Architecture 101 Review

Architecture_101-FReview. Architecture 101 provides a past and present look at the relationship of two people that meet after a fifteen year gap.
Synopsis. What if your first love from college reappeared in your life after a 15 year absence? Would you reconnect and restart your romance?
More Details. Architecture 101 is a 2012 Korean film that stars Uhm Tae Woong as architect Seung Min and Han Ga In as Seo Yeon. She walks into the architecture firm he works at and asks him to build her a house. At first, he doesn’t recognize her but then he realizes she is his first love from college. He is reluctant to build the house, but she insists, and he relents. Will they reconnect? Will they rekindle their romance? What happened in their past?

What I liked about Architecture 101:

Subtle Story.
This was a quiet, thoughtful film whose story unfolded in layers from start to finish. The writers (Lee Yong Ju, Kim Ji Hye, Min So Yeon) crafted a story that requested your interest but didn’t demand it. The story is told in 2 time frames – the present, where our leads reestablish a connection, and the past, where our leads are freshmen in college and forge a friendship and love interest. The writers wove the flashbacks and the present day so there was balance and connection between them. No flashback was jarring, instead facilitating the movie’s flow.

Realistic hesitation of the present day characters to connect.
The present day Seung Min and Seo Yeon were initially stiff with each other but became more comfortable as the film progressed.

a. Uhm Tae Woong as architect Seung Min. He was a successful architect not sure he wanted to reengage with his past and potentially throw his current path off course. Initially he guarded himself around her not wanting to feel those old feelings again. Tae Woong made me believe that having a first love reappear in your present day life may not be nirvana.

b. Han Ga In as Seo Yeon. She pulled him into reconnecting, not taking no for an answer. Yet she did not push him to reengage romantically instead letting their relationship evolve from their contact during the house building phase.

Gentle, shy friendship for the past characters. The college age Seung Min and Seo Yeon slowly built a friendship but hesitated to share their true feelings.

a. Lee Je Hoon as young Seung Min. He was so shy about sharing his feelings with young Seo Yeon it was almost painful to watch his unease and hesitation.

b. Bae Suzy as young Seo Yeon. She had to wait for him to make major moves in their relationship while doing what she could to push it along subtly. They lived in the time where the man was expected to make the romantic moves and the woman was expected to waited for the man to get the gumption to make a romantic move.

Shout out to Cho Jung Seok as Seung Man’s best friend Nabddeuckyi. He gave good yet ridiculous advice to his shy unsure friend throughout the film. He was a welcome addition to this film.

What I did not like about Architecture 101:

Not Much. This was a well produced, acted, written movie. It was so quiet and gentle that if you were not in the right mood, you might not see it’s beauty. There was limited emotion even though this was a romance movie.

Final Thoughts:

Architecture 101 delivers a subtle story and good acting from our past and present leads. This was a quiet, gentle film.

    Looks interesting, Korean right?

  2. Fair says:

There is a controversy that the main actor Seung Min had not rescued Seo Yeon from being “taking advantage” by Jae Wook during their freshman year in the University. Let us examined the issue.

    1) First of all Seo Yeon has admitted that she has a CRUSH over Jae Wook and that is the reason why she took architect
101 class despite her major is music. She wants to be close to Jae Wook. Additionally she likes Jae Wook as he is
intelligent, smart and wealthy. Jae Wook has a car and apartment. In one incident Seo Yeon joined Jae Wook
humiliating Seung MIn who is lying behind in the back seat of the car as he is wearing a cheap fake GUESS T Shirt
totalling discarding the feeling of Seung Min. At the same time she flirted with Jae Wook in the car and wanted to
    visit him at his apartment.
    2) Seo Yeon must be responsible for her own action. How can she be soo naive to be in a state of drunkeness that she
almost passed out. Being a woman surely she knows that she would be very vulnerable if she getting herself drunk.
Do not expect a white knight to appear from somewhere to rescue her when she is in danger.
    3) If Seo Yeon is indeed raped by Jae Wook why she did not take any action including reporting to the Police ?
This is not answered in the drama.
    4) Ok both of them Seung Min and Seo Yeon were dating but she has not indicate in any way that she likes Seung Min.
For example after Seung Min decided to “give up” Seo Yeon when he told her not to come to bother him anymore,
she just let the matter slide. Did not even make any attempt to reconcile with him.
My opinion is that Seung Min is doing a right thing when he stopped at the door and did not intervene when hear the noise of Seo Yeon and Jae Wook were ” doing their stuff”.
By the way I also think Seung Min has done the right by dropping Seo Yeon as Seo Yeon is just too materialistic and only aim is to get rich. Many people also hope that this 1st love couple will reconcile after a lapse of 15 years. But my answer is No for the following reasons :-
    1) No change in Seo Yeon personality as she still think of getting rich. Now a very rich divorcee after getting settlement money from her ex husband who is a doctor. Does Seung Min has the financial means to support such a wife ?
    2) Not fair to Seung Min’s beautiful fiancee who has been with him for many years and now they are getting married.
They should be a happy couple. He is very wise to stick with her fiancee .
    3) Lack of sincerity. Why only after so many years ie 15 years that has lapsed did Seo Yeon decide to track down
Seung MIn. Most likely although she is very rich now but she is very lonely. What happened to her relationship
with Jae Wook. Did Jae Wook dumped her after “taking advantage” of her ? Suspect she still has some feeling for
Seung Min but it is simple too late (15 year lapsed).
Let bygone be bygone and hopefully Seo Yoon could move on and have a happy life just like Seung Min.

  3. Ending Part says:

It is simply too late for Seo Yeon to rekindle her 1st love with Seung Min. Too much time has passed. Seung Min has already has a beautiful fiancee who really stick at his side.
If Seo Yeon really loves Seung Min she would not has given up on Seung Min so easily when both of them are in College.
Seo Yeon top priority is to get rich. Seung Min is wise to proceed to marry his beautiful fiancee and settle down in USA.
It is Seo Yeon destiny to lead a lonely life as a divorcee.
