In this first special episode Shi Jin and Mo Yeon’s relationship from episodes 1-6 is the focus.
Descendants of the Sun Episode 17 “See You Again” (Special Episode 1) Recap
We begin with the scene where the Doctor Kang Mo Yeon (Song Hye Kyo) and the medical team watches Yoo Shi Jin (Song Joong Ki) and the special forces walk to them when they first arrive in Urk. Next is the scene when Shi Jin bumps the cell phone out of Mo Yeon’s hand in episode 1. Then the scene where they wait for the CCTV video. Next is the flirting after the stitches scene. Then the rooftop scene with the helicopter exit. Next the scene where he meets her early for their first date outside the hospital and she’s grubby. Then the movie scene. Shi Jin is a flirt and he likes it when she calls him oppa but he gets a call and must leave. Next the coffee shop scene. Mo Yeon states his job is dangerous and saves lives by killing others. Shi Jin shares his job is to fight for freedom and peace for Korea. Mo Yeon declines to continue their relationship and leaves.
Shirtless jogging in Urk. The medical team gets assigned to go to Urk with Mo Yeon as their lead. Back to Urk where Shi Jin gives Mo Yeon her scarf at the airport. He ignores her in Urk. Back to their first date at her apartment. Back in Urk, Shi Jin spins Mo Yeon to the Korean flag while the soldiers salute and tells her he’s glad to see her. Boat ride to the beach. Greece is beautiful. Beach scene where he picks up the rock and gives it to her. Operate on the Arab President standoff scene. There was descent tension in that scene as Shi Jin demands to know if Mo Yeon can save the Arab President. I also liked the wordless communication between Dae Young (Jin Goo) and Shi Jin. Then the Korean soldiers shield the medical team. Shi Jin is disciplined for going rouge to save Mo Yeon. She tries to get his punishment reduced. Angry, he takes her aside to tell her to leave his military business alone. She is upset, apologizes and leaves. The rain, the bottle of wine, and the kiss. She apologizes. They flirt. She offers the wine. He decides to taste the wine by kissing her. She turns her head to avoid the second kiss and she leaves.
Her cliff side confession. He saves her. That was a leap of faith for her that he had to force her into. Officer Yoon Myeong Joo (Kim Ji Won) arrives in Urk interrupting their walkie talkie training. Mo Yeon looked lovely in that scene. Mo Yeon finds out Shi Jin is returning to Korea. He apologizes for not telling her first. He asks if he should apologize for the wine kiss. She wishes they had more time so she could settle her mind between his danger and her attraction for him. She tells him to apologize for the kiss. He does, salutes, and leaves. He’s in Korea and she’s in Urk. She regrets telling him to apologize.
The earthquake. Good special effects. The medical team arrives at the power plant. After shocks. The medical team treats the victims. Mo Yeon commits herself to being the best doctor she can be to all patients under all circumstances. Helicopter with more troops arrive at night. The parachute in (very cool). It’s soldiers with Shi Jin. Mo Yeon and Shi Jin stare at each other. Shi Jin assumes leadership to rescue the power plant victims. Myeong Joo and Dae Young see each other. He’s glad she’s safe. She orders him not to get hurt. He salutes her. She salutes him. Iconic boot tying scene. Shi Jin tells her to stay safe. Mo Yeon tells him to stay safe. They walk away from each other.
* This was the first of three special episodes. Special Episode 1 was a compilation of our lead’s relationship from episodes 1-6. I liked the non linear cuts between the scenes. I enjoyed getting a fresh look at each scene. It showed the strength of our leads relationship and how they took two steps forward, then two steps back. It clearly showed that Mo Yeon’s concern about Shi Jin’s dangerous job and committing to a man that risked his life daily. It clearly showed that Shi Jin was committed to his dangerous job. The ball was in Mo Yeon’s court to accept or reject Shi Jin and his job, they were a package deal. I did expect commentary or extra footage, but no. Will the next special episode focus on Dae Young and Myeong Joo or be a compilation of episodes 7-16?
