💋Good Kisser or Bad? Sung Hoon
I watched the first episode of My Secret Romance for a couple of reasons; I enjoyed Sung Hoon in Oh My Venus, I was intrigued the OCN was doing a rom-com which is not their typical genre, and I wanted to see if Sung Hoon could kiss better.
What? Sung Hoon is an attractive guy. How could he be a bad kisser?
You know it, I know it too, some guys don’t have stellar kissing skills. One common mistake “too harsh and too fast”. This isn’t preferred, especially for a first kiss.
I watched Oh My Venus and found Sung Jung’s character charming. But when Sung Hoon kissed his love interest in the locker room I cringed. He swooped in and came on too strong. Sung Hoon was guilty of “too harsh and too fast”. Since kisses are heavily choreographed I wondered if the bad kiss was the PD’s direction or Sung Hoon’s style.
So I lay in wait watching My Secret Romance for the first kiss between our leads. Would this kiss be good or bad? I hoped for good. But he swooped in and came on too strong for a first kiss. Sung Hoon was guilty again of “too harsh and too fast”.
First kisses should be sweet, soft, gentle, tender, with eye locks, staring at each other lips, etc. If the first kiss is passionate, build it up to a passionate pitch. It isn’t good when the guy devours the woman’s lips before she’s had a chance to fully engage.
Watch for yourself and judge. Good kisser or bad? Vote in the poll below!
Kiss 1 for your consideration. First kiss of My Secret Romance. Video is cued.
Kiss 2 for your consideration. Locker room kiss of Oh My Venus. Video is cued.
Sung Hoon’s first kiss in “Five Children” was too harsh as well, but it was still enough to cause Yeon Tae to go weak in the knees! However, the kiss right after that was much improved, judging by her reaction. (Episode 33)

Ya know, I guess it’s all about how you like to be kissed.
1) I thought the Oh My Venus kiss was very sexy considering he was kissing someone in frustration who annoyed him (and us, the viewer), and it was sprung on us out of nowhere. Little Ms. Stalker bit him during that kiss and he seemed to like it so that tells you their entire freakish relationship. (I think I only thought it was kind of hot because of the groan he let out from the playful biting. It was still weird though because he hadn’t given her the time of day up until that point. Heck, Ms. Stalker was shocked herself.
2) Noble My Love – Pretty sexy kisses considering it is based on a webtoon/manga so it’s got one of those horrid “I fell on your lips” first kiss, which those never look natural. You can’t fall on someone’s lips. Noses, foreheads, all in the way.
3) I admit I didn’t care for the My Secret Romance kiss first ep because these two people had no feelings for each other.
4) Five Children – Was an AMAZING kiss. The actress was asked on variety program who is the better kisser of all the actors she’s kissed and she picked Sung Hoon.
Sung Hoon had earned the nick name “Sung Swoon”. We were calling him that long before Five Children, but then he went and proved he deserved it:

I meant to add, for The Five Children kiss, you’d have to understand the dynamic of the female character. She was shy to the point of unable to express herself. When she grabbed his wrist in the kiss scene, he understood what that took and what that meant and exactly how he needed to approach her. Had he moved in for a slow, beautiful kiss, her personality instinctively would’ve pushed him away. She couldn’t help it so he grabbed her decisively. Her character liked a guy for 7 years but could never respond when that guy would timidly test the waters to see if she liked him too. Sung Hoon’s character knew all the details of that so he approached her perfectly. He actually had to bully her into liking him which, I wouldn’t normally recommend, but her character needed that to come out of her shell. It was perfect,IMO.
I’m glad kjtamuser brought up this new show though because I just want to scream at the regression this is for Sung Hoon. I’ve always thought his acting was pretty good for someone who decided to become an actor late in life. So I’ve been watching him get better and better. But My Secret Romance looks like they have a budget that I could’ve afforded to produce this show. Sung Hoon’s acting is the worse I’ve ever seen him. As if there’s no money to waste doing a re-take of scenes that he hasn’t pulled off well.
Noble, My Love looked like it had more professionalism behind it and it was a web series.
And as much as I can look at one of my biases in almost anything, even with lonnnng series (I watched Ji Chang Wook in 156 eps of an old drama), this My Secret Romamce would be better off as 15 minute long episodes. I find it hard to watch and I’m very disappointed because I’ve been waiting for Sung Hoon to get a lead in a quality show of his own.

You raise an excellent point. Without context, a kiss video is meaningless. I should have set the stage a bit more. Your explanation for that kiss made it understandable and kinda sweet. Thx!

Well said, well said. I too hoped My Secret Romance would be a vehicle to showcase his talents in a lead actor role. I’ve been waiting for a similar opportunity for Ji Soo. Granted I’ve only watched the first episode, but My Secret Romance seemed to try too hard and gave a “clunky cute” vibe that I did not love. I put that on the PD for production choices that draped that awkward mantel on the show.

Cute term “Sung Swoon”. I”m late to the party in this.

She was a stalker-like character and she was surprised! I went back and checked my recap. I made no comment on the swoop factor, so it nagged me a bit, and made me curious about future moments for this actor.
Thank you for the link to the good quality video. Just saw Shin Hye Sun in Legend of the Blue Sea. To be clear, Sung Hoon is not awful just a bit more “in your face” than I like on initial contact. All a matter of opinion.

I thought the locker room kiss from Oh My Venus – which I must admit I haven’t watched – liked pretty cute and smooth. In My Secret Romance, he does look a little “hungry.” I mean, she’s right there and looking very interested – just cozy on up to her and say a nice thing or two and she’s gone. No need to neck grab. Sometimes, I think I would make a not-so-nice man!
I always recommend the skinship in New Tales of the Gisaeng.

@humbledaisy – I am rollin’ laughing.
I’m not against a little roughness cause Lord knows I like a decisive man – but only in an established relationship where each person understands what and WHEN you want that.
I will give Sung hoon’s character credit for that pause-and-wait for her permission (she nodded) just before the clothes started coming off. 😉

Yep, it needs to be mutual.

I’ve not heard of this drama before. I did a quick google and see it’s a long one – 52 episodes! Reviews were more favorable than not. Thanks for sharing!

@kjtamuser, besides wanting to watch Sung Hoon, I watched New Tales because I’ve been so curious about the role of gisaengs. Sometimes I see them talked about as if they were high class prostitutes but then at other times, it’s talked about as if sex is not what was going on at all but rather “intellectual companionship”. I doubt that very much but I’m still uncertain.

Sung Hoon redeemed himself in Ep. 3.
The episode gave a head nod to Noble, My Love by having the book brought to the female lead and played a bit of the original theme music. But I also think Sung Hoon’s look, from the style and color of his hair to his purple suit is lifted straight from Noble (not complaining ’cause he looks darrrrrn good).
So while I found Ep3 to be much better, I’m at a loss with the epilogues which don’t seem to add much to the story. With the exception of the one epilogue that revealed she kept his coat – the rest have me puzzled as to why they’re there.

For Sung hoon fans, here is the link to his live interview that Dramafever cond6icted the other day.
(It doesn’t look like a video but click a couple of times on his picture)
Be forewarned, the host is inexperienced and it comes off as a hot mess. I can forgive her for being nervous, but most of the time she forgets to translate! You can even see that Sung Hoon understands better than he speaks English and from his facial expressions, he realizes what’s going on. He even starts answering (in Korean) the English question before she translates it to him.
@kjtamuser – I got a notification that you’d made a comment here, but it was blank and I don’t see another comment by you here.

Not sure about the blank comment. I wonder if it could be related to the double comment posted on 4/21.
