Money Flower Episode 17

My Thoughts: Money Flower Episode 17

Cast of Characters with Nutshell Details

Yoon Seo Won (Han So Hee), the mother of Boo Cheon’s son, sees a new side Boo Cheon when he visits her. He sends their son out of the suite so they can have a private conversation. Seo Won sits and waits for Boo Cheon to make his point. He does so by extracting a knife and plunging into a pillow right next to Seo Won. With calm directness Boo Cheon warns that now is the time to decide NOT to hold the press conference and embarrass him. Shocked and scared, Seo Won agrees to Boo Cheon’s demands. She calls Yeo Cheon’s father and states that Boo Cheon begged her not to hold the press conference and she agreed.

Jang Boo Cheon (Jang Seung Jo) can’t believe it…he threatened Seo Won with a knife to keep the power of the presidency in his grasp. When he gets home he sobs in his car. His biological father, the chauffeur, longs to comfort him but cannot. Boo Cheon goes to see Pil Joo’s right-hand man. Obviously, there is no love between the two of them. Boo Cheon says that Pil Joo has trained him to reach for the presidency that that is his purpose in life. He warns he will not be deterred.

Jang Kook Hwan (Lee Soon Jae) learns that his grandson, Yeo Cheon, played a part in the press conference to reveal Boo Cheon’s baby mamma. Livid that this petty ploy to discredit Boo Cheon would have negative ramifications on his company, he orders Yeo Cheon reassigned to a remote tree factory. Yeo Cheon can’t believe he’s been banished and asks Grandfather to reconsider. But there is no greater sin than damaging the company which in essence is a manifestation of Grandfather. Boo Cheon feels a twinge of sympathy for Yeo Cheon but knows he cannot show leniency. When Yeo Cheon offers him unsolicited advice to be wary of Pil Joo, Boo Cheon bristles. Chairman Jang receives a visit from his son and Yeo Cheon begging for leniency, but he does not waver in his decision. You can practically see Pil Joo think “one down, but still a long way to go”.

Jung Mal Ran (Lee Mi Sook) is surprised when Mo Hyun is reported to have a locket her husband gave his illegitimate son. She orders Mo Hyun to bring the locket to her. Reluctantly Mo Hyun does so after Pil Joo text her the location in his living quarters. Mal Ran notices Mo Hyun’s attachment to the locket and queries how she came by it. Mo Hyun explains it was on a school trip by a lake. Mal Ran tells Mo Hyun she can have the locket after she gives birth to her grandson. Later Boo Cheon burns with desire to have the locket meant for Pil Joo and asks Mal Ran for the locket from his father. Mal Ran gives the locket to Boo Cheon stating while the locket was intended for Eun Cheon, now that he’s dead, Boo Cheon should own it. Boo Cheon seethes knowing that Eun Cheon isn’t dead but very much alive in the form of Pil Joo. He worries that once truth is revealed his mother will collapse.

Na Mo Hyun (Park Se Young) is surprised when Pil Joo admits that he is Eun Cheon, the illegitimate eldest grandson. He promises to tell her all when she’s ready. Mo Hyun wants the story straight away but they are interrupted. Finally, Pil Joo finds her during her lunch hour. When Boo Cheon calls her, Pil Joo takes her phone and says that he’s told Boo Cheon that he’s going to be honest with her. Willing to ignore her husband’s phone call, they eat. Pil Joo takes her to his secret lair to confess all. Mo Hyun is shocked at the room behind the bookcase. Pil Joo warns her to brace herself, she’ll hate him soon enough.

Kang Pil Joo (Jang Hyuk) remains unaware that his birth secret has been discovered by Boo Cheon. Mal Ran complains that Pil Joo has proven sympathetic to Seo Won again. She shares that she gave Eun Cheon’s locket to Boo Cheon. Pil Joo clinches his jaw irked that his necklace is held by Boo Cheon. Pil Joo masterfully dispatches Yeo Cheon, Boo Cheon’s rival. But he can’t get Mo Hyun out of his mind. He realizes confessing his part in manipulating her marriage will force a breech between them. He shocks Boo Cheon when he calls and reports he’s going to tell Mo Hyun the truth about the beginning of their relationship. Boo Cheon sputters in shock not to do it but Pil Joo hangs up on him and ignores Boo Cheon’s subsequent phone calls. Pil Joo takes Mo Hyun to his secret lair, trusting her with this secret. Pil Joo reveals the surveillance pictures he took of Mo Hyun and admits he manipulated their initial meeting and coached Boo Cheon to win her heart. Pil Joo lies that he once cared for her but no more. Mo Hyun finally feels anger at Pil Joo’s machinations and she slaps him twice. Then she remembers the day she slapped the young Pil Joo after saving him from suicide and when he intentionally tried to drown himself. Mo Hyun realizes this man in all his aliases – Pil Joo, In Jo, Eun Cheon – is the man she loves and risked to save. She slaps herself calling herself an idiot. Pil Joo grabs her hands to stop her from striking herself again. Mo Hyun admits she didn’t want to lose him when she saved him long ago, he meant that much. When they lost touch, she hoped and prayed he was well. They met again and her prayers were answered. Then when he was in the coma after the accident, she realized she didn’t want to lose him again. She wishes that he’d let her die in the accident so she didn’t have to know this ugly truth about her marriage and his machinations. He stares at the woman he loves who is riddled with pain that he caused. He takes her into his arms and hugs her.

My Thoughts

Boo Cheon summons his inner cruel guy and threatens Seo Won with a knife. Color me surprised, that Boo Cheon took the knife that a young Pil Joo once threatened his mother with to threaten Seo Won. It rocked him to his core but he accepted his actions after he dealt with the emotions. He even coolly returned the knife to his mother’s drawer in front of his mother and Pil Joo. Mal Ran was thoroughly shocked by that and immediately worried that her son was stepping into dark waters. My feelings for Boo Cheon are muddled. While I like him at times, now that he represents a threat to Pil Joo (that Pil Joo doesn’t realize is there), I’m no longer lured by his charm. Boo Cheon hardened his heart right before our eyes due to greed and jealously. It wasn’t a pretty sight and tarnished this character, perhaps forever.

Mo Hyun learns the truth about Pil Joo. Color me surprised that Pil Joo trusted Mo Hyun enough to admit his birth secret and share his secret lair with her. Mo Hyun could annihilate Pil Joo with what she knows and it makes me nervous. I was surprised when she slapped herself after slapping Pil Joo. I’m surprised that her youthful love for Pil Joo and saving his life earned Pil Joo a “get out of jail card” with his actions that torpedoed Mo Hyun’s life. Frankly I can’t imagine having a similar reaction, and I struggle to accept her logic.

Pil Joo gives Mo Hyun power when he admits all. Color me surprised when Pil Joo admitted his birth surprise. Color me surprise when Pil Joo took Mo Hyun to his secret lair and admitted all. Granted he expected that her reaction would sever Mo Hyun’s feelings for him, but he was wrong. Color me AND Pil Joo surprised by her reaction when she started slapping herself. When Pil Joo stared into her painfilled eyes and realized he was the source of that pain, did he decide to accept responsibility for Mo Hyun? Can she be trusted? Can Pil Joo trust himself around her? Their not so secret looks practically screamed their feelings for each other. Finally, it is totally bugging me that Pil Joo HAS NO CLUE that Boo Cheon knows his birth secret. I’ve watched this show from the start and have reveled in Pil Joo’s near perfect record at anticipating what would happen next. But Mo Hyun may be his kryptonite because he doesn’t realize Boo Cheon’s actions add up to knowing his birth secret. Boo Cheon visiting his right-hand man was extraordinarily out of character but Pil Joo didn’t seem fazed. Wake up Pil Joo! Boo Cheon’s greed and jealousy has put a target on your back. Your blindness is driving me nuts. Writer Lee Myung-Hee, if you wanted me worried that the once invincible Pil Joo was going to take another fall, mission accomplished.

Ranking the episodes (on a scale from 1-10) had me rank this episode as very good. My episode ranking chart is below.

The fifth song of the OST “Waiting Here for You” is sung by Min Kyung Hoon. Per allkpop the song is “written by Hana and composed by Victor Lundberg, is the 5th OST to be released for the drama. It’s a medium tempo pop-rock track that serves as the theme for the male protagonist Jang Pil Joo (played by Jang Hyuk) and his feelings for Na Mo Hyun (Park Se Young).” Check it out below:

@kjt – I’m surprised that you ranked ep17 below the others. For me,I feel like we’re finally getting this show on the road.

What is the deal with Scabs keeping teenaged Pil joo’s knife like a family keepsake? And what’s with Baby Boo taking it out to scare Seo won? They don’t have any other knives around Mushywon? Or am I missing a deeper meaning like it’s there to keep Pil joo on his leash as evidence in a past crime or to use to frame him for a new crime? (The finger prints would be lonnnng gone by now.) somebody clue me in?

    • Beez, that ranking is subjective and a gut check of how engaged I was during the episode. Sometimes I’m more gripped while watching than other times. I am nervous for Pil Joo with Boo Cheon knowing the truth.

Interesting observation on the knife and storing it in a prominent place (right hand drawer). Boo Cheon using the knife was another step into the ruthless dark side, where Mal Ran lives. I hate to say it but Pil Joo lives there too. Mal Ran keeping the knife is likely a reminder to Pil Joo and herself that he is willing to strike out. It probably turns Mal Ran on.

“it probably turns Mal ran on.” kjt
LOLOLOL even more funny because it’s probably true. Scabs is one sick Viper lady.

The difference in Pil joo’s dark side and the rest of that Mushywon nest full of vipers is they are motivated (to the point of murder) by money. I don’t believe money is Pil joo’s motivator other than the power it has to get his vengeance. But I believe if the Vipers were not rich but valued something else then THAT would be what Pil joo uses against them. I just don’t think his mindset is “I’m the rightful heir so the conglomerate should be mine”, but rather his thought process is “y’all murdering pigs killed my brother and grieved my mother unto death”.

Picture this, if Scabs had not murdered Pil joo’s brother, Pil joo’s bio dad still would’ve died (I think – did they ever say what caused his car accident (I think it was a car accident? )) – sorry *digressing* – wouldn’t Pil joo’s family have lived out their lives on whatever stipend Ol’ Git would’ve given them to stay out of sight/out of mind?

And while we’re talking about unexplained, in detail, deaths – how did Pil joo’s mom die?

Well stated. If Mal Jan hadn’t tried to murder Pil Joo’s mother, brother, him, then he wouldn’t be on this vengeance quest.

wouldn’t Pil joo’s family have lived out their lives on whatever stipend Ol’ Git would’ve given them to stay out of sight/out of mind?
I’m not sure there was a stipend or not. I’d like to know the timeframe of events. Did Mal Ran order the hit on Pil Joo’s family AFTER his biological father died? Was she sweeping away the Illegitimate heirs in a single stroke?

And while we’re talking about unexplained, in detail, deaths – how did Pil joo’s mom die?
I don’t think that detail has been revealed. It is has, hopefully someone will share the details.

I concur Mushyworm is a den of greedy, grasping vipers 🐍. Baby Boo is quickly taking after Scabs which

It has been reiterated throughout the series that Cheong Ah does NOT recognize illegitimate children. While Pil Joo’s dad likely supported his illegitimate children and the baby mama while he lived, I just don’t see the ol’Git 👴 paying to support illegitimate heirs. Scabs’✋ solution is to eliminate ANY potential competition for Baby Boo’s inheritance. In the case of Pil Joo/Eun Cheon it was during his dad’s funeral Scabs sent Eun Cheon’s family on the ⛵ with the pretense of meeting the ol’Git 👴.

Pil Joo’s parents’ deaths are ambiguous. In earlier episodes there were rumors of the ol’Git 👴 removing dad’s oxygen mask. I would not put it past Scabs, the ol’Git’s 👴 or his other son using foul play to eliminate Eun Cheon’s dad, which I suspect put him in the hospital 🏥 in the first place. Eun Cheon’s mom died after he had already assumed Pil Joo’s identity. I would imagine Pil Joo’s mom likely died from stress of being on the run 🏃 in fear for her surviving son’s life and/or grief at the loss of her younger son. I hope this ambiguity will be cleared up. Those Cheong Ah “murdering pigs”‼

I don’t think 💰 is Pil Joo’s motive. I gather he has accumulated quite a bit. I think Pil Joo wants to ground the Jangs into the ground. I suspect Pil Joo would be willing to spend his ENTIRE fortune to accomplish his goal. I think he wants to run Cheong Ah as that would be the best retaliation against the Jangs.

I think the knife is symbolic but also literally a reminder of JMR’s deal with KPJ. She used it before to remind him of it when he was apparently to give up on their plains due to his love for NMH. Maybe if makes her feel like she owns him and he is allowing her to feel that while it is convenient for him.

That makes sense, DF. I remembered Scabs flaunting the knife and talking to Pil joo, but I’d forgotten the reason.

I agree with this symbolism of the knife 🗡. I found Baby Boo’s statement about returning the knife 🗡, lest BB would be blamed for it being missing to be chilling. Is BB planning on framing Pil Joo using the knife 🗡⁉. It makes me nervous that Baby Boo has become an “by any means necessary” guy, a chip off the Scabby ✋ block. I concur this is not a pretty sight. AT LEAST Baby Boo has not confided the truth about Pil Joo’s identity to Scabs … yet.

Between Baby Boo telling driver Oh to not wait for him and confiding Pil Joo’s identity to him, was it just me or did any of you think that Baby Boo has an inkling that driver Oh is his dad⁉.

While I can understand Mo Hyun’s desire to go back to the time before she knew the “ugly truth” I am perplexed at her logic of blaming herself.

I did feel that JBC might suspect secretary Oh was his dad. NMH is probably blaming herself for being naive. It’s not really fair but it’s a natural reaction I think when one has been fooled, lied to or cheated on, etc.

    • Agree the knife is a symbol of Pil Joo debt and her ownership.
