Suspicious Partners “Back to Everyday Life” Episode 39-40 (Final) Recap
Eun Bong Hee (Nam Ji Hyun) enters the empty courtroom. She remembers the first time she saw No Ji Wook (Ji Chang Wook) in his prosecutor robes. She remembers the trial where she was blamed for a murder Hyun Soo committed. She remembers Ji Wook declaring the mistrial because of the false evidence District Attorney Jang planted. Bong Hee remembers falling in love with him. Ji Wook enters the courtroom. Bong Hee runs to him and throws her arms around him.
Bong Hee wakes. Na Ji Hae (Kim Ye Won) grouses that she’s been on the couch all weekend and recommends a shower. Bong Hee doesn’t understand why she pulled away from Ji Wook yet again. She recalls kissing him in the courtroom then rushing away with a lame excuse that she was late to a trial. She declares herself a coward.
Ji Wook shows up unexpected. Ji Hae is thrilled to have him urge Bong Hee off the couch. Bong Hee doesn’t want to go out until she’s washed up. Ji Wook declares she is beautiful even if she’s unclean.
Ji Wook leads Bong Hee to the park. He’s not happy that she hasn’t returned his phone calls. She claims the battery on her phone was low. Ji Wook wonders if she was avoiding his calls on purpose. She admits she afraid to restart the relationship in case they crash and burn again. Ji Wook doesn’t care. They need to date. Bong Hee can’t believe that he’s willing to date given their track history. Ji Wook reminds her that she boldly kissed him and restarted the relationship. She can’t renege. Bong Hee asks if Ji Wook is worried about future issues. Ji Wook declares not having her in his life scares him more. He asks if she’s dating him or no. She declares they are dating. Ji Wook smiles. Bong Hee smiles.
Thank goodness, he didn’t rub her dirty hair, that move was not a favorite of mine during this series.
Bong Hee is nervous and excited (clean too) as she gets ready for a date with Ji Wook. She tells Ji Hae that Ji Wook convinced her not dating was the scarier option. She asks Ji Hae if she looks pretty. Ji Hae say no. Bong Hee retorts that Ji Hae is blind. Ha! Ji Hae bumps up Bong Hee’s blush declaring it’s all the rage. Ji Wook notices the blinding blush but tells Bong Hee it is pretty. They decide to “day drink”.
In court, District Attorney Jang admits he did illegal activities in the past, but he didn’t try and kill Hyun Soo. Cha Yoo Jung (Nara), the prosecutor, listens to District Attorney Jang make his statement. Bong Hee and Ji Wook listen from the gallery. District Attorney Jang claims he had the knife but never intended to kill Hyun Soo. Bong Hee asks Ji Wook what the court could decide. Ji Wook explains District Attorney Jang could be charged with attempted murder, and if not, put on probation.
After court Ji Wook tells District Attorney Jang that he should be ashamed of his actions.
Back at the office, Lawyer Ji Eun Hyuk (Choi Tae Joon), Bong Hee, and Lawyer Byeon Young Hee (Lee Deok Hwa) watch the news report that District Attorney Jang resigned. Lawyer Byeon doesn’t like a peer going through this even if he doesn’t like District Attorney Jang. Lawyer Ji grouses with the 3 of them in the office, he’ll have to step up his game to bring in business. Bong Hee and Lawyer Byeon pledge to work hard.
At Hyun Soo’s trial, Ji Wook details Hyun Soo’s murders and lack of remorse for them. Ji Wook recommends he be sentenced to life in prison. Assistant Jang, Lawyer Ji, Bong Hee, and Yoo Jung watch from the gallery. The judge agrees with the sentence and orders Hyun Soo to life in prison. Bong Hee can’t believe it, she’s finally free of the false claim.
Outside the courtroom, Ji Wook briefly takes her hand as he walks past and whispers congratulations with a big smile on his face. Bong Hee smiles and thanks him.
Bong Hee rushes into her mother’s arms, both thrilled her reputation is finally cleared. Bong Hee tells her mother she wishes her father’s name could be cleared too. She recalls Ji Wook saying there was no legal recourse to clear her father’s name because he was never charged of his parent’s murder though he slandered by District Attorney Jang and the statute of limitations has expired… Recall Bong Hee’s father died trying to save Ji Wook’s parents after he pulled Ji Wook from the burning home. Bong Hee’s mother tells her clearing Bong Hee’s name is sufficient for her. She invites Bong Hee for dinner but she’s already for plans with Ji Wook.
Ji Wook tries to leave work but Assistant Jang points to the fresh pile of work. Ji Wook decides to rush through some work and texts Bong Hee that he’ll be late.
Bong Hee waits on the park bench and researches ideas for their date. Ji Wook texts again that he’s still working. Bong Hee assures him she’ll wait.
Ji Wook can’t believe how long things are taking. He orders the man to confess (even putting him on a timer to confess).
Bong Hee spot Yoo Jung and Ji Hae walking through the park. She invites herself to go drinking with her. Yoo Jung warns Bong Hee that Ji Wook is a workaholic. Yoo Jung then asks if Ji Hae is interested in Lawyer Ji. Ji Hae defends her choice claiming she didn’t know he was interested in another woman. Clueless of Lawyer Ji’s interest in her (or rather in denial) Yoo Jung demands to know who Lawyer Ji likes. Ji Hae and Bong Hee stare at each other in amazement.
Lawyer Ji and Ji Wook run into each other outside the bar where the ladies are drinking. Ji Wook says he’s there to pick up Bong Hee. Lawyer Ji says he’s there to pick up Ji Hae and Yoo Jung. Ji Wook isn’t impressed that Lawyer Ji is juggling two women at once.
Inside the bar, they find Yoo Jung, Ji Hae, and Ji Wook drunk. Ji Hae accuses Lawyer Ji of using her. Yoo Jung accuses Lawyer Ji of liking another woman. As Ji Wook helps Bong Hee up, he tells Lawyer Ji to get his act together.
Ji Wook piggybacks Bong Hee. Yes, they are darling.
Lawyer Ji helps Yoo Jung into her apartment. Yoo Jung stumbles and Lawyer Ji rights her. They stare into each other’s eyes. He steps away. She grabs his hand. He stares into her eyes. She apologizes. He kisses her. Now he apologizes. She pulls him close. They kiss.
In the morning, Bong Hee wakes in Bong Hee’s bed. She wonders what happened last night. Ji Wook asks Bong Hee if they slept together. Ji Wook demurs he wasn’t a gentleman. As Ji Wook leaves to get her water, Bong Hee giggles that she remembers everything that happened last night.
That was a full circle moment folks.
Ji Wook and Bong Hee enjoy each other. They establish the routine of kissing when she arrives for work and he leaves for work. Ji Wook wants her to move in with him, but Bong Hee demurs that it would lessen the excitement. They spend time together. We hear Ji Wook intone that Bong Hee feels like a part of him and he loves every day that he spends with her.
Lawyer Ji tells Yoo Jung it is time they discuss their relationship. Nervous, Yoo Jung blurts out that she was drunk the other night and it didn’t mean anything. Lawyer Ji elects to reveal his feelings and admits that he’s liked Yoo Jung for a long time. Yoo Jung admits that she’s unsure of her feelings for him. This doesn’t disturb Lawyer Ji. He’s willing to wait a bit longer for Yoo Jung.
Bong Hee has a client that admits to using a baseball ball to get her husband’s attention (he wouldn’t look away from his phone).
Ji Wook tells the woman and Bong Hee that because she used a baseball bat (a defined weapon) it qualifies as assault and battery. The woman says her husband cheated on her and she lost it. Bong Hee notes that the husband is willing to go to settlement if Ji Wook will suspend the charges. When the woman admits the affair was in 1987, Bong Hee can’t believe it took the woman 30 years to strike out at her husband.
Walking in the park, Bong Hee explains to Ji Wook that the woman couldn’t take revenge 30 years ago because of their children. Ji Wook counters that this is assault and the woman should have handled it 30 years ago. Bong Hee explains that the woman situation again. She demands to know why Ji Wook can’t feel compassion for this woman. Ji Wook urges Bong Hee to not this work disagreement lead into their personal lives. Too late, Ji Wook. Bong Hee brings up the time Ji Wook avoided her kiss. She notes that she was mad, but didn’t assault him for it. She warns that she can’t control what she’ll do in the next 30 years. Ha!
Lawyer Byeon, Ji Wook, Lawyer Ji, and Assistant Jang walk and notice Ji Wook’s confusion on what he did wrong. Assistant Jang murmurs that women are too confusing. Lawyer Byeon declares he’s the expert among them. Lawyer Byeon declares the only thing to do is admit “I was wrong”. He laughs that line smooths trouble waters every time.
Then we see that line doesn’t work when uses it on his wife who is irked that he doesn’t understand what he did wrong. Ha!
Bong Hee tells Ji Hae and Yoo Jung that she and Ji Wook are fighting over nothing. Ji Hae spouts the truth, that living every day is the hard part of life. Ji Hae explains when a couple of under siege they cling to each other. But normal challenges can fracture a relationship. Ji Hae notes internal issues in a relationship are revealed in daily dating.
For once, I agree with Ji Hae. Mark that down.
When Bong Hee arrives for work and Ji Wook is ready to leave for work, they eye each other. They give each other a peck kiss. Ji Wook tries the line Lawyer Byeon recommended; “I was wrong”. Naturally, Bong Hee asks what he was wrong about. Flummoxed that the line didn’t make everything better, Ji Wook murmurs everything and quickly leaves. Bong Hee strides away knowing daily issues.
When Bong Hee brings suitcases full of outfits for a photo shoot. Ji Wook tries to say something positive about each outfit but Bong Hee complains he needs to be honest. When he is honest, Bong Hee grouses that he’s dissing her favorite outfit. Ji Wook tells himself he can’t win for trying.
That was darling and completely realistic! Perfect example of why men find women confusing and women don’t understand why men aren’t sensitive to their needs.
One year later…
The work pile grows on Ji Wook’s desk. Assistant Jang tells Ji Wook he’s a victim of his own success. Ji Wook can’t take it and must cancel dinner with Bong Hee.
Bong Hee reads the text and grouses that work comes before her. She intones that fighting over silly things is part of being a couple.
At work, Ji Wook complains that Bong Hee has not texted him for 3 days. When she arrives at the office to eat black bean noodles, Bong Hee orders carryout ASAP. Ji Wook intones that ignoring silly things is part of being a couple.
Yoo Jung grouses to Lawyer Ji that he didn’t call her after a company dinner. Lawyer Ji admits he was drunk, it was late, and he didn’t call. He promises not to do it again. They smile. Ji Hae rolls her eyes.
At home, Ji Hae if Bong Hee still feels flutters when she sees Ji Wook. Bong Hee confirms this. Bong Hee grouses that everyone else is in love but her.
Bong Hee and Ji Wook face each other in the courtroom. She’s defending a man that likes to strip in public. Though Bong Hee tells the judge the treatment has worked, then man starts stripping.
Outside the courtroom, Bong Hee can’t believe her client couldn’t control himself. Ji Wook declares the guy is a pervert. Bong Hee counters that she can’t turn down a client referral from his father. Bong Hee grips about his competitiveness. Ji Wook counters that she’s just as competitive. She wants to break up. Ji Wook declares she doesn’t this every time. Bong Hee counters that he’s exaggerating. They smile. They both intone that they want their everyday life to continue, as long as they are together.
At the daily meeting, Lawyer Ji notes the Ji Wook wanted to hire someone that was good looking. Yoo Jung has no issues with that but Ji Wook isn’t happy. Lawyer Byeon demands to know why people that don’t work at the firm have say. Ji Wook counters he owns the house. Lawyer Ji, sitting in Ji Wook’s old spot and sporting similar glasses, calls them back to order. As Lawyer Byeon gets lost in an old memory, Ji Wook and Bong Hee as well as Lawyer Ji and Yoo Jung signal that it is time to go.
As Ji Wook and Bong Hee stroll in the park, they hold hands, happy to be together. Ji Wook says “I love you”. Bong Hee says “I love you too”. Ji Wook puts on ring on Bong Hee’s finer. He declares he’ll love her forever. Bong Hee asks if this is a proposal. Ji Wook confirms it. Bong Hee asks for a song. She smiles and lightly kisses him. She agrees to marry him. Ji Wook sigh in relief. Bong Hee promises to love him forever. Big smiles all around. As they walk, Ji Wook sings Bong Hee a song (“101 Reasons Why I Like You” the 10th song of the OST). They both intone “I’m thankful that I met you.”
My Thoughts
The final episode was a pleasant victory lap for this series. The series could have ended with the previous episode as minimal plot remained. Hyun Soo was sentenced to life. Bong Hee’s name was cleared. Then the series turned to address the question of dealing with daily life and the challenges it can bring to a relationship. I liked that aspect. It’s realistic.
Lawyer Ji Eun Hyuk (Choi Tae Joon) admitted his feelings to Yoo Jung. She wasn’t sure of what her feelings and told him. But by the end of the series they were a couple.
Eun Bong Hee (Nam Ji Hyun) was finally exonerated. I liked that she celebrated this milestone with her mother. It made sense that she was bummed that she could not offer the same to her falsely accused father. Her mother wisely realized that clearing the name of her daughter, not her dead husband, was the priority. Nam Ji Hyun had good chemistry with Ji Chang Wook and I enjoyed her portrayal of the perky Bong Hee.
No Ji Wook (Ji Chang Wook) made his relationship with Ji Wook permanent. Bully for him. He found the right woman for him. Why not declare his love and desire to marry? When Ji Wook returned to the prosecutor’s office, workload pressures returned. They bickered. But they didn’t let the bumps in the road turn into sink holes. I enjoyed Ji Chang Wook’s portrayal of Ji Wook, though this character’s flaws irked me many times in this series. As Ji Chang Wook wraps up his time before enlisting in the military on August 14, (JCW Kitchen Blog Post) this will be the last series he’ll grace for two years. This actor is a personal favorite of mine. He can infuse a scene with passion, intensity, and humor. He seems comfortable in his own skin and it translates to the characters he brings to life. Ji Chang Wook delivers yummy kisses that have a passionate edge which I adore. I’ll miss this actor for the next 2 years. I wish him well and a speedy return.
Was my wish list for the final episode granted?
* Close the book on the murderer Hyun Soo and find him guilty and sentenced to jail – Granted. Life in prison was the appropriate sentence. Bong Hee’s name was cleared.
* Lawyer Ji and Yoo Jung remove the self-imposed restraints and admit their feelings for each other – Granted. Lawyer Ji admitted his feelings first and Yoo Jung capitulated later. I liked Lawyer Ji and his stalwart support for Ji Wook (even when Ji Wook open loathed him) and Bong Hee. I’m ambivalent about Yoo Jung.
* Warm, passion, and humor for our couple – Granted. Real life invoked a different set of pressures than catching a serial murderer but our couple committed themselves to getting through it by a combination of openly expressing when they were irked, and supporting each other with humor and love.
* Bonus – Ji Wook’s family and Bong Hee’s mother come to together and accept and bless their relationship – Not Granted. We did see Bong Hee and her mother happy that she was cleared. We did see Ji Wook’s mother and Lawyer Byeon in a scene. But we didn’t see the parents come together.

One burning question: if the fire that killed Ji Wook’s parents was not arson, as Investigator Jang’s investigation revealed, then why frame Bong hee’s dad?
WHY DO I DO THIS TO MYSELF? And why is it okay for Kdrama writers to introduce stuff and not explain it? I’ve come to accept it with supporting characters because I’ve rationalized it that sometimes explaining their ongoing plot would take the remaining time necessary to wrap up the main characters’ storyline. But this was the whole crux of Ji Wook and Bong hee’s life-long traumas that motivated them in their choice of careers and was a chasm they had to overcome to be together and the cause of they’re lives intersecting with Prosecutor Python.
Yes. I did enjoy the bulk of the series but I was waiting on that one thing to be revealed the entire time. *sigh*

I can see Bong hee’s dad being at the house because he did have some type of legal issue going on with Bong hee’s dad (not serious but I can’t recall exactly what) so he may have been there to discuss/ negotiate the case. Help me out you guys – what was the issue with the dad’s?
I do remember that Prosecutor Python used the issue to prove motive for Bong hee’s dad setting the fire.
I did love our leads but, and I can’t explain it, the new half episodes did something to my rhythm. I won’t say the show’s rhythm had a problem, just my own quirkiness of how I process things now.

I take umbrage when writers do not logically conclude major plot points, including Beez’s burning 🔥 question regarding the DA’s 🐍 purpose of charging Bong Hee’s dad with arson 🔥, if the fire 🔥 was an accident. I also get annoyed 😟 with things that are introduced that are dropped, not explained, and/or resolved. Case in point what was 🍭-ed Chan Ho’s motivation in aiding and abetting Hyun Soo, when it had to be obvious the victims we’re his fellow gang rapists❓. Wouldn’t someone whose occupation is crime scene investigation be able to deduce he was also a target 🎯⁉

@JT – yup. *nodding* If they had not tried to be clever in misleading us with SweetFace (since he was part of the rape crew, I’ll have to change his name to SuckerFace), I would assume SuckerFace was afraid of Hyun soo (which we were later shown he was) so he cooperated out of fear of geting killed and/or arrested. But they showed him enjoying the cat & mouse game he perpetrated on our Bong hee. 😦
I don’t mind writers being clever, but only if when you rewatch it, IT REALLY IS CLEVER and still makes sense but fooled us through out own assumption but in rewatchinh it you go “Ohhhhh… that’s why…” — not written so you plainly show us something like SuckerFace enjoying the game and,from what I can tell, willingly participating in the early episodes. If SuckerFace were acting out of fear, I doubt he would’ve been smirking as he risked his job and capture doing Hyun soo’s bidding. UNLESS… he enjoyed the frightening of Bong hee because it’s the only outlet he had for his perversion rapist tendencies these days.
I don’t know. Maybe it WAS clever if that’s the case, but instead of showing us at some point that psychological twosted evil going on in his head, instead we were shown SuckerFace as a sympathetic victim.
Maybe somebody else has more insight?

I don’t have more insight other than Writer Kwon dropped the ball ⚽ on this and other plot points in this series. I wonder how much “writing on the fly” occurred in the second half of the series.

ooo! oo! Now that it’s inevitable, I can’t wait to see JCW with a military buzz cut! (He’s got a fairly (overly) large head that I noticed in Smile Donghae when his character had an auto accident and the hospital completely wrapped his head in bandages (almost like a mummy) leaving only his face and ears out. lol
I notice most of the Kstars cut their own hair before they go so maybe they know the military barber gives a bad haircut or something. lol
Despite his overly large head, I think JCW will look sexy with a brush cut.

Its me again.
To be perfectly honest with you this drama was such a disappointment to me. Especially coming from someone who had watched the earlier work of the same writer and enjoyed it called “I remember you”. If you haven’t watched the drama yet, then I recommend you to try it out. Anyways back to the drama I’ve felt that the second half was weaker than the first one.
Here are some things that left me feeling empty and irritated.
1. The fact that the district Attorney only loses his job place. Really? “It’s fine to do corrupted things as long as you’re in a higher rank in the society” that what it feels the drama is telling. I mean he put an innocent man in prison (Bong-Hees dad) and probably had done even more cruel unknown things. Yet, he gets to walk free ! No worries! Sure maybe in the near future he will be in jail. But I’m doubtful that’s ever going to happen.
2. “Your dad killed my dad” plotline – Just why? Why was that needed? Obviously to add more angst and drama. But really it ruined my enjoyment of our main couple. To the point that by the end of the drama I was just so bored with them. Also I´ve noticed that our main protagonists had miscommunication even when they were in a relationship, and that’s just bothersome and tiresome.
3. Eun-hyuk & Yoo Jung being together in the end felt lazy and extremely uncomfortable. Sure nothing happened during their one night. Which is a stupid plot twist if ask me. If both of them were really sorry for breaking Ji-wooks trust and friendship. They would have at least try to explain themselves. Or Eun-hyuk could have attempted to move from Yoo Jung. By the end it makes Eun-hyuk and Yoo Jung as two pathetic people who cared very little about Ji-wook feelings. Both of them clearly deserve each other.
Oh and one question that keeps nagging me is this one :
1. Why Hyun-soo didn’t mark Chan-ho with an “X” on the photo. Any guesses? Now that it been confirmed that Chan-ho is dead, that café scene from episode 21 makes little to no sense for me. Speaking of photos what happened to the ones Hyun-soo had?
By the end of the drama, I just said finally its over. Which is a shame because at beginning of the drama I was really immersed into the story and thought this was going to become one of my favourites of 2017. Oh well.

Valid point. Many kdramas give the same message. Lookout comes to mind because that series just ended. The powerful get away with corruption and murder. But like you, I look to the series to right that wrong, and get justice. District Attorney Jang was not brought to justice.

My take was Eun Hyuk loved Yoo Jung forever and finally got her in the end. Yoo Jung on the other hand, didn’t do anything for me. Perhaps Eun Hyuk got the short end of the stick with her. But you can’t control who you love.

Misdirection by the Writer Kwon is the only thing that came to mind.
Certainly this drama had blemishes. With Ji Chang Wook heading off to the military, I was aware that I wouldn’t see him for 2 years, so I was happy to see him week to week.

DA Jang (AKA Python 🐍) was full of it (💩) — he took a knife 🗡, Hyun Soo’s weapon of choice, to protect himself against Hyu Soo⁉ How ridiculous 말도안돼‼ Wouldn’t the DA 🐍 be able to protect himself better with a jailhouse 🚔 visit? When a court official gets convicted of corruption, I think all the cases they have ever been involved in are up for review to potentially be overturned. It is unfortunate Bong Hee’s dad cannot have his name cleared. What a relief. 😌 for Bong Hee to be formally declared 🗣 innocent! How generous of Bong Hee’s mom is satisfied 😃 with Bong Hee being exonerated snd willing to let bygones be bygones when it came to her husband’s reputation.
Lawyer Byeon seems to have it right about clearing the air with your significant other: bow 😔 down, take responsibility and say you are sorry. Clearly this didn’t always work, but it is a good start. I ❤-ed how our OTP 👩❤👨 and the other couple were shown with a touch of reality, communication misunderstandings, working through issues, large and small and striving to stay together. I thought it was fun that Bong Hee Ji Hye and Yoo Jung hanging out together. I snorted 😵 my ice water through my nose when Ji Hye mentioned how she like Eun Hyuk better now that he no longer used the weird laugh!
While we did not see Ji Wook and Bong Hee’s parents come together to bless their union, in my mind it was implied that they did – that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
