Hwayugi Episode 10 Recap
Jin Sun Mi (Oh Yeon Seo) dreams that she and Oh Gong will never be. Woo Hwi Chul (Cha Seung Won) and Assistant Ma find her and she stirs. She explains the demon took her younger self into the book. Hwi Chul declares Sun Mi is no longer Sam Jung. He tells her she got what she wanted, she’s now an ordinary human. He says they have no reason to see each other again. He and Assistant Ma bid Sun Mi good bye. Sun Mi can’t believe that she’s an ordinary human.
Hwi Chul and Assistant Ma realize that the bracelet controlling Oh Gong is now under the demon’s purview.
Son Oh Gong (Lee Seung Gi) realizes because the young Sun Mi is trapped in a book, the demon was able to call him. The demon smiles and says she’s his new owner. She declares he’ll love her now. Oh Gong chuckles at the new twist he’s been dealt.
The elder and Hwi Chul discuss the situation. Hwi Chul assumes that Oh Gong’s love for Sun Mi is over and he’ll now love the demon. The elder suggests that the bracelet’s powers could have been activated by Sun Mi (the human) NOT Sam Jung (who has special abilities). Hwi Chul scoffs that the bracelet could only have been activated by Sam Jung. The elder says only Hwi Chul knows if his affections have been transferred to the demon.
The demon isn’t pleased that Oh Gong refuses to be her slave. She declares he’ll never find the book the young Sam Jung is trapped in. Only Sun Mi can reverse this, the demon states. But Sun Mi won’t reverse it, she’s wanted this too long. Oh Gong agrees Sun Mi won’t want to reverse the situation. He’s flippant about the situation. The demon can’t believe he doesn’t want to reverse the situation. Oh Gong counters he’s happy about the situation. Only one person controls the bracelet and it isn’t the demon. He advises her to hide the book with a young Sam Jung well. He warns her if she calls him again, he’ll kill her. The demon can’t believe she didn’t get the power of the bracelet.
General Frost sees the sister and asks how she escaped the book. She won’t talk. He asks her to come with him.
The businessman has taken Bu Ja’s body to the stairwell. He can’t believe she upped and died. He calls his assistant to help. When he turns around, Bu Ja’s body is gone. He finds her glove. He wonders where she went.
PK (Lee Hong Ki) and Alice (possessed by the Jade Dragon) discuss their fake romance. He doesn’t want to add fuel to the fire, she not adverse. PK is shocked to see Bu Ja’s body slumped against a car and rushes to her side. Bu Ja stirs and says she feels weird. Alice says she stinks.
Assistant Lee asks how Sun Mi knew there would be a fire in the brother’s apartment. She doesn’t answer. Assistant Lee asks why Oh Gong didn’t come to her rescue. Sun Mi comments that he used to come without prompting but not anymore.
At home, Sun Mi wonders if she’s really happy now that Oh Gong, Hwi Chul, et al. are gone from her life. She calls Oh Gong. He doesn’t appear. She yells his name. He doesn’t appear. Sun Mi isn’t happy at this part of not being Sam Jung.
Hwi Chul and Assistant Ma visit the demon. They present her the contract for signature (so she’ll use her powers direct Oh Gong so Hwi Chul will get deity points).
Sun Mi goes to Hwi Chul’s house and asks to see Oh Gong. He congratulates her on becoming human. He asks why she came. Sun Mi asks him confirm that he won’t come when she calls and he won’t protect her. Oh Gong retorts that ordinary humans aren’t hunted by demons and he won’t come when she calls. He tells her to live a good life. Sun Mi asks why he’s still wearing the bracelet. She asks if he still loves her. He tells her she doesn’t look pretty anymore. That blow hits Sun Mi’s heart. She lies this is all for the best. She leaves. Oh Gong doesn’t watch her go.
Hwi Chul can’t believe that the bracelet’s powers did not transfer to the demon. Hwi Chul is not happy that Oh Gong is still ensnared by Sun Mi.
Oh Gong cries, coping with Sun Mi’s departure. His brother confirms Sun Mi is gone. Oh Gong declares he managed to fool Sun Mi though it was hard. Oh Gong’s brother agrees that if he can free himself from the contract, given the situation. Oh Gong agrees and clutches his hurting heart. His brother asks how he’ll handle Hwi Chul. Oh Gong guesses the Hwi Chul will beg for his help. His brother agrees that Hwi Chul won’t want to lose Oh Gong’s ability so he can rack up deity points. Oh Gong marvels at Sun Mi’s control during their conversation. He believes she doesn’t love him and never did. He asks his brother not to mention her again. Knowing his brother is in pain, he doesn’t tell Oh Gong that Sun Mi left the house crying. Oh Gong clutches his aching heart.
Hwi Chul and Assistant Ma question Sun Mi about her meeting with Oh Gong. Sun Mi informs them she’s no longer Sam Jung and apparently the bracelet has been transferred too because Oh Gong declared he won’t come when she calls. Hwi Chul says she’ll have to pay a penalty now that she can’t fulfill her contract. Sun Mi asks if Oh Gong loves the demon now. Hwi Chul hedges then says it is likely that Oh Gong will love the demon now.
As they leave, Assistant Ma asks Hwi Chul why he lied to Sun Mi. Hwi Chul retorts that now that Sun Mi is a human, she’s worthless to him and he’s angry about that. He declines Assistant Ma’s offer to kill Sun Mi. Hwi Chul declares that only Oh Gong knows who controls the bracelet. He vows to find out.
Hwi Chul arrives at Oh Gong’s house bearing a bottle of wine. Oh Gong is packing to leave. Hwi Chul asks about Sam Jung. Oh Gong retorts that Sam Jung isn’t embodied in Sun Mi anymore. Hwi Chul comments that Oh Gong is still wearing the bracelet. He wonders if Oh Gong will be able to cope with Sun Mi falling in love and marrying someone else. Oh Gong admits he loves Sun Mi. Excited, Hwi Chul urges Oh Gong to turn Sun Mi back into Sam Jung so they’ll be bound once again. Oh Gong agrees that is an option, but he only wants her to live the ordinary life she dreamed of. Oh Gong declares his pain is irrelevant. Oh Gong admits this is hurting him, but Sun Mi’s happiness is all that matter. Hwi Chul realizes that Oh Gong truly loves Sun Mi. He gets teary and offers to help Oh Gong pack. Oh Gong suggests that Hwi Chul travel with him. Hwi Chul refuses and they chuckle. Oh Gong offers Hwi Chul a bottle of alcohol as a parting gift. They laugh as Oh Gong guides Hwi Chul’s selection.
Nice scene! That was a bromance moment! I’m thrilled that Hwi Chul tapped into his emotions and felt Oh Gong’s pain.
General Frost tells the elder he can’t get the children trapped in the books out of his head. The elder reminds him they can’t do anything to the demon because Sam Jung is trapped in one of the books. General Frost shows the silent sister that won’t share how she escaped. He complains about the evil the little girl suffered. The elder counters that evil in humans is what eventually makes a demon. He asks about Sun Mi and Oh Gong. The elder declares Sun Mi doesn’t want to be Sam Jung and Oh Gong doesn’t want to be a guardian. It’s over.
Sun Mi stares at the death bell which she believes is a love bell and scolds herself that her love to Oh Gong is over, it’s time to move on and be human.
Oh Gong stares at the suitcase and tells himself to leave and stop the pain of not having Sun Mi in his life. But he thinks about the woman he loves and can’t bring himself to pack.
The book with a young Sam Jung glows on the bookshelf.
Bu Ja is in a bad way, she’s afraid she’ll rot away. PK assures her he’ll find a way. Alice stares wishing PK would look at her that way. Assistant Ma says without Sam Jung to intervene, Bu Ja could turn into an evil spirit and they must burn her. PK is livid at the suggestion. Assistant Ma says Hwi Chul will burn her. PK clams down and says he’ll take care of it. PK seethes that this is all Sam Jung’s fault.
Sam Jung and Assistant Lee visit building that is considered haunted. Sam Jung enters alone to prove she’s an ordinary human. Worried, Assistant Lee follows her. Armed with her trusty yellow umbrella, Sun Mi can’t see the demons right in front of them without being Sam Jung. Sun Mi tells Assistant Lee they will no longer deal in haunted houses. Assistant Lee is thrilled with the news. They leave.
Oh Gong’s brother tells Oh Gong that his car is packed and ready to go. Oh Gong’s brother surprised that Hwi Chul let him leave due to the contract. Oh Gong says Hwi Chul is a soft touch for a sad love story. Oh Gong’s brother says Hwi Chul has lived with the pain of a lost love. Oh Gong’s brother urges him to verify he’s left nothing behind.
Hwi Chul tells Sun Mi that Oh Gong is leaving. She’s surprised he’ll be gone 50 years. Hwi Chul asks Sun Mi for the bracelet’s activation method. She doesn’t want to reactivate it so he can love another woman. Hwi Chul presses for the information citing he needs the deity points. Sun Mi refuses to tell him and leaves. Assistant Ma offers to torture the information out of Sun Mi. Hwi Chul declines. Assistant Ma says she’ll pump Fairy Ha for the activation method.
Sun Mi is surprised to find Oh Gong in her office. He states he came to say goodbye. He asks if she wants him to stay. Sun Mi refuses to say what her heart wants. Oh Gong chuckles that the young Sun Mi was clingy but the adult Sun Mi is not. Sun Mi tells Oh Gong to say goodbye to the young Sam Jung at the bookstore. Sun Mi asks if he feels for the demon who she believes controls the bracelet. Oh Gong hopes that means she still cares. But Sun Mi pretends she doesn’t care. Oh Gong says a demon is stuck to her. Sun Mi declines his offer to remove it. Both of them irritated, Oh Gong snatches the money stuffed animal and leaves.
It’s so obvious they both care but refuse to admit it. Sigh…
Assistant Lee brings the director into the office and is surprised to see Oh Gong. The director introduces himself. Oh Gong waves the stuff monkey at him. Assistant Lee waves goodbye and takes the food into Sun Mi’s office. Oh Gong positions the monkey so it can see in the office and leaves.
Sun Mi is depressed at Oh Gong’s departure. The demon watches the men eat and creates mishaps when the director asks her out. Sun Mi realizes Oh Gong is at play.
Sure enough, Oh Gong thanks the demon for helping out and sends him away.
Sun Mi storms out of her office looking for Oh Gong. She finds him. They stare at each other. Sun Mi apologizes for not being gracious when he came to say goodbye. She wishes him well. That makes him mad and he can’t hide it. He complains that he’s suffering but she only offers a pat goodbye. Sun Mi counters that everything he felt was forced by the bracelet. Oh Gong counters that she’ll live a boring life. Sun Mi counters that boring is better than the tortured life she led because she met him. Oh Gong counters that she’ll live a happy boring life with other happy boring people. He stalks away. Sun Mi wants to call to him but doesn’t.
It’s so obvious they both care but refuse to admit it. Sigh…
PK goes to the magic store but there isn’t anything to help Bu Ja. The grandson suggests he feed Bu Ja a human.
Bu Ja takes the medicine PK has and tells him to burn her. PK says he’ll find away.
PK drives furious at Sam Jung. He mutters this is all her fault.
The director asks Sun Mi if she’d like to take a walk. Sun Mi sees the brother she saved from the book demon. She wonders if the demon is still a threat to him. The director notices that Sun Mi doesn’t have her yellow umbrella. Sun Mi smiles and says she no longer needs it. They smile at the memory when she saved him from the demons. The director tells her she was cool, classy and his hero. They both look at the brother. The director says the boy needs saving too.
Lovely scene. The director accepts Sun Mi for who she is and who she was. He is kind and considerate. It’s wonderful to see Sun Mi supported by a friend (and that’s all he’ll ever be).
The brother asks Sun Mi to see his sister and help her. Sun Mi says she no longer can see his sister. The boy sighs.
Oh Gong looks at the sister and comments that General Frost hasn’t been sleeping because of her. General Frost confirms he’s stayed in this form (instead of transforming into Fairy Ha) to keep the girl at ease. He asks Oh Gong to look after her while he goes to the ice cream shop. Oh Gong uses a sing song tone that he won’t. That gets the sister’s attention. She smiles at Oh Gong and he smiles back. General Frost leaves. Oh Gong tells the sister he won’t be at her beck and call.
Hwi Chul asks the book demon to sign the contract. Of course, she’ll have to give up stealing children and release their souls. The demon refuses to release the children. Hwi Chul says the children can never be reborn trapped in the books. The demon counters the children are better off in the fairy tells.
Hwi Chul complains to Assistant Ma that his plan didn’t work. Assistant Ma tells Hwi Chul that Bu Ja collapsed as soon as Sam Jung left Sun Mi. Assistant Ma states PK will handle the situation. Hwi Chul comments that PK can be a hothead.
When Sun Mi returns to the office, PK is there and Assistant Lee is thrilled to have spent time with him. Sun Mi asks why PK is there. PK schools his expression and claims that Bu Ja would like to see her. Sun Mi is pleased to hear that.
PK drives Sun Mi to the parking garage. He says Bu Ja is in his van. He says he’ll get snacks and tells her go the van.
Inside the van, Bu Ja is transforming to an evil spirit.
A car enters the parking garage. PK knows that it is Hwi Chul. PK shoves Sun Mi into the van. Hwi Chul demands to know what PK is doing. PK yells that Bu Ja needs to eat a human. The van rocks. Hwi Chul yells that Bu Ja will turn into an evil spirit if she eats Sun Mi. They hear a scream. Hwi Chul opens the van to find Sun Mi stroking an apologetic Bu Ja.
As PK tends to Bu Ja, Sun Mi asks if anything can be done for Bu Ja. Hwi Chul says without Sam Jung’s blood (recall Sam Jung’s blood butterfly that made Bu Ja’s corpse come to life), Bu Ja will deteriorate. Hwi Chul says that Sam Jung is stuck in a book. Sun Mi asks when the demon will release the children in the books. Hwi Chul reports the demon refuses to release the children. Sun Mi says the demon must be dealt with. Hwi Chul counters that because the demon controls the bracelet, he’s going to offer a contract to rack up deity points. Sun Mi can’t believe that Oh Gong will have to protect an evil spirit. Sun Mi isn’t happy. Hwi Chul tells her it is none of her concern anymore.
Oh Gong asks the sister how she escaped the book. She asks him to protect her brother if she tells. Oh Gong recalls a young Sun Mi asking for protection. Oh Gong tells the sister someone else once made a similar request but he reneged. He regrets that choice. He wonders if he should make the promise and keep it this time.
Assistant Ma asks if Hwi Chul’s plan was to incite Sun Mi to find the book with her younger self. Hwi Chul confirms that only Sun Mi can find the book. He recalls the book demon saying whenever a child wants to exit the book, they can. Hwi Chul says if Sun Mi wants to extract Sam Jung from the book, she can.
Sun Mi arrives at the bookstore. She tells the demon she’ll find her book. The demon encourages her to try.
Oh Gong arrives at the bookstore. He’s surprised to see Sun Mi searching for her book. She tells him she wants her book. She asks if he came to help. He confirms this. The relief is evident on Sun Mi’s face. She admits she was sad knowing he’d never come to her again. She declares that Oh Gong belongs to her. She goes to kiss him. Oh Gong puts a finger on her lips and asks if she thought he’d fall for this trick twice. Ha! He pushes her away. We see it isn’t Sun Mi but the book demon! The demon mutters she was ready to use the activation method Hwi Chul told her. Oh Gong can’t believe that Sun Mi blabbed that the activation method was a kiss. The book demon laughs that both Oh Gong and Sun Mi denied wanting the book, but they both came.
On alert, Oh Gong asks if Sun Mi is in the bookstore. The demon takes Oh Gong to where Sun Mi sleeps next to her book. The demon declares that Sun Mi isn’t able to exit the book (Peter Pan). Oh Gong picks up the book. The demon warns that only she and Sun Mi can open the book. Oh Gong orders her to open the book. The demon declares she saves children. Oh Gong declares she traps children. He explains the sister once in book requested his help to protect her brother from being trapped in a book. Oh Gong declares that the book demon is a monster and the sister figured it out and was able to escape. The demon claims she’s not a monster. Oh Gong keeps piling it on calling her an evil spirit that feed off of children. Tears well as the demon declares she’s not evil. As she screams that she loves the children she explodes. All the books glow and the children escape.
Terrific scene! Oh Gong at his knight in shining armor best!
Oh Gong looks at Sun Mi and opens her book. He asks her to come back.
Sweet! That was almost swoon worthy!
Sun Mi dreams and sees her younger self playing with other children. They see each other. Sun Mi says they need to leave. Sun Mi promises the fairy the reneged on the promise will keep it now. Sun Mi says they need never be scared and alone again. She holds out her hand to her younger self who takes it. Sun Mi wakes. Oh Gong is there. She smiles and says she returned because she wanted to. Oh Gong apologizes with sincerity. She accepts his apology. They smile.
Yes! Super! Progress!
Assistant Lee asks the brother why he’s alone at the office. The brother cries that he wants to be with his sister. Assistant Lee promises to help. The brother cries harder. Assistant Lee hugs him. The sister’s spirit hovers and disappears.
Bu Ja wakes fresh as a daisy.
Hwi Chul wakes and wants to eat Sam Jung. He’s thrilled!
Oh Gong tells Sun Mi that he was almost tricked into activating the bracelet. Sun Mi asks if the owner of the bracelet changed. Oh Gong asks if Sun Mi was worried. Sun Mi admits she was worried. Oh Gong says the bracelet was hers always. He grouses that she pretended not to care and upset him. Oh Gong declares she’s his only owner. Sun Mi smiles and states she’s the only one that can call him. Oh Gong smiles and agrees.
Sun Mi asks if they need to reactivate the bracelet. She stares at him. She kisses him. She mutters “activated”.
Oh Gong counters that wasn’t sufficient. He plants a kiss on her lips and means it.
As Oh Gong pulls away, Sun Mi hears the bell ring. Of course, she thinks it is the love bell.
They kiss again.
Emotions were rampant this episode and I LOVED it. Sun Mi felt the pain over losing Oh Gong. PK felt the pain of a deteriorating Bu Ja. Oh Gong felt the pain of Sun Mi not wanting him. Hwi Chul understood Oh Gong’s pain over losing Sun Mi. General Frost was worried about the sister. We are halfway through the series, and this episode finally delivered what we’ve wanted…more emotions without the smoke screen of the bracelet and posturing.
Son Oh Gong (Lee Seung Gi) kept mum that Sun Mi was still the bracelet’s owner. I was thrilled to see his naked need for Sun Mi. He was hurt when she lied that she didn’t want him. Oh Gong’s brother sweetly took care of him. Even Hwi Chul let Oh Gong off the hook of the demon catching contract knowing Oh Gong was hurting. I loved not only Oh Gong’s naked need for Sun Mi but his kindness to the sister. He clicked with her once again. He realized that he’d failed Sun Mi and reneged on his promise to protect her. He felt genuine remorse. My swoon moment of the episode was Oh Gong’s heartfelt plea for Sun Mi to come back to him. Yes, the kiss was good, but in that “come back to me” moment we saw his love. As the bell tolls we know Oh Gong will sacrifice himself to save Sun Mi. But that’s another episode in the future, so I won’t fret about that today. Instead I’m relishing the moment, the love, the connection between the actors, etc. Folks, this is the nirvana moment for me in this series!
Jin Sun Mi (Oh Yeon Seo) lived the manifestation of “be careful what you wish for, you might get it”. Initially she enjoyed being normal. But things started to rankle. All the demons didn’t care anymore. Oh Gong was ready to leave her. She couldn’t stand the book demon being able to call Oh Gong. She couldn’t stand Oh Gong protecting someone other than her. When Sun Mi met her younger self in the dream, she told herself that the feckless fairy would protect them forever and they need never be alone again. Lovely moment. And when Sun Mi awoke, Oh Gong was there. She declared he was hers. She shyly suggested the bracelet be activated and gave him a quick kiss. I loved her “activated” line. But Oh Gong wanted more and took her lips with passion.
Woo Hwi Chul (Cha Seung Won) wanted to get someone to help him rack up deity points with Sam Jung out of the picture. Hwi Chul was willing to ignore Sun Mi but when he learned the book demon didn’t control Oh Gong, he returned to Sun Mi. He effectively needled her into taking action to reclaim herself. I especially loved the understanding Hwi Chul showed Oh Gong when he was hurting over the loss of Sun Mi. Hwi Chul knows loss and felt empathy. I’ve wanted a real bromance between these characters. The silly one-upping each other was growing tiresome. Finally, the Hong Sisters wrote an interaction between Oh Gong and Hwi Chul that had meaning.
Supporting characters contribute. I loved when Assistant Ma offered to off those that didn’t please Hwi Chul. PK’s reaction to Bu Ja’s deterioration was more than brotherly. Alice/Jade Dragon knew it and wasn’t pleased. PK decided that if Sam Jung was available to keep Bu Ja alive, then Sun Mi could be eaten by Bu Ja. But Hwi Chul intervened even though the women worked it out amongst themselves. What is the point of the Jade Dragon?
Ranking the episode (on a scale from 1-10) had me rank this episode as excellent. My episode ranking chart is below.
