Suspicious Partner Episode 34 Recap

Suspicious Partner Episode 34 “Reconnaissance” (Part 2) Recap

No Ji Wook (Ji Chang Wook) walks Eun Bong Hee (Nam Ji Hyun) to the apartment building. She thanks him for the ride and the escort. Na Ji Hae (Kim Ye Won) appears and questioned why they hang out if they’ve broken up. Things get more awkward when Cha Yoo Jung (Nara) walks up with Lawyer Ji Eun Hyuk (Choi Tae Joon). Yoo Jung wants to know why the three of them are together. Ji Hae wants to know why Yoo Jung and Lawyer Ji are together. Lawyer Ji breaks the impasse when he learns that Bong Hee lives with Ji Hae. He comments living with a friend is difficult. Feigning sweetness Ji Hae demurs that she’s happy to help shocking both Yoo Jung and Ji Wook who both know her true prickly nature. Yoo Jung calls her out for being fake. Yoo Jung asks if Ji Wook and Bong Hee have broken up. Ji Wook beats a hasty retreat and the survival instinct in Lawyer Ji prompt him to leave too.

Cute scene. I loved when Yoo Jung and Ji Wook saw Ji Hae’s interest in Lawyer Ji though he remained clueless.

Lawyer Ji and Ji Wook retreat and drink together. Lawyer Ji is giddy, it’s just like old times. Ji Wook grouses. Lawyer Ji tells Ji Wook not to break up with Bong Hee. Against his better judgement Ji Wook shares that his childhood dreams of the fire have morphed so that he sees the face of the arsonist and it’s Bong Hee’s father. Lawyer Ji is shocked and asks if Bong Hee knowns. Ji Wook says that Bong Hee wants to break up. Ji Wook rouses himself and says talking about this didn’t help. As he stands to leave he tells Lawyer Ji that he doesn’t care about his relationship with Yoo Jung.

I was glad to see Ji Wook share his burdens with Lawyer Ji if he thinks it didn’t help.

Yoo Jung informs Hyun Soo he’s under investigation for murder. He appears to be shocked. Hyun Soo states if he killed someone he should be punished. Now it’s Yoo Jung’s turn to be surprised.

At the morning meeting Ji Wook declares that Hyun Soo must remember and be punished for his crimes. Lawyer Byeon Young Hee (Lee Deok Hwa) complains that Ji Wook should let sleeping dogs lie. But Ji Wook disagrees saying when Hyun Soo is convicted then stain on Bong Hee’s reputation will be removed. Assistant Jang (Jang Hyuk Jin) smiles at Ji Wook’s declaration. Bong Hee offers to help. Ji Wook doesn’t want her hurt. Lawyer Ji offers to protect Ji Wook. Bong Hee tells Ji Wook to be careful when he meets with Hyun Soo.

When Ji Wook meets with Hyun Soo he offers to help Hyun Soo regain his memories. Hyun Soo wants to know he killed, if he killed. Ji Wook can only agree that the reason is a good thing to pursue.

When Ji Wook shows Hyun Soo the men he murdered, he appears not to remember.

Bong Hee presses Lawyer Ji to help her comb through the documents of Hyun Soo’s backstory. He agrees and they search archives. They try and find someone that knows the men. When they enter an eatery own by someone on their list, Bong Hee hears THE SONG. She stares at the owner. There’s a picture of the owner and her daughter. She remembers Hyun Soo whistling the same song.

Ji Wook exits Hyun Soo’s room when Yoo Jung calls Ji Wook to let him know she has a warrant for Hyun Soo.

Hyun Soo flips through his high school yearbook. He recognizes the girl, Park So Young. He stares at her. Memories of her come back to him.  Tears fill his eyes. He sobs his pain. When Ji Wook reenters the room, Hyun Soo has his game face on. Ji Wook takes the memorabilia. He asks if Hyun Soo remembers. He lies. Ji Wook leaves with a sense that something is different.

All the memories flood back to Hyun Soo. All the murders.

One of the police guards on the floor of the bathroom. Hyun Soo disarms him, takes his clothes, and runs.

Yoo Jung and another officer arrive to arrest him. Hyun Soo hides as they pass. Yoo Jung senses his presence and goes after him.  He knocks her down in the stairwell.

Ji Wook gets in his car, he recalls Hyun Soo asking about his family and friends and the girl that he liked. Ji Wook realizes the girl was Hyun Soo’s focus. He looks at the high school year book. He finds picture has been torn out. Bong Hee calls him. She says they’ve found the reason why Hyun Soo killed. Ji Wook asks if it a high school girl was the reason.

Ji Wook realizes that Hyun Soo remembers and rushes back into the hospital. As he dashes up the escalator he senses then sees Hyun Soo going down. Hyun Soo runs. Ji Wook chases him. But Hyun Soo gets away.

How Hyun Soo managed to get a ride in an ambulance with a patient and a paramedic with getting kicked out mystifies.

My Thoughts

Hyun Soo remembers and flees. Hyun Soo’s memories flooded back when he looked at the picture of the girl, Park So Young, he liked in high school. The men he killed must have hurt and killed (assume raped and killed) Park So Young. Hyun Soo’s murder spree has extracted permanent revenge on each of the attackers. Unfortunately, if this is the reason why Hyun Soo has done what he’s done, it isn’t compelling. I don’t know Park So Young. I don’t care about Park So Young. Hyun Soo was established to be lying murdering scum before I learned about Park So Young. his backstory doesn’t evoke anything. Writer Kwon has 6 episodes to turn this around but for now, Hyun Soo is scum and long sought reason WHY he murdered doesn’t resonate.

Lawyer Ji Eun Hyuk (Choi Tae Joon) was the object of affection for Ji Hae, but he didn’t know it. I enjoyed when the women intuited Ji Hae’s interest in Lawyer Ji but he was clueless. I liked seeing Ji Wook and Lawyer Ji sharing a drink. Ji Wook needs to share his burdens.

Eun Bong Hee (Nam Ji Hyun) was marginal in this episode. The focus was Ji Wook and Hyun Soo. But her due diligence with Lawyer Ji yielded, I assume the origin victim’s mother.

No Ji Wook (Ji Chang Wook) realized Hyun Soo remembered but eluded Ji Wook’s pursuit. Ji Wook’s 6th sense told him something was different about Hyun Soo’s reaction. He found the torn page in the high school book and that confirmed Hyun Soo’s memory was back. Bong Hee’s phone call reconfirmed this. Ji Wook’s 6th sense kicked again as he went up the hospital’s escalator. But both men were going opposite directions on the escalator and that gave Hyun Soo enough of a head start to evade Ji Wook. At this point in the series, Ji Wook’s resolution of the man’s face from his dreams, is the more interesting story to me. Don’t get me wrong, I want Hyun Soo captured and Bong Hee’s name cleared, but until Ji Wook can resolve who killed his parents there is a pall over his relationship with Bong Hee.

Ji Chang Wook is the singer on the 10th track of the OST. Check out “101 Reasons Why I Like You”:

  1. Beez says:

I know it’s not right, but I have said repeatedly that if Hyun Soo would stop murdering other people, I’d be perfectly okay with him hunting down and killing rapists. BUT, I’ve had a sneaking suspicion for a while now that HE is the one who killed the girl in the yearbook. Every time they’ve backflashed, we never see them together as a couple. She’s always sitting and he’s looking at her from afar. Then they show him and her walk past each other. I think he had one of those stalker obsessions and imagined relationship and he ended up killing her. And he probably has always been an amnesiac as the symbiosis said because he didn’t remember that HE’S the killer. *sick bastid*

    • I think he had one of those stalker …imagined relationship and he ended up killing her. And he probably has always been an amnesiac as the symbiosis said because he didn’t remember that HE’S the killer.
What an interesting theory! If Hyun Soo killed her then why is he killing all the other guys?

      • Beez says:

Yeah. I supposed him killing the other guys blows a hole in my theory. But I still find it odd that the murder of a girl that, as far as I can see, he had no relationship with, is an extreme reaction.

The backflashes of him looking at her ate not that strange, outs when I combine it with the one scene where they walk past each other that I get the he’s-in-a-onesided-in-his -brain-alone-relationship.

“How Hyun Soo managed to get a ride in an ambulance with a patient and a paramedic with getting kicked out mystifies.”

Honestly! Unless the paramedic is supposed to be knocked out which is doubtful because he is sitting up.

    • Glad it struck you as odd too. 🤦

      • Beez says:

And the ambulance was transporting/transferring a patient no less! It wasn’t even an empty ambulance where you could see, ok, maybe the paramedic was one of those lackadaisical types IF HE HAD BEEN ALONE (i.e., no patient). But as it was…WEIRD and not feasible. That scene actually could’ve worked if the entire back of ambulance had had NOBODY in it.

        • That scene actually could’ve worked if the entire back of ambulance had had NOBODY in it.
So true. You should be a Producer Director or an Editor. You notice all the details.

          • Beez says:

It’s cause I’m curmudgeonly. I think everybody else notices too, but I just complain more. lol

      • Jane Tilly says:

It is possible Hyun Soo claimed to the guardian for the patient 🤕, otherwise it is ridiculous for him to be allowed to ride in the ambulance. 🚑

Beez’s theory is a possibility, as Hyun Soo is a stalker, remember he stalked 🔭 Bong Hee. However, I got the vibe that Hyun Soo killed 🗡 these men out of retribution for whatever they did to the girl he was in love ❤ with (and stalked). Yet again, another example of a vague plot point in a Kdrama; it is one of my pet 🦂 peeves in Kdramaland. It is possible the vagueness is due to traNslation.

Are the associates of Ji Wook’s law 💼 firm in ⚠ danger with Hyun Soo on the loose⁉

        • Beez says:

@JT – Ohhhh yeah. I’d forgotten he stalked Bong hee.

I’m wondering if the other guys that he killed is due to some imagined misplacement of his anger. I guess we’ll find out soon as the show is coming to a close soon.

I wonder if the reason this show didn’t grab me because I expect action from JCW even when I know it’s not that type of character? Or did they not spend enough time on the two main leads? Or not enough time with them together? Or is it the weird split episodes? I can’t figure out what it is I’m missing or what do I want from this show that I didn’t get?

      • Jane Tilly says:

I wondered if the other guys he murdered 🗡 were either trying to protect 🛡 So Young or harm her. Then there were the collateral damage murders, like DA Jung’s son.
