Hwayugi Episode 14 Recap

Hwayugi Episode 14 Recap

After taking the punishment for his lady love, Woo Hwi Chul (Cha Seung Won) collapses and passes out. He wakes to hear Oh Gong calling to him. Hwi Chul realizes he isn’t dead. Son Oh Gong (Lee Seung Gi) is relieved when Hwi Chul open his eyes. His not happy to learn he didn’t take all 99 hits, racking up 88 instead. He staggers to his feet to take the remaining. Oh Gong tells him he took ten hits. He points to the elder who took one and is passed out. Ha! Hwi Chul is relieved. Then he realizes he’s blind. Sam Jung (Oh Yeon Seo) feels his coldness.

The Asanyeo (possessing Bu Ja’s body) orders General Frost to retrieve the censor from Hwi Chul’s house. She’s determined to mix her blood with Sam Jung’s blood that spilled on the censor. Only then can she switch bodies with Sam Jung and become stronger than she’s ever been. PK (Lee Hong Ki) arrives informing General Frost his sister the Fairy Ha is needed. Asanyeo tells General Frost they now have an opportunity to steal with censor.

Oh Gong grimaces as Hwi Chul clutches his hands for warmth. Hwi Chul is relieved to learn his lady love Na Chal Nyeo ended her life cycle. He hopes she reincarnates as a flower. Assistant Ma brings fruit to help Hwi Chul feel better.

Sam Jung is impressed by Assistant Ma’s loyalty to Hwi Chul. Oh Gong admits loyalty is forever though betrayal’s punishment is severe.

PK brings the Fairy Ha. Hwi Chul is relieved she’s there.

PK recalls when the Fairy Ha had a separate body and was beautiful. Oh Gong’s brother recalls that she had a crush on Oh Gong. That irks Sam Jung. PK notices but Oh Gong does not. Instead he brags that many fairies wanted him. Done with the “everybody wants me” bragging, Sam Jung declares she must go. Oh Gong doesn’t understand why she’s angry. PK explains it. Oh Gong dashes after Sam Jung. Oh Gong’s brother comments his brother really likes Sam Jung. He wonders how General Frost and Fairy Ha came to share a body.

Oh Gong is already at Sam Jung’s apartment when she arrives home. Oh Gong tells her no one has been pretty in his eyes since he wore the bracelet. Sam Jung asks if she was pretty prior to the bracelet. Oh Gong didn’t see her in that way. She worried that the bracelet is the driver. Oh Gong counters that even without the bracelet he’d want to stay by her side. Sam Jung smiles. Oh Gong gives her a back hug. He teases that he likes comforting her after fights. He pledges his love. Sam Jung heart is brimming with joy. When he turns to leave, she tells him after fights lovers don’t leave each other. He pauses. She waits with baited breath. Oh Gong asks if he can stay. Sam Jung agrees.

These two have more and more chemistry. I’m loving it.

The Fairy Ha gets sleepy and wonders if her brother is trying to take possession of her body.

The Asanyeo waits for General Frost to return with the censor.

General Frost takes the censor and replaces it with a replica.

Sam Jung goes to make a warm drink. Oh Gong smiles at her nervousness. He suggests they travel together. She likes the suggestion. She has to search for him. She finds him on her bed. He says they’ll get married anyhow. He holds his hand to her. She takes it. He asks why she hasn’t pledged her love. Sam Jung declares she’s heard the ringing of the love bell. Recall it isn’t a love bell but a death bell. Sam Jung doesn’t know this and declares their fate is unchangeable. Oh Gong knows this and the smile is wiped off his face.

Assistant Ma gripes that death is too high a price to pay. She asks the elder who will die – Sam Jung or Oh Gong? The elder notes Assistant Ma is fond of Oh Gong. Assistant Ma declares because Oh Gong took 10 hits for Hwi Chul, she’s revised her opinion. She offers the elder a drink for the hit he took for Hwi Chul. The elder wonders if Oh Gong will be able to love like Hwi Chul.

Sam Jung can’t believe the love bell is gone. Recall Oh Gong took it. Sam Jung declares because the love bell has sealed their fate as lovers, she can remove the bracelet. When she goes to do so, Oh Gong pulls his wrist away. He implores her to enjoy the status quo and keep him close to her. Frustrated that Oh Gong doesn’t believe in the love bell, Sam Jung wants to prove it him by talking to the magic store owner’s grandson who gave it to her. Oh Gong stops her saying he’ll see the grandson alone. He disappears.

At Oh Gong’s house, Oh Gong knows that once Sam Jung learns about the death bell, she’ll believe in that fate too.

At Sam Jung’s house, Sam Jung frets that Oh Gong doesn’t believe in the fated love because he doesn’t have the courage to remove the bracelet.

General Frost brings Asanyeo the censor. She’s thrilled. She drops her blood onto the censor. She orders General Frost to ensure the censor is heated so she can Sam Jung can switch souls.

Sam Jung dreams of Asanyeo’s past life. The moment is Asanyeo preparing for her wedding. But it is Sam Jung’s face not Asanyeo’s face in the dream. Sam Jung wakes and wonders about the strange dream. She has a headache.

Assistant Lee notices Sam Jung’s headache. She shares the strange dream of a getting ready for a wedding. Assistant Lee starts to leaves to go to the bank. Sam Jung has a premonition he’ll fall and hurt his arm. She asks if he fell earlier in the day. He didn’t. She explains she just had a vision he fell. Unconcerned, Assistant Lee leaves. Outside, he worries about Sam Jung. He slips and falls and hurts his arm. He realizes Sam Jung’s premonition came true.

The censor percolates.

Oh Gong is surprised to see Hwi Chul on his feet though he can’t see yet. He manages to sit in his chair. He declares Oh Gong is a thug. Assistant Ma agrees. He asks how has entered the house. Asanyeo enters the room. She stares at Oh Gong. She asks Oh Gong and Sam Jung to burn her so her anger doesn’t follow her into her next life. Hwi Chul believes her. She promises the day of her burning will come soon. Oh Gong looks at her speculatively.

Oh Gong asks why she’s done an about face. Asanyeo says because he won’t marry her, she’s giving up. Oh Gong doesn’t believe her. Asanyeo retorts that with Sam Jung by Oh Gong’s side, she’ll never have his love. She steps towards Oh Gong and asks if he’ll marry her. He declines. Asanyeo teases they’d be a match in heaven. Sick of heavens fated reach, Oh Gong tells her to buzz off.

Assistant Ma confirms the censor is still in it’s hiding place. Assistant Ma tells her not to tell PK about burning Bu Ja.

PK looks forward to the day he runs Hwi Chul’s entertainment company. The Jade Dragon (who possess Alice’s body) scoffs that her father’s kingdom is more impressive. PK doesn’t care and rejects her offer to see the palace.

Oh Gong waits for Sam Jung to return to the office. Assistant Lee takes the opportunity to scold Oh Gong for not getting Sam Jung a piece of jewelry in response to the bracelet she gave him. Taken aback, Oh Gong realizes he has no money. Assistant Lee declares a simple ring since they plan to marry would suffice. Oh Gong calls his brother and states he’ll drop by for some cash soon. Oh Gong leaves.

Sam Jung sees a woman pushing a stroller and has a premonition she’ll lose control of the stroller and a motorcycle will hit it.  When she returns to the office, Assistant Lee says her premonition that he’d get hurt came true. Thinking of the stroller she runs to stop the accident. Just in the nick of time, she grabs the stroller out of the path of the oncoming motorcycle. She’s pleased to see Oh Gong by her side as she gathers herself.

Sam Jung tells Oh Gong she can see future events. Oh Gong finds it odd that she’s gaining abilities. Sam Jung is psyched claiming one day she’ll be his protector. Oh Gong dares her to wear a bracelet and become his protector today. With a cool slight of hand, Oh Gong slips a ring on Sam Jung’s finger. He declares now that he’s given her a ring she can’t take off, they are even. Sam Jung is pleased and promises to protect him. She vows to come when ever he calls.

The Fairy Ha warms Hwi Chul with a warm drink. He frets that he’s still cold and can’t see. She promises to bring warm clothes for him. She notices water on stop of the container holding the fake censor. She lifts the lid and sees the censor. She touches it and it turns to water. She realizes her brother put the fake censor in the box. She recalls her brother telling her about the death bell and that she must protect herself. Asanyeo asks General Frost if Oh Gong and Sam Jung have a death bell fate. She doesn’t seem to mind.

Oh Gong announces he’s marrying Sam Jung. Hwi Chul, Assistant Ma and his brother are shocked. Hwi Chul calls him delusional. Hwi Chul doesn’t want anyone to tell Sam Jung about their death bell fate. Assistant Ma offers to pick out a wedding dress for Sam Jung. Oh Gong appreciates the gesture.

Later Hwi Chul worries that either Sam Jung or Oh Gong will die. Assistant Ma suggests he tell Sam Jung about the death bell.

Asanyeo tells General Frost the soul switch with Sam Jung is tonight. PK finds her with General Frost. He smells the lotus flower scent of Sam Jung and roses (Asanyeo’s scent). He doesn’t understand why he’s smelling this combination Asanyeo suggest they eat ice cream. PK notes that Bu Ja died a terrible death just like Asanyeo. She is miffed to get his sympathy. PK strokes her hair gently. She stares at him.

Mr. Kang teaches a class. He shows them a joint burial site. He can’t believe it when Bu Ja joins the class. They stare at each other. When the students exit at the end of class, Bu Ja does too. The lights go out. The screen displays his words to Bu Ja that killing her was mistake. Then the coffin with the warning, I’ll find you is displayed. Mr. Kang smiles. The lights come on and the class disperses. Mr. Kang wonders if Bu Ja is trying to scare him.

Sam Jung dreams about the horrible moment when Asanyeo dressed in her wedding finery, open the curtains to find a coffin not a groom. She wakes with a start. She tells Assistant Lee the wedding dream is plaguing her.

The censor percolates. Hwi Chul has Asanyeo and AJ with him. He gets confused where each is sitting. Asanyeo is pleased, the slow soul switch is working, and Hwi Chul’s sensed Sam Jung’s soul coming into her. Asanyeo spies the ring Oh Gong gave her.

Outside Asanyeo tells Sam Jung that her power in the past included manipulating souls and foreseeing the future. She declares those powers cost her as she was betrayed and died. Asanyeo admits being jealous that Sam Jung has a permanent protector. Sam Jung puts the ring hand behind herself. Asanyeo declares Hwi Chul may be blind but he can still sense energy.

Hwi Chul doesn’t understand how he got confused where Asanyeo and Sam Jung sat. He worries his energy sensing powers are fading. He tests himself by sensing objects on the coffee table. Assistant Ma helps him pass the test.

At Oh Gong’s house, Oh Gong and his brother discuss the wedding plans. Oh Gong’s brother admits he’s worried that Oh Gong is marrying someone he shares a death fate with. Oh Gong declares he’ll keep the death fate next to him and destroy it. Oh Gong’s brother reminds him marriage is an unbreakable contract. Oh Gong replies that he ignored their first contract, and he intends to keep this one. He vows to risk everything to keep the contract, even if he’s the one that dies.

At Sam Jung’s house, she admires her ring. She has another premonition of breaking a glass which comes true. She’s shocked to see the glass in her hand unbroken.

The censor percolates.

With an aching head, Sam Jung passes out.

Dreaming…Sam Jung dreams that she’s in the coffin (before the lid is put on). Her maid returns, it’s Asanyeo. Sam Jung demands to what is happening. Asanyeo says they’ve switched bodies. She states the dream is the connection between them.  Asanyeo says mixing their blood in the censor made this possible. Sam Jung asks if she’s asleep. Asanyeo says their bodies have no soul while they are in this shared dream.

Sam Jung sleeps on the floor. The censor percolates. Asanyeo sleeps in front of the censor.

Back in the dream…Asanyeo informs Sam Jung that when she wakes, she’ll have Sam Jung’s soul and Sam Jung will be stuck in the dream forever.

That would be horrible news.

Assistant Ma finds the censor is missing.

She reports the censor theft to Hwi Chul and Oh Gong. Hwi Chul asks if Asanyeo could have stolen the censor. Assistant Ma assures Hwi Chul that she’s never let Asanyeo unattended. Oh Gong identifies those that have been in the house. He pauses after he lists the Fairy Ha. Hwi Chul asks why the Fairy Ha would steal the censor. Oh Gong knows the censor has Sam Jung’s blood and wonders what the Fairy Ha would want with it.

The obvious question is why didn’t they remove Sam Jung’s blood from the censor?

Back in the dream…Asanyeo informs Sam Jung if she sleeps in the coffin all will be peaceful. Asanyeo promises to take care of Sam Jung’s body and treat her Oh Gong well after they marry. Sam Jung declares she won’t enter the coffin and starts to call Oh Gong. Asanyeo interrupts and states Oh Gong will die if he enters the dream. Asanyeo drops the bombshell…Sam Jung and Oh Gong have a death bell fate. Sam Jung can’t believe it. Asanyeo shows her the death bell. Sam Jung declares it is a love bell. Asanyeo laughs. She clarifies the love bell is red, the death bell is black.

Sam Jung flashes back the grandson telling her the red bell was a love bell. She recalls him snatching the black bell from her. She remembers the black bell ringing as she looked at Oh Gong.

Asanyeo explains a death fate means one of them will die by the hands of the other. Sam Jung is in shock. Asanyeo states if Sam Jung returns then she either be killed by Oh Gong or she will kill Oh Gong. Asanyeo says the bracelet protects Sam Jung, so she’ll kill Oh Gong.

Sam Jung flashes back to the rooftop where she ordered Oh Gong to stop and physically hurt him in the process.  She recalls Oh Gong stating she’s the only one that could kill him. She recalls more including the statement that a fate cannot be avoided.

Sam Jung murmurs it was a death bell, not a love bell.

Assistant Ma reports that the Fairy Ha isn’t at the bar. She realizes General Frost is in control. PK tells her that he can’t find General Frost. He realizes he smelled the censor when General Frost and Asanyeo were together.

General Frost stands guard while Asanyeo sleeps in front of the percolating censor.

Back in the dream…Asanyeo tells Sam Jung the only way to cheat the death fate is to stay in the dream and sleep. She tells Sam Jung to choose, the death fate or sleep.

Assistant Ma informs Hwi Chul that General Frost stole the censor. Hwi Chul realizes that Asanyeo is using the censor with Sam Jung’s blood for nefarious reasons. Assistant Ma asks if Sam Jung is in peril. Hwi Chul retorts that Sam Jung would call Oh Gong if she was in peril. He tells Assistant Ma to find Asanyeo.

Oh Gong finds Sam Jung asleep on the floor. He can’t wake her. He realizes Asanyeo has created this situation. PK asks if Asanyeo has taken Sam Jung’s soul. Oh Gong understand this is a precarious situation. He doesn’t know where she is. PK wonders why Sam Jung hasn’t called him if she’s in danger.

Back in the dream…Sam Jung lays in the coffin and tear runs down her cheek. She’s chosen to save Oh Gong. Asanyeo puts the lid on the coffin.

Oh Gong cradles the sleeping Sam Jung and wonders where she is. He implores her to call him but Sam Jung sleeps on.

My Thoughts

Sam Jung sacrificed himself for Oh Gong. Sacrifice is definitely the theme of the second half of this show. Hwi Chul did it last episode. It is likely that Oh Gong will do it for Sam Jung. I’m enjoying Asanyeo. She’s a worthy opponent. Finally, we get some teamwork from the demons and concern for Sam Jung.

Son Oh Gong (Lee Seung Gi) may not be able thwart Asanyeo without a little help from his demon friends. The demons lack of caring about Sam Jung has bugged me from the beginning. But things are different now. Oh Gong openly cares for Sam Jung. Assistant Ma has a measure of caring for Sam Jung. I don’t fully believe Hwi Chul cares for Sam Jung. I’ll need proof. Oh Gong shocked his friends when he declared he would marry Sam Jung. Oh Gong cradled Sam Jung couldn’t help her. I felt for him. Oh Gong is my favorite character of this series. He has more smarts, depth, feeling and dare I say, humanity than the other demons.

Jin Sun Mi (Oh Yeon Seo) learned the love bell was really a death bell. Oh Gong decided not to tell Sam Jung the truth, so she was blind-sided when Asanyeo informed her the black bell was the death bell. Sam Jung loves Oh Gong. She’s willing to sacrifice herself to save Oh Gong. Asanyeo counted on that as she dangled two choices – death for or saving Oh Gong. Sam Jung’s heart overrides her brain. She wasn’t able to see beyond the threat. Maybe she had no power at that point and Asanyeo held all the cards. But Sam Jung isn’t a strategic thinker when the heart is involved. How will Oh Gong save her this time? Oh Yeon Seo looked beautiful in the wedding attire.

Woo Hwi Chul (Cha Seung Won) is temporarily blind. Hwi Chul didn’t realize that censor in his closet was a fake. He didn’t realize the smell of Sam Jung was on Asanyeo because the soul switch was underway. Thank goodness Assistant Ma is loyal and true. She’s willing to soothe his fears and ego. Can Hwi Chul help save Sam Jung or does his blindness sideline him?

Supporting characters contribute. Asanyeo knows a person’s Achilles heels and uses it to get what she wants. She used General Frost’s need to protect his sister, to force him to steal the censor. She used Sam Jung’s love for Oh Gong to convince her to choose an endless dream to save Oh Gong from their shared death fate. Lee Se Young has hit the mark with her portrayal of Asanyeo. She’s evil, direct, and covets Oh Gong. I don’t’ understand what Asanyeo intends for Mr. Kang. The Hong Sisters have finally delivered an excellent plot point.

Ranking the episode (on a scale from 1-10) had me rank this episode as terrific. My episode ranking chart is below.

Honestly, I loved the way Oh Gong blundered with his boasting of being desired, just like your typical guy wanting to show off in front of his girl would, but he went and amended it, and proclaimed that he has fallen for the Human, beyond GGG and everything else. I also got quite emotional reading that when Oh Gong, who has confessed his love so many times, shallowly and then truly, wanted to hear it once from her, but she only reminded him of their unfortunate Fate. She stabbed him with a blade she didn’t know she was holding while being heartfelt and not ready to profess the three words themselves (and in a way, she said even more than that – I was fated to love you, perhaps I always did.).

I think this (the mention of her humanity) is good tie in to the fact that between Ah Sa Nyeo and Sun Mi who are in some ways indeed foils to each other, Sun Mi has the upper hand of still retaining the stubborn and kind heart of human that sways others in ways no one else can.

The ending of it all left me both having lot of emotions (because recall how he said that she who does not want to die has no worth to him and now she is the most precious being in all universe to him and he’s begging her to call him just so she’d live… his cruel words are coming back to slap him, one by one. Will ‘the world’s fate doesn’t matter, only the fact I love you does’ be next on the list?) and kinda miffed.

Tumblr didn’t help much on that aspect either! But reading all these posts that are either dissing Sun Mi for being weak and damsel in distress or praising her because she’s naturally unselfish and has very strong heart, I think I realized where my slight beef with the situation and how I can come to peace with it.

Someone said that swooning over Oh Gong’s devotion to do anything to save his beloved and dissing Sun Mi doing exactly the same is misogynistic and maybe it is, but for many times, we’ve seen Oh Gong outwit his opponents to escape from situations without actually signing up for dying/sleep of eternity to save Sun Mi. (Like when Ah Sa Nyeo charmed his monkey minion instead of him.)

So, yes, maybe I wanted to see Sun Mi do that. To outshine demons at their games and remind us how much she can shine. But we cannot forget that Oh Gong has lived 10 000 years and dealt with countless demons and deities and is the Monkey king, he simply has so much more advantage in outwitting department than our Sun Mi, the human. So, this adds an angle for me through which I accept and understand both her actions and my mixed feelings on this.

And so, my wishlist for Hwayugi gets another bullet-point: for Sun Mi to outwit a demon and leave Oh Gong stunned-speechless and hearteyed af.

    • I loved the way Oh Gong blundered with his boasting of being desired, just like your typical guy wanting to show off in front of his girl would
It was a cute moment. What guy doesn’t want to brag?

She stabbed him with a blade she didn’t know she was holding while being heartfelt and not ready to profess the three words themselves (and in a way, she said even more than that – I was fated to love you, perhaps I always did.).
      Perfectly put.

the mention of her humanity) is good tie in to the fact that between Ah Sa Nyeo and Sun Mi who are in some ways indeed foils to each other
      Spot on assessment.

recall how he said that she who does not want to die has no worth to him and now she is the most precious being in all universe to him and he’s begging her to call him just so she’d live… his cruel words are coming back to slap him, one by one. Will ‘the world’s fate doesn’t matter, only the fact I love you does’ be next on the list?
Agree that his flippant words are haunting him. I do think he believes he can best fate, but can he?

I wanted to see Sun Mi do that. To outshine demons at their games and remind us how much she can shine. But we cannot forget that Oh Gong has lived 10 000 years and dealt with countless demons and deities and is the Monkey king, he simply has so much more advantage in outwitting department than our Sun Mi, the human. So, this adds an angle for me through which I accept and understand both her actions and my mixed feelings on this
You raise a good point. While I stated her heart overrides her brain, perhaps that is her true strength and the power of their mutual love will defeat their fate.

my wishlist for Hwayugi gets another bullet-point: for Sun Mi to outwit a demon and leave Oh Gong stunned-speechless and hearteyed
It would be fun to see her impress him.

  2. Jane Tilly says:

It’s too bad, it took Hwi Chul 🐂 being blind to make him into a team player, but I suppose it could be due to him having finally accomplished ended hid lady love’s💕 punishment.

That stinkin’ death 💀🔔 bell came knelling to strike Oh Mi’s 🐒🌂 relationship and as a threat from Na Sa Nyeo 🌹. Imberreader was spot-on about Sun Mi 🌂 “stabbed him [Oh Gong 🐒] with a blade [the fate of the death bell] she didn’t know [thinking it was a love 💖🔔 bell] she was holding while being heartfelt and not ready to profess the three words themselves”. In a way I’m glad Oh Gong 🐒 experienced the disingenuous feeling of a love confession due to “fate”; don’t get me wrong, I believe Sun Mi 🌂 genuinely loves him. I recall the all the times Sun Mi 🌂 felt less than convinced of Oh Gong’s 🐒 love proclaimations under the influence of the GGG. ALL of us want declarations of love to be without guile or obligation; it took a while for Oh Gong’s 🐒 declarations to become genuine and now Sun Mi’s 🌂 declaration needs to feel genuine to him.

“Sun Mi [🌂] has the upper hand of still retaining the stubborn and kind heart [💖] of human that sways others in ways no one else can.” -imberreader.

You have a valid point about Sun Mi’s 🌂 humanity being her biggest strength. I keep hoping Bu Ja’s 🚶‍♀️💀 humanity will be a strength to overcome An Sa Nyeo’s 🌹 possession. Which begs the question: if the souls of Sun Mi and An Sa Nyeo 🌹 are out of their bodies, why doesn’t Bu Ja 🚶‍♀️💀 take back control of her body and at least try to thwart An Sa Nyeo❓⁉️. I would like the Winter 🌬️ General to turn on An Sa Nyeo 🌹 and work with Oh Gong 🐒 or someone else to undermine the evil priestess. While I understand the Winter 🌬️ General is protecting his sister, the Summer🔆 Fairy, he is acting contrary to his usual staying out of the fray of the bickering among the vainglorious demons, it troubles me to see this kind, sweet 🍭 soul be used by Na Sa Nyeo. Since the Winter 🌬️ General betrayed Oh Gong 🐒, will he pay with his life❓⁉️

I concur with imberreader “my wishlist for Hwayugi gets another bullet-point: for Sun Mi to outwit a demon and leave Oh Gong stunned-speechless and hearteyed” 😍.

I REALLY WANT Sun Mi 🌂 to call Oh Gong 🐒 to rescue her, but I don’t think she will take the risk of putting her man in jeopardy.

I don’t think Oh Gong 🐒 will be fooled by An Sa Nyeo 🌹 if/when she possesses Sun Mi’s 🌂 body.
