Oh My Venus Episode 1 Recap

Back in the day our leading lady, Kang Joo Eun (Shin Min Ah), was considered the Venus (goddess of love) by all the boys and girls. Joon Eun meets swim athlete Im Woo Sik (Jung Gyu Woon). He’s cocky, she’s confident, they are a match. He gives them couple rings and they start dating.

15 years later…

Joo Eun is lawyer and overweight. She works hard. It is the 15 year anniversary of dating Woo Sik. Joo Eun anticipates a wedding ring. Joo Eun’s best friend Lee Hyun Woo (Jo Eun Ji) warns her have some dignity and not be too eager to say yes to this long in coming marriage proposal. Woo Sik drives Joon Eun home. Instead of giving her a wedding ring he returns his couples ring. Oh no, she’s dumped. Does she cry? No. She musters her dignity, tells him he can not break up her that easily and throws the ring, the flowers, and the other gift in his face. She is angry they went through the farce of the dinner.

Meanwhile, our leading man, super hot body personal trainer Kim Young Ho (So Ji Sub), is wanted by all the stars and rumors about relationships dog him. Young Ho’s face is typically in the shadows so the press don’t know who is the trainer to the hottest bodies. He works with a boxer, Jang Joon Sung (Sung Hoon), getting him ready for a big fight. Joon Sung’s manager, Kim Ji Wong (Henry) is the young pup of the three.

Returning from a business trip in American Joo Eun boards the flight for Korea. Young Ho is on the same plane along with his boxer friend, Joon Sung, and his manager, Ji Woong. When Joo Eun is has a medical issue during the flight, Young Ho offers his services to care for Joo Eun. He learns she wears a corset, drank wine, caffeine, and put her body in a state of shock during the flight from all the forces. Joo Eun is horrified and when she wakes to find Young Ho next to her in first class and he tells her what happened. Embarrassed, Joo Eun does not gush gratitude. When the plane lands, she realizes she must thank the man that saved her life. Young Ho asks for her help as a thank you. Her help consists of Young Ho traveling in the ambulance with her to the hospital and there by avoiding customs and the men, especially Manager Min, waiting for him at the arrival gate.

As she dashes down the wet street in the rain a man follows her. Nervous she speeds up. He follows. She falls down and the man reaches her. It is Young Ho! He tells her he doubts she’ll thank him for saving her again.

My Thoughts

* Straightforward first episode laid the ground work for our couple to be. You can see the potential of this couple. Joo Eun will need Young Ho’s help to get her groove and body back. This could be a terrific pairing.
* Joo Eun is overworked and overweight. Shin Min Ah did a good job with this character. She isn’t pitiful and doesn’t have zero confidence like other characters in this scenario I’ve seen. She has the edge she had when she was young, though it has softened with time and circumstances. Shin Min Ah is the major reason I’m watching this show. I loved her in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho aka My Girlfriend Is a Nine-Tailed Fox.
* Young Ho keeps his identity in the shadows. Why? So Ji Sub body is lovingly photographed working out, taking a bath, and other moments. That’s well and good, I don’t mind his eye candy appeal. But more than that, he interests me. He’s protective of his fighting friend. He was willing to help a stranger in distress, Joo Eun, multiple times. First on the plane, then on the ground when he drove her to Woo Sik’s house, then when he offered her a hand when she ran away from him distressed at seeing her man with another woman.
* The supporting characters all worked in this first episode. Looking forward to the next episode.

So glad ktamuser is recapping this!

I liked the first episode (always gotta lay the groundwork).

The only thing I didn’t like was why they felt the need to have a mugger/rapist chase our main heroine. It would’ve been enough that she was running from the sight of her cheating boyfriend. By adding in the rapist/mugger but then having SJS’s character not react by taking her to the police to report it and to have the characters basically ignore that just happened without even talking about it further just felt strange. Or they could’ve revealed the guy wasn’t a rapist/mugger but it was a misunderstanding. Anything except the way they did that. Oh well. I won’t nitpick future stuff, that was just such a big deal to me so to just have it ignored…

After watching episode 4, I realized I had not responded to your comment. I believe episode 4 ties this scene in. Tell me if you agree or not. Young Ho does save her quite a bit.

      • Beez says:

Yes! Definitely agree! But it still irks me to no end that should a serious incidence was downplayed to the extent that immediately afterward 1) John Kim would leave her on the street; 2)that she would be willing to BE left on the street; 3) they didn’t report it to the police; and 4)at the very least discuss what just happened or have her mention it to her best friend. SOMETHING!

At least it wasn’t as random as I thought. I’m betting this might be the college DJ guy, and that our main character rejected him out of loyalty to the friend-turned-she-devil.
