’t guaranteed. That gets Do Jin’s attention.
Interesting that Tae Joon’s accuracy isn’t 100%.
The doctor looks at Baek Woo Jin’s wife and wonders where he is. There’s 40 minutes until the hospital must transfer the heart to another hospital. The doctor orders Baek Woo Jin’s wife prepped for surgery.
Tae Joon says Baek Woo Jin must die. Baek Woo Jin doesn’t quibble but requests a favor. He explains his wife will die without surgery and the surgery won’t proceed without the money in the duffle bag. Tae Joon considers the request but rejects it and hangs up.
Dong Soo wonders if the other future seer knew Baek Woo Jin would go to the loan office.
Do Jin puts the phone in his pocket. Baek Woo Jin says he knows that Do Jin believes he’s doing the right thing because he once felt the same. Do Jin doesn’t care what Baek Woo Jin says. Yes! Dong Soo didn’t pursue Do Jin instead choosing to help the innocent woman!
Shi Hyun alerts the hospital the money is on the way. Dong Soo halts a motorcycle and rushes to the hospital. But its too late.
Bummer. It’s the innocents that die that get me.
Chief Moon alerts Prosecutor Yoo that Shi Hyun and Dong Soo are with Baek Woo Jin in the hospital waiting for his wife to die. Prosecutor Yoo states they can’t find Tae Joon.

A man (the Elder?) pours tea in a private dining room.
Dong Soo demands to know who is the Elder. Baek Woo Jin says the Elder is…
Tae Joon enters the private dining room.
Baek Woo Jin throws his cell phone in the trash.
Dong Soo considers what he’s heard.
Another stellar episode where the Elder is revealed as the one that can see the future. Writer Kang continues to peel the onion of this storyline. We learn that Tae Joon can’t see the future, but the Elder can. Did Baek Woo Jin tell Dong Soo who the Elder is? What connects Tae Joon and the Elder? Now Baek Woo Jin has nothing to live for and he’s out in the world. Will Do Jin continue to hunt him? Will he disappear? This was the first episode where the sketches were minor props, not major story drivers.
Detective Kang Dong Soo (Rain) took the money and ran…but it was too late. He didn’t chase Do Jin, instead he raced to the hospital. But he was 30 minutes late and the heart was sent to the next recipient. Health care costs can be cruel. My respect for Dong Soo continues to grow. He named the elephant in the room and declared Tae Joon was the future seer. He admitted Shi Hyun was the team’s future seer. It was time for full disclosure with Baek Woo Jin. I appreciated that Dong Soo thanking Shi Hyun for the reprimand about trashing his life for revenge. I loved their banter about snooping at her desk and her supposed boyfriend. These two are getting closer and trusting each other more and more. That’s what I want, a true partnership, where they have each other’s backs. Dong Soo’s candor with criminals never fails to amuse. He counseled decorum before calling the thugs trash. I dig Dong Soo more and more!
Yoo Shi Hyun (Lee Sun Bin) doesn’t blindly agree with Dong Soo. She didn’t like that he outed her as the future seer and objected. Shi Hyun tells Dong Soo what she thinks and doesn’t sugar coat it. More and more, Dong Soo does the same in return. I like their partnership. I especially enjoyed the teasing banter they engaged in. More please. I appreciated that Shi Hyun responded to Dong Soo’s candor by revealing her parent’s death anniversary was the next day. Graciously Dong Soo told her to go and offered to stay with Baek Woo Jin. With her brother by her side, Shi Hyun paid her respects.
Kim Do Jin (Lee Dong Gun) is a killing machine. I keep hoping that he’ll engage his brain and start questioning Tae Joon. Baek Woo Jin was a wealth of information but Do Jin wasn’t interested in anything he had to say. When the scripts are handed out for an episode I’d imagine Do Jin’s dialogue could fit on a single page. I hope Writer Kang lets this character evolve. He could and should question Tae Joon and learn more. Then he’ll become more interesting versus the monosyllabic assassin for Tae Joon/the Elder he is.
I rank this episode (on a scale from 1-10) as terrific. My episode ranking chart is below.
